Hi everyone. I own a 2012 Audi A3 1.6 TDI, engine code CAYC. I noticed strong diesel smell coming from an engine compartment a couple of weeks ago. I removed the engine cover and saw that the second fuel injector is wet in comparison all other injectors. I asked a mechanic to check it out. He cleaned an area around injector and I started the engine, first idle, then gave more revs. The mechanic said it leaked from under the big nut that was located on top of the injector, please view the image below (look at the yellow arrow). Can it leak from there? Is there any sill under that nut that can/should be replaced instead of replacing the whole injector? Can it leak from another place, for example from a fuel pipe connection and make it seen as it leaks from the injector itself?

Thanks for advise.

Injector nr 2 leak 1
Injector nr 2 leak 2

There are no seals shown on the parts listing for that joint. An injector specialist may be able to test and repair the injector.
Are you sure the leak is not from the diesel return pipe just to the left of the nut. If it's definitely coming from the injector sealing nut have you tried tightening it a little more ? You can pick up second hand injectors cheap. I would replace the seals on them if you go this way.

Strictly speaking the injectors are coded to the engine as each one has individual calibration data on it. Changing one injector for another used one from a similar engine won't make a lot of difference to this though as the injector output is very similar between them.
Alternatively get a brand new injector and get it coded to the engine.

Thanks @desertstorm . I didn't try tightening the sealing nut. As my research has shown, I (or rather a mechanic) have to take it off or at least remove all the pipes sitting around to get access to the nut. We didn't have time the day I was at the garage.

I'm not totally sure that it doesn't leak from the diesel return pipe as I was inside the car pushing the gas pedal while the mechanic looked under the hood. He said he saw clearly where diesel comes from. However, given how close the return pipe is to the sealing nut, it would be easy to make a mistake. I cleaned it up today and will try to ride a little tomorrow morning, just enough to make diesel leak a few drops again. I hope I spot the right place this time.

I saw reconditioned injectors supplied with a calibration code on ebay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-CADDY...-5WS40539-A2C59513554-03L130277B/253912648909 Perhaps it would be a good solution. But first I have to know for sure that the injector must be replaced.

Hi,
Just curious but did you manage to repair this? Was a new injector required?
I'm having the same problem on a Golf with the identical engine.
Thanks

Hi, I didn't repair anything. It stopped stinking so I didn't bother. The car is for sale anyway.
