This thread is doing a lot better over in the 8P section.

I agree mate, this is like banging my head against a brick wall - obviously we're idiots for making the change 'so' many are hesitating to make because they think the 8L is better value...... and next week on Jackanorey

Im off to a Merc forum to tell the fella who's just bought a brand new C63 how stupid he is and how much he'll lose in the first year. Then i'll proceed to tell him he'l be better buying an old M3 cos its a drivers car and will out whoop the enterprise.....When i'm done im off out to play on my BMX

Not really mate, I could sell tomorrow and still be 3k up from when i bought :) (but i was fortunate)

You must know, you did it with yours didn't you mate, bought when it was much much newer?

It is annoying though fella, and if im honest part of the reason i'll be selling soon (that alone wouldn't pursuade me), although the main reasons being the fact I am looking at fuel costs (I am doing more motorway miles), depreciation, practicality (I have two large dogs as you know) and will be found by the end of the year in a B7 A4 or C6 A6 Avant 3.0 TDI TLV - the A6 is pipping it because of the boot size and more upto date tech in the cabin.

Must grow up eventually and kids won't be far behind ;)

Very shrewd, yes I had mine and it was 16 and have spent x amount so the thing owes me more than I'd want to know.

Well at least you've had a go with it,if its not practical then it has to go,you still have the mutts in your S3 :asskicking:

Sod that for a game of soldiers,my youngest said 'dad are you going to get another racer ?' when I said mine is going

Yup not nice thinking what it's cost.....think of the fun you've had though :) burning up all those custom coded S3's :)

Yarp the mutts indeed travel in my motor :) its just my Pyrenean weighs in at nearly 70kg's now and lifting her in isn't something I enjoy doing, hence the Avant, plus I don't take them in it as often as i'd like as I have the ball ache of dropping the seats everytime, another reason the A6 is coming up trumps....i just hate the overall size and the rear - although selling to myself by getting a decent spec with LED rears, front adaptives and a few other bits. Plus mapped the 3.0 allegedly gives something like 600nm of torque, varying BHP which I can live with - and £40 will more than likely take me 220 miles instead of the present 150 :) win win

haha you've got an expensive child there :) naa i'll have something else eventually, Im just looking at the bigger picture for the minute, the extra money I can pay off the mortgage which means less time till I get the dream house....then i'll be all over the car scene again

Your not banging your head against a wall tim, I think your opinions are fair, more valuable than nitwits that argue the toss and havent lived with both.
As for depreciation since when does that matter to a performance car enthusiast with 20k spare cash lol, it'd be worth the joy in owning one.

Tim does the sportback version have the room you need?

Karl why dont you just direct your threads at me dude. You ve done it in a couple of threads now...

Tim i dont understand why you cannot understand why people dont think the 8P is good value at the moment. At the end of the day people buy what they think is worth the value. When people think the 8P is worth paying X amount of money extra than what they pay now they will simple as.

I appreciate that Karl, cheers mate

When I bought I knew the depreciation was going to be higher than most, which is why i was looking at a certain price range where I had noticed that the bulk had dropped off - your never going to get the best of both worlds. It has been a total pleasure owning it, the biggest gripe I have is that when they facelifted it they didn't fit the latest gen Audi bits.....I've recently fitted two RNS510 units in Mk5 Golfs and it kicks the **** out of the RNS-E unit. That said I still much prefer the F/L car with the DRL's, they look amazing and make the car stand out...

Sportback won't i'm afraid (plus the boots slightly smaller i think?), I have a retriever too and the A4 avant is looking too small in the boot area for both, hence the A6. Another consideration was the safety aspect, if i have an accident id prefer them be in the boot, 70kg in the back of my seat wont be good :( also if I take them upto say Scotland I cant take luggage :)

Nat you simply don't understand and i've tried explaining...therefore I am now wasting my breath.

The difference for me is huge between this and my 8L!! whether you think it is or not is irrelevant. You could argue all day long, there are much worse things to spend your money on like a brand new VXR - then you'll know depreciation!! I bought knowing full well what it was going to cost, but I have the money so why not? I dont get why you dont think its good value...check out the 8L depreciation over its life span and you'll see a very similar pattern, its not suddenly going to cost 10k because you can get an 8L for 3-4k now.....thats not how it works. Theres a million examples of people spending money on cars that are far worse value....... a new Merc 1.8? which sell in their thousands, Vectra's which lose 90% overnight virtually! i could go on all day long

nath, with respect, unless one has owned both, theres no need for persistant arguing.
Fair enough, you dont think they're worth it, i think that about a lot of cars, but I wont tell an owner otherwise. When ive not had one, its just silly.
You said your interested in a 135, how much are they? If around 20k I'd say theyre big competition for the 8p in terms of ,car for the money.

Dude i understand and agree that the 8P is better than a 8L but I dont think for the price of a 8P they are not worth the price.

For the price of a facelifted 8P I would rather something else which I feel is a better car overall or buy a cheaper car and having change. What is wrong with that opinion.

Ye thats fair enough I havent owned one but ive had alot of experience with them and have never thought aw I want to own one of these. You dont need to own a car to make your decision on weather its for you or if it worth the money over what you already own. I was just saying if i was looking to spend 20k on a car I dont think a 8P would leave me feeling like ive got alot of car for my money but its an opionion ini.

Ye i am after a 135i and hoping to spend about 20-21k for one which i feel for the money is a good car and im happy to pay 20-21k for or 16k extra than my car. Obviously this is a complete personal choice and what I want from a car. Others will think differently and their intitled to their opionon, im not going to argue with them and tell them why its worth it, its up to them if they think its worth it. Ini. Tim thought the 8P is worth the extra cash and bought one but for me a 8P isnt.

You could spend less than £20K and get a superb all round car the Nissan 370Z, there's a lot of car for the money.

it is a matter of opinion and I did look at a 135 when i was searching.... for me though the prospect of rear wheel drive and worse mpg than already get (plus i couldnt get the dogs in).....fell against

Even if all of the above wasn't a stumbling block, the 135 isn't anything wey ahead of an S3, the interior is the usual BMW type - they all look the same, the basic trim is crap and when you do spec it up you have the same options as an S3 - You see, I cant see how you think a 135 is worth the money...... its the same type of car! but then again your choice - my thinking is that you may prefer it subliminally because its a totally different brand therefore totaly dif design - thats my opinion

135 or S3 - Escort or Astra - same debarcle

Thats fair enough Tim. Thats your opinon on the 135i and i respect that, is doesnt suit your needs or what you want/need from a car. Im not going to argue saying why its worth it because if you dont think its worth your money that perfectly fine. I do, and thats why im going to buy one of them instead of a S3. Funny enough I was chatting to a guy yesterday about his 135i and he had a 8P S3 before it. Couple of ASN members have moved to Bmw recently, some will never leave the brand. Iggu moved from a stage 2+ S3 to a 135i recently. The main reason for me moving is I dont want 4wd and fancy trying/owning a Bmw brand and feel the 135i is a modern version of a e46 m3 but can be tuned alot easier. May love, may be straight back to Audi.

I will agree with you on the interiors are better in audis than bmw. I think the 8l interiors are still modern and classy even by todays standards.

Lets not turn this into a which is better thread though, bmw or audi lol. Lets keep it to is the 8P S3 worth the money and see what other members opinions are

I agree that the 8p S3 is obviously the better car, it would be silly to think otherwise but I do agree with Nat, I haven't driven an 8p and I'm not to worried if I do, I really don't see it beneficial in my position to pay an extra 10k minimum to own the 8p when my current 8L S3 is still such a joy to drive, it maybe ageing but it still feels special to be out in...

If however I came into a decent amount of money for what ever reason and had some expendable cash then yes I'd make the step, but to save my hard earned and blow that amount on an upgrade doesn't make sense in my situation, it all really depends on your own current situation...

I dont think anybody is saying its not a nice car, it certainly is, but worth it..?

As a used car, yes, I wouldn't buy a brand spanking new one though!... let someone else take the hit. :)

Loads of finance deals out there any one can get a brand spanking new S3 on
PCP
Lease
HP
Company car

So it's a question of your needs vs value for money

If I had 21k cash in bank then I'd buy B7 RS4
If I had 10-12k then RS6
tons of mileage in style then 8L S3 (no thought of dipreciation(sp)

Its funny this if you go on a bmw site im on about the m series here, you would never find a post of the newer Ms dissing the previous versions, its all about evolution, the 8p would never have been born if it was not for the 8L
Ive had 3 Ms e30 e36 and the e46 and the e30 was the ultimate....
Loved coming to audi they just have that little special look about them...

Yeah depends if you are inclined to finance a depreciating asset

lol do any cars make money ?
If you are worried about losing money on a car then you'd best take up walking..all cars depreciate.

My Mk2 Golf has gained in value! :moa:

my ex's Mini we sold on an 04 plate seems to have lost a couple hundred in two years since we sold it :)

But then they are the least depreciating modern car, or at least they were

No run of the mill car appreciates, but servicing the finance + depreciation every time you drive :)

Well it used to be something like 80% of uk cars where on finance/ lease

that figure sounds very fictional.... I used to sell cars back in 2000 for a main dealer and what I saw was nowhere near 80%.... the figure will have reduced regardless as more and more finance packages become secured to the owner as opposed to the car itself.....essentially a personal loan which won't be an easy figure to collate or gauge
