I've had this problem for a while intermittently but am now at the point of it happening all the time and my mot is due soon so need to get it sorted.

Basically when I turn the ignition on I get the 'Def' error message displayed and the speedo shoots all the way round and stays there. Once I start driving over 30-35mph the speedo then drops down and works fine at anything over that speed. Once you slow down again it then shoots back round.
I know it has in the past stored a fault code but haven't checked recently.
Whilst it looks like a faulty dash pod, which seems to be a known thing I wondered if it could be a faulty speed sensor on the gearbox but would that throw up it's own fault code?

Any suggestions or similar issues?

It is annoying. I might just unplug the sensor for the mot so the needle doesn't budge when the ignition is turned on. I don't think it's the sensor as I put the climate control into diagnostic mode to show speed and it worked fine when the speedo needle was buggering about.
