So rather guttingly I've kerbed and scuffed 3 out of 4 alloys plus they are all bubbling under the lacquer. I'd like to get them repaired so I approached chipsaway for a quote.

Chipsaway have quoted £50+vat for each alloy but it will be painted not diamond cut.

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to this so I'd like some views - is this a good quote? What am I missing by switching from diamond cut to a painted finish?

Thanks in advance!

Don't have them repaired by Chips Away, they are a cowboy company 9/10. Chips Away will smart repair them out of the back of a van, a wheel refurb specialist will strip them back to bare metal in an acid tank to remove all nasties and start from scratch, for the best finish.

A painted finish won't stand out anywhere near as well. If you have diamond cut wheels, you have the shiny face and a pained finish will only be silver. Expect to pay £80 each for a diamond cut wheel, if you find a very good deal and anything up to £120 a wheel. Reason for the expense is that they are painted and then machined, so they use a sharp tool to shine the face up on the wheel.. basically put.

Whereabouts are you based? I have a good wheel guy in South Wales, who will refurbish them to factory finish.

I really do recommend you avoid a smart repairer, find a wheel specialist in your area and spend the little extra to have the factory, diamond cut finish.

Is that the one in EK @jassyo06 ??
If so they messed up my 5 series Msport alloys 3 times. In the end they bought two new wheels!

I'm in the South West of England.
Are any of these places nearby you

I've used these guys a couple of times for kerbed wheels www.myalloys.co.uk

Not sure how far into the South West you are....

You are very unlikely to get a 24hr turnaround for diamond cut wheels, and not all wheel refurbishers will do them either.

Also, lm pretty sure you can only have diamond cuts refaced once or twice, since the process actually mills the rim down.

Have you thought about alloygaters? https://www.alloygator.com/ :racer:

I've heard they are one of the worst, people say they have a good reputation but I know a lot of people that have had big problems.

My mate has had his powder coated wheels done 3 times, they are still flaking.

I know someone who had a white set of wheels, he had stickers on the face of his wheels before they went in. They removed the stickers and left the glue there, you could see the outline of glue and therefore the writing under the powedercoat!! He had them done a second time, he thought it were strange that the front wheels didn't match the rears in colour.. when questioned they admitted that they ran out of powder coat so painted the other two to get by.. now that's shocking.

He gave up after that, these are people paying £400-£500 for a set of wheels. I get my wheels acid dipped, repaired and painted factory colour in a bodyshop for £40 each.

Indeed, I got a diamond cut alloy repaired a few years ago from Wheel Pro (Edinburgh) and was told they can only do it once or twice. Cost about £95 from memory. After repair it looked slightly shinier than the other 3!

Yeah Bristol is a possibility assuming they do a day service. Can't be without the car for any length of time.

If Bristol is a possibility, I highly recommend Love Your Car, based in Cardiff. Hadfield Road, Cardiff. They turn over in excess of 1500 wheels a month, yes a month and that's ontop of body repairs...

They are £60 a wheel painted and I'm not sure if it's £100/£120 for diamond cut. If you want more details, PM me and I will give you my name and a direct contact to the owner.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm beginning to wonder if a repair is feasible - it seems fraught with danger! Then again I'm not sure I want to try and buy new - seems like a set of 4 are going for approx. £600!

I hear what your saying mate, but hey they would go out of business very fast indeed if they where all like what you say they are, l am pretty confident that they will do my alloy wheel-to a very high standard.....

It is definitely worthwhile, a set of wheels make a car. But, what is your reason for wanting to refurbish them?

As with any wheel refurb, it's a paint mixed by an external company not the factory so there is a slight chance you will end up with colour deviations.

If you really want them done, bargain and get all 4 done to prestine condition.. then just remember you have 4 kerb magnets and drive with caution, render all parallel parking banned ;) The drive thru's are the worst :(

When you say new, if they are new for £600 then they will be replicas now that's a totally different topic, one I can summarise in don't go there haha!! You can indeed pick up genuine, clean sets of wheels for that price with tyres.

Like you have highlighted they are nationwide and have different branches, the one local to me in South Wales might be a bad one.

Picking someone to refurbish wheels is always going to be a nightmare, it has been for us in the past. Hopefully you get good results, I have seen some pretty cool wheels come out of The Wheel Specialist.

I am only getting it repaired from a resale point of view, as it's miniscule and easy to live with mate

But, what is your reason for wanting to refurbish them?

Mine is 2 fold, protecting resale value where possible and it generally bugs me that I've managed to kerb them in the first place and seeing them like this each day is a constant reminder!!

In all honesty your not in a good situation. Its a case of your dammed if you do and dammed if you dont. Most places will re cut the outer edge which leaves a faint line. The other option is a full faced diamond cut which is as good as the person cutting it, cut too much and it will leave your centre cap sitting proud and a bigger/smaller rim depending on the style of the wheel. Cut it too fast and it will have a different diamond cut finish to the rest and also leave the radius of the spokes very sharp, making them probe to chipping and corrosion. Sometimes the outer edge cut is better as your getting less involved and will mean the rest of the your wheel will hold its originality.
My company specialise in powder coating/ re diamond cutting edges of wheels, hydrographics and a bodyshop and if im being tottaly honest, the best company we recommend to the customers we cant help is Pristine wheels in milton keynes. They are dam good at what they do and i would use them if i was in your situation

I'm in the South West of England.

I got my diamond cut wheels repaired via South West Wheel Repairs in Exeter +44 1392 829922 - Bob Moore - he sends them to Pristine Wheels near Milton Keynes and charges £85 plus VAT for removal of tyre and repair. Absolutely perfect repair.

Was reading this thread... and managed to catch a rear wheel in a car park last night. Arrggghh!

In High Wycombe, Bucks. Is Pristine my best bet?

Picture1

I can certainly recommend them - they did a perfect job on my identical wheel and my damage was at least as bad as yours. To save shipping costs I dropped my wheel into my local wheel repairer and he shipped them to Pristine and back FOC - they presumably have a continuous flow of wheels going there and back

I have a set of winter wheels so timed it so that I dropped the wheel in when I was using the winters.

If Bristol is a possibility, then I can highly recommend Platinum Alloys in Swindon if that's feasible for you? (http://platinumalloys.com).

They were originally recommended to me by an Audi specialist and did a cracking job for me acouple of years ago now.

Audi "repaired" the kerbed wheel of our S3 and I've never see such a **** job. The shiny bit was simply smoothed out and is now matte rather than shiny! They didn't charge me for it in the end but even at zero cost it's ****!

Get to a specialist as others have said. The RS3 has a kerbed wheel too but I've just left it as no spare so really painful to get it done as wheel has to be left with them for a few days ...

TX.

How best to protect a (cosmetically) damaged wheel from corrosion etc over the winter/until I get it repaired? Paint the damaged area with nail varnish??

As they'll skim the wheel to repair it I wouldn't have thought that was necessary. But clear nail varnish may be a good thing.

If anybody reading through this in the Midlands area needs their wheels sorted either diamond cut or refinishing / repairing I can highly recomend JP alloys in Cannock. My next door neighbour has had the 4 wheels on his KIA diamond cut after they developed the white worm and I had 2 alloys repaired there.

Sanding the damage area with fine grades of wet/dry sandpaper and applying clearcoat will seal the area until a repair.

This might give you an idea on how to do a quick repair until you can get it done properly...Just mask off the non damaged area of the wheel and rub down the affected area with progressively higher grades of sandpaper starting with maybe 80 grit and working up to finnish with 1200 or higher?
Once you have managed to get rid of the 'kerb rash' then start polishing the edge with 'Brasso' or similar metal polish.Once you are satisfied with the shine give it a good rub with talcum powder (any kind) this is an excellent final finisher for aluminium....After all this area has been cleaned of any dust and dirt.Give it a couple of coats of clear lacquer... Should see you through the winter..:friends:

Seeing a few companies claiming that they can do diamond cut wheel repairs close to me (High Wycombe), which would obviously be more convenient that going further afield. Of course, to terminator x's post, the question is 'are they any good'? So... a long shot... anyone near'ish to High Wycombe used anyone local and recommend them?

I need to get one of mine done too. I might pop down to Auto Medics and ask to have a look at their work. E.g. look at a damaged wheel before and after it has been done BEFORE i let them loose on mine.

Please report back your initial assessment of them

Anyone gone down the route of getting the whole of a damaged diamond cut repaired and completely powder coated (i.e. "converted" to a fully power coated wheel)? Obviously you'd have to get all 4 done so they match, and they'd not be 'standard', even if powder coated in the the standard colour. Would certainly make future inevitable repairs easier and cheaper I'd guess.

If so, get a good result? Got a picture?

I have seen that done, however it doesn't look as good . I personally had some diamond cut alloys on a Passat many years ago and despite having no obvious damage they still suffered from the "white worm". Having salt used on the roads in this country doesn't help at all. I wouldn't have diamond cut wheels on a car now they are just a liability. Having the powder coated would protect them more, and going with something like a shadow chrome they wouldn't look as flat.

Did a quick search on the net and found some piccies of some rotors that have been powder coated.Looks like they may from @DrEskimo unless somebody is using the same forum name on A5OC
