My car feels flat most of the time; where there should be a lump of torque there just isn't. It seems to idle a little lumpy (recent pressure test showed no leaks) and it sounds as if the engine is strained when i accelerate and particularly on overrun after having just accelerated hard

very occasionally i get an intermittent P0011 DTC code appear; if i reset it it'll be a while before i see it return
    http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16395/P0011/000017

I did this check at the weekend: http://workshop-manuals.com/audi/a3...m/checking_function_of_variable_valve_timing/

    passed OK

Sometimes I feel as if there is a lump of torque that seems to kick in later than it should; beyond 4000rpm

I've looked at the cam phase adjustment and it was -5°KW - does that indicate anything useful?

It was supposed to be in the garage this morning but today it felt fine, pulling heroically tbh

Cars done ~175k, had a new cam chain tensioner at ~105k; the head came off and had new valve stem seal and what not around 132k -- hoping its not another tensioner required

any ideas? could it possibly be something like a crank sensor as per: http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/lumpy-boost-soft-drop-in-power-at-75-max-rpm.329583/

Set point not reached is a mechanical issue typically...

Could be oil pressure, could be the tensioner...

Engaging the VVT sooner and keeping it open is a fairly std trick on BT conversions as it improves spool and torque so if its being lazy it could explain the issue you are experiencing..

Logging may be needed to see when VVT is switched in to see if its actually doing what its supposed to...

Not sure on the -5kw figure... from memory they sit at zero ish then advance to 20-22 from 2-3k rpm (would need to check the relevant tables to confirm)... stays advanced for 'some' rpm before dropping off again...

K04 turbo'd engines are the only ones that use VVT actively under normal running conditions, K03 engines just use VVT during cold start/warmup...

No rattles? low oil pressure and/or faulty tensioner normally has a distinct rattle

OK; thanks Paul. I'll log it and see what it comes back with - I'm guessing MB91 is what were interested here? specified/actual cam adjustment.

Sometimes i thinks it's rattly when it runs; I'll take it to a more qualified ear and see what they think.

Sorry; that -5°KW was adaption not adjustment (MB93 - Camshaft adaption values Intake - Phase Position). So I'm guessing/wondering if the ECU is compensating for something? Stretched cam chain?

    so i logged the car twice;

first day when the car felt torquey low down: https://1drv.ms/x/s!AguUp0ayyWg18Y5VY0GKAO88NWixZA

and yesterday when it felt pretty lackluster: https://1drv.ms/x/s!AguUp0ayyWg18Y5UCPAERtxwU5n-EQ

I've highlighted the point at which i did the full throttle pull in 3rd gear

looks like the VVT is working as it should be to me. The only difference I can see is that the second log drops to a cam adjustment angle of -1°KW whereas the first log never drops below 0°KW

the cam phase adaption values remains at -5°KW --- what is this indicative of? could it be the cam belt out by a tooth?

also is °KW German for °crank-angle

thanks, looks like you were getting an over-retarded error whilst I'm getting an over-advanced error (intermittent). The engine map is standard and i use 5W40 oil - shouldn't be getting too hot/thin

Yea, I was running a hybrid... Had switchable maps, one of which was "torque monster mode". No prizes for guessing which setting I was constantly in! :tearsofjoy:

Still, thought I'd mention... Sounded like a very similar fault!?

well last week it started sounding terrible and then Friday it sounded catastrophic; I abandoned it at the garage and they have said that the bottom chain guide of the cam chain tensioner has broken up

When I stripped my old engine down after it blew the tensioner guides were really brittle.
Luckily they’re available to purchase separately.
Hopefully you’ve not incurred any damage elsewhere

    Usually a blue/grey transit custom on a 64 plate but occasionally a grey T5 on a 13 plate.
I sometimes catch you when you’re leaving work or most of the time in the morning as you come out of Helston.

Hopefully I’ll be seeing you again soon!
