Is the Dynamic drive select mode the same as the 'S' on the S-Tronic box?

Just a quick one guys I'm not sure if this has been answered before or not...

Is the 'S' mode on the S-tronic box just a shortcut to the Dynamic Mode through the drive select? it shows exactly the same characteristics, or is the 'S' mode just to sharpen the transmission/gear changes and exhaust note and nothing else?

As I know Dynamic changes steering, chassis, Quattro setting and transmission.
so I was under the impression maybe the 'S' just changes the Transmission and exhaust note only and nothing else?

    Thanks in advance.

No they aren't the same - in fact they are quite different. If you drive the car in dynamic mode it is a little sharper throttle-wise but still keeps relatively high gears. In S mode the throttle response is even sharper and the gears stick in much lower gears. I've never had it go into 7th in S mode yet it's happy to go into 7th in dynamic.

As for the rest of the system, dynamic is different to the rest to give sportier steering etc, but there is no S mode for these setups.

ah right ok cheers that explains that a bit more for me! they feel very similar in characteristics that's why I asked, but when I'm in dynamic mode and then pull back on the stick it changes back to 'D' and its much more subdued driving like in comfort which is strange, even though I was in dynamic...

However I don't know about prefacelift, but if I select Dynamic in DS, it changes the gearbox mode to S anyway.

From reading back, prefacelifts didn't do this I don't think?

Yes, in the FL model at least, when you first select dynamic it puts the gearbox into S mode, but if you start the car with it in dynamic, it just reverts to D. I drive everywhere in Eco (let the haters chime in) but when I need a burst I flick it into S and let the horses do their work. (Unless I'm driving on a very fun road that is, then I'm in dynamic with the gearbox in S - Alston pass is great for this mode :D )

In my current car (Golf R32 DSG) normal town driving in S I'm lucky if I get out of 3rd!

From my experience of using it I'd say it's only really suited for the track, that's if the S3 works pretty much the same.

that's what I'm trying to say, so the Dynamic in ADS DOES put the gearbox into sport, so no different to just flicking the box into sport? expect with dynamic you get steering and chassis alterations...

Depends if you are selecting dynamic via ADS every time you get in the car. If you select dynamic then the gearbox goes into Sport. Then if you turn the car off and get in the next morning, ADS is still in dynamic but the gearbox is no longer in Sport, it goes into D. So in this circumstance you will find you need to put it back into S

Do the facelift A3's have the Aux button?

Dynamic mode goes in to sport gearbox automatically. If you hit dynamic and also pull the gearstick it will go out of sport mode!

If you leave the car in dynamic and switch off, when you get back in the car you will need to cycle through the driving modes and select dynamic again otherwise it's not in "proper" dynamic. Not sure why Audi set it up that way other than to keep mpg low etc upon startup.

I actually thought the opposite! Why do they put it into sport mode when selecting dynamic. Dynamic, to me, is something you might want to drive around on a daily basis. I would not drive around in sport on a daily basis - too much engine whine for driving stop/start on the daily commute ;-)

For my daily driving it's dynamic and the transmission goes back and right into manual mode on every startup. I think I've let it shift for itself four times in the month I've had it.

So if you are in Eco mode and pull the gear stick down to S mode you will now be in full dynamic mode for steering and suspension as well as the obligatory S for the gearbox and engine?

No. Pull down on the gearstick just gives sports gearbox (hold revs for longer) not dynamic! Need to select dynamic for dynamic ;)

My 'broon saloon' comes alive when I put the ADS in Dynamic mode. Catches everyone by surprise as I'm suddenly 45 meters ahead of them.

I'm in a TDI and never select ECO mode. It's boring, gears are too long and it makes virtually no difference to MPG. The only thing it really does is allow the car to coast when you lift off everything to slow. Just be careful when you try this for the first time as the car won't slow at its normal rate as the car doesn't use engine breaking to slow you down.

The wife's Leon DSG(7 speed dry box) is like this in normal mode ...Don't like it at all there's no engine braking and will run away with you if you are not used to it ..

I've the same box, Paul. In D it coasts a little but not a lot (sound like Paul Daniels!!). But it Eco its very alarming the first time you use it. Hence I've never gone back to it.

Just started a thread on this, did a quick run in Eco and sport, sport was returning 2.5mpg more than Eco on a 60 mph run.

Cheers TX, so if I I'm in dynamic and knock it out of sport, it maintains the characteristics of the dynamic expect for the transmission and holding the gearing at higher revs. But the steering, chassis and engine note stay the same...
