Hi my wife was driving and the car started to judder badly revs would not go over 3000 and was really struggling to pick up any speed. She made it home. I have vcds lite scanned and gave me codes 16686 and 16684 which was cylinder 2 misfire. I changed the plugs and ignition coils as thought that may be the issue the 2nd plug was very black and smells of fuel. I cleared the codes they have not returned but i have not driven the car only started it on the drive but its still shaking badly and misfires when i rev the engine. You can smell fuel coming from the exhaust. I have read a forums relating to cheap ignition coils causing issues, I did buy the budget ones because I thought they would at least tell me if this was the problem. After clearing the codes it did seem slightly better but still not really driveable. Does anyone have any ideas? Is it worth me buy a set of OE ignitions coils?

1.4 16v lump had a problem with oil lift pump starving head of engine, but not aware of any other major issues.
If these engines weren't driven hard enough you could get piston glazing and oil could get past the pistons fouling the plugs. With new plugs in, ensure car is well serviced (new oil/filters), then give it a ragging when warmed up properly (e.g. Run at higher revs). You may find this cleans things up and improves running.
If not check throttle body to see if it's very dirty. If still problems change coil packs around and see if misfires change to different cylinders.

is it ok to drive? i didnt want to do more damage if its someone in the head or bottom end causing the problem

I don't feel qualified to say without seeing it. With those 2 fault codes I assume it's safe as they are plain misfire codes, but as always whilst we can provide insight on the forum to try and point you in a direction the ultimate decision, responsibility and liability sits with the owner. I'd get an independent check from a VAG specialist if you are concerned by what you are hearing.
Any update on this issue, personally I'd never ever buy 3rd party COPs, VAG has had so many issues with them, I'd stick with their choice of supplier, ie Eldor or Bremi. Injectors can cause problems that get logged as misfires, though as you have been smelling petrol at the exhaust then I'd guess it is a coil or coil wiring issue.
