Is it possible to put 2.7 turbo from B5 into B6?

First time poster, but big reader of the forum. Converted to Audi Quattro some time ago and there's no going back now!

Anyway, my question is whether it is possible and/or practical to transplant the 2.7 bi-turbo engine from a B5 (RS4 or S4) into a B6 (2002 Quattro A4)? If so, can I keep the dash and engine software of the newer car? Will the transmission handle the power? I'd be looking to upgrade the package to push out 400-450bhp, but keep it reliable (with plenty of care).

I already have the 2002 car, but would need to source the 2.7 engine etc.

Don't bother telling me it'll cost unless you have a really good idea of price/s.

Thanks in advance.

anythings possible should you be determined enough and have time enough, have you done a conversion before?

you have to change clocks, keys, ecu, and could probably make an adapter to the transmission and mountings for the engine

Are you wanting the conversion just so you can get the Figures of 450BHP??
No, I "could" get 400 out of my existing lump with uprated internals, fmic & a good turbo. I want the luxury of my Audi with a punch similar to my old Subaru (Jap Import with a twin-scroll package pushing out 350+bhp in a lighter car!), but with good day to day drivability and reliability. A strained 1.8T just won't compare to a bi 2.7 in many ways.

Why oh why did Audi drop it from the B6 lineup for a lazy, heavy V8??? Yes, I've driven one and, as a day to day driver the newer V8 4.2 would be great. However, it would bore me to tears on a track day.

So, my options are to tune my 1.8T, drop in a 2.7T or switch to an A3 (losing proper Quattro in favour of IMO an inferior Haldex system) and tune the 3.2 engine with a turbo package (easy 350-400bhp). Have driven a TT with a 3.2 turbo package and was sorely tempted to buy it but the baby seat wouldnt fit in the back!

As the yanks like to say, theres no replacement for displacement. But I would say that i don't like lazy cars, ie V8 NA.

My thoughts exactly, Ive always said why did they throw away the turbo's when it came to the B6 S4.

I asked the question but you know your stuff by sounds of it so Obviously you've looked into it.
Ive had a few scoobies and miss the power totally, im waiting on the yanks to get back to me about a package for my Turbo upgrade, 325 - 350 bhp will do me alright.Dont wanna be greedy ;)

I agree the 1.8T wont compare to the 2.7 Bi turbo transplant which would be **** hot if you can pull it off.
I havnt heard anyone doing it as of yet though, Ive asked the question a few times across the pond.
Seen some engine go on ebay aswell so they're out there.
Its all the excitement of the Turbo car which is why id never go back to non turbo, No way!

Yeah, IF i dont pull it off, and i'm concerned that nobody else seems to have done it (ie impossible or prohibitively expensive), then i'll go for a turbo upgrade package for my 1.8T. Perhaps an eliminator or something from JBS - their twin scroll really appeals. There's nothing quite like a turbo.

VAGTech now do a brake package from the RS4 and I'd be looking at getting some suspension upgrades (maybe a TEIN package with EDFC). Tein is not the best but there adjustable package is one of the few out there and works pretty well. I wont compromise road comfort for track performance or vice versa.

Oh, and some Recaro seats from the front of an S4/RS4 would be nice too. I already have leather but theyre not supportive enough on track days. Blew my water pump plastic impeller last time... :)

No real experience of doing a big conversion before, but i rarely leave any car standard, old man was a mechanic and i can spin a wrench fairly well.

However, I would probably be looking to pay someone to do this for me as I just dont have the time (work long hours and have an 8 month old son).

Few RS4 interior bits here, including seats  I appreciate you won't exactly rush out and spend all your hard earned on these, but I though you might be interested

Check out www.audizine.com, if anyone has done the conversion then these guys will have done.
If you want to do the conversion then I think it would be easier to buy a late model S4 and strip it for bits I've seen some nice B5 S4s going for £5/6k, so you'd have everything to hand.

Or of course go and buy a gorgeous B5 RS4 avant :)

Ive always been on the look out for the S4 recaro interior, theres a set on ebay now but he's asking £1100 cash..
James got the Steal of the century, If I remember rightly, he only paid £180 for the S4 recaro interior!!!!

The RS4 interior looks the Business but Ive read quite few reviews that they can be quite uncomfortable after an Hour or so...but still, I wouldnt say No.

As andy says, if anyone has done the conversion then it will be the yanks.
They're so lucky, Over there the Mods are sooooo much cheaper compared to here :(

will be expensive if you are not doing it yourself, they'll need to set up a jig and fabricate, also you will be without that car for a while while the work is being done. maybe easier to get the twin scroll bolt on kit from jbs + whatever internal work they recommend to guarantee your system, go see their demo car and see if its anything like you want.

Where's Siena? He normally can smell a conversion thread like a shark can sense blood in the sea!
This would be an interesting one for sure!

If the 2.7 proves to be too difficult or prohibitively expensive then what about a 3.0 V6? At least that engine was available in the B6 so software, fit etc shouldn't be an issue. I expect that there are companies offering performance upgraded for it so the sort of power you want may be possible.

I'm considering getting a B6 A4 again, but my the only drawback is the limited engine choice. I've already had a 1.8T and although there's a lot you can do with it, it's still always going to be a feeble 4 cylinder 1.8, the 3.0 V6 is dire, for an engine of its size and doesn't sound special enough.

The 2.7t from the B5 S4/RS4 and A6 is an absolute gem, I've been looking into putting it inside the B6 shell, it would make an awesome car. They are so easy to work on, a simple remap on the S4 makes it a sub 5 second 0-60 car. Put the K04's in instead of the K03 and you've got some serious power.

I'd be interested to see if this is viable as I would certainly consider it, either that or a turbo'd 3.0.

does the B6 not come as a 2.7 t/t anyway? I thought I saw one somewhere.

See uve had an S3 too. I was considering - they are a good looking car, but I just dont like the Haldex system. I know its clever and may end up being the way fwd, but i dont like the way it drives as standard and altho the perf controller can fix that it doesnt change the power limitations of the system. I like my Quattro (that is, proper Quattro - not what Audi have now started trying to call Quattro).

Anyway, I digress - yes, I could just shell out for a B5 RS4 Avant but what fun (other than the obvious) would that be?

I'm expecting to speak to a selection of specialist tuners next week about the feasibility of the project. If the answer is stupid money then i will just look at the twin-scroll, something similar OR a B5 RS4.

Insurance on highly modified cars is actually much easier and cheaper than many would have u believe. Admittedly, confused.com is going to poop at yr list of mods but who needs them. A-Plan/Line are really good for special cars and if you love yr car a tracker is the way to go and helps keep down costs.

I hear you I always stick to big audi's because it has permanent 4x4 and longitudinally mounted engine, but there are ways to lock up the transmission permanently on a haldex

however I dont see the fun spending 10k having someone else do an engine transplant for you. get the B5 RS4 much much better car and a future classic. or if you want to keep your car the cheapest way to make it 450 is probably twin scroll on your 1.8t. transplant will be a more expensive option than both probably

I believe the 2.7tt was available in the A6 for a period (up to 2001 I think). Perhaps there are more similarities with this model of A6 and the B6 then there is with the B5?

Either way it means you can also trawl for cheap/damaged A6s for parts.

N

Yep, the A6's (and allroad - anyone remember them?) had the 2.7t engines. Even in a big car like the A6 with its sluggish tiptronic transmission those things moved. They were available in 250 or 280 bhp, not sure if the 280's had upgraded internals or just a different map though.

I'm pretty sure someone on audizine.com has put a 2.7t in their B6, will try and dig out a link.

I'll stick with my 'classic' 99 fireblade and still look at the 2.7t in my B6. But I do hear you on the B5 RS4 Avant.....

This 'could' potentially be good news. I'll need to look up what similarities there are between the two models, but my fear is that it'll turn out that age of A6 was closer to the A4/B5 than A4/B6....

We'll see - fingers crossed. But, if nothing else, it provides extra options for donor parts!

posted it elsewhere, but what about a 3.0 V6 with a PES kit? for some nice linear power delivery, as all good track cars should have!

Agreed on the 1.8T as well, as much as it will wind up i woudl only ever see one in a small car, an A2 perhaps?

the chaps over the water never got much int he way of RS/S's until recently so they have SC kits of the shelf for the 2.8V6 and the 3.0V6. with the dollar being favourable...

ABT, oh nice! There is a ABT Q7 i see regularly at the gym with a 4.2 supercharged, the chap used the words stick and poo a lot... i did a google and then the same as the lad above.. HOW MUCH!

$5300 = c £2600. Maybe a more attractive proposition for those with 3.0 engines. Otherwise alot of aggro selling and buying cars...

But not a bad deal for the gains...
