I'm seriously co sodering buying this DTM.

It's a big turbo build by Storm Developments... just wondered if anyone has any info about it's history.

Allegedly the engine is built to run 650+ bhp, and the turbo can deliver it, the fueling needs upgrading (secondary injectors need setting up?) and it will do over 600, it's currently running 440 now, does that sound right ?

I've asked for invoices etc, hoping to get them tomorrow.

Screenshot 20211114 224738 Facebook

I meant to attach the picture to the original post .....

On a good note, its never failed an MOT and no advisories.
103k miles is not bad either.

that suggests to me its been looked after since new, also only covered 10k in the last 3 years.

If it has all the paperwork for parts and work and runs without reliability issues then why not just run it at the stated 440.
I'd be looking at all receipts carefully to ensure all the bits that needed upgrading were in a new clutch assembly.
that's double the original BUL engine output.

I've seen this for sale on various media platforms. Seems a solid build but the difference between 440 and nigh on 600 is vast. It's been expensive enough for me to cross the 350 barrier.

As mentioned study any invoices and question everything. For the advertised price its a properly quick car. If they're honest sellers and you're a serious buyer they won't mind the questions....

Do you have any website links to the sale item.

cheers

Just had a snoop at the advert.
A few things come to mind straight away.
Interior in very good condition and it has the memory seat option to.
It is said to be running 440 bhp , still has OEM airbox fitted, now that either means the OEM airbox setup is fine ( as many of us have already stated) or they skimped on the build...
I'd have expected a catch can of some description fitted.

The only downside to this car is the price, it's not really a factory standard DTM which may put a lot of buyers off, to be a future classic it needs to be pretty well original, and a lot of buyers don't buy highly modded cars, yes they do it themselves but buying someone else's is a different proposition.

Thanks for the input everyone... I'm waiting for the invoices to be sent to me. Hopefully today.

I've had a few pictures of the built engine when it was ready to go in. It was built by storm developments.

One conflict I see is that the seller states its been running this power for around 4 years (so 2017).

Storm developments Facebook page has it down as 2014 when they did the gt30 upgrade, so that's a bit longer than 4 years... invoices will hopefully shed more light on that.

I don't care that its not original. I'm not buying it for appreciation. I'm buying it for something fun to drive (and I love a sleeper). Value Appreciation might be a nice bonus but if it doesn't happen I'm OK with that.

@john13. Yes 440 to 600 is a big difference in cost, but they claim this was built for 600+ and just needs the fueling (secondary injectors connecting) to finish the job, I've not seen any tfsi with secondary injection before. Curious... ...

I will post back when I get the invoices.

So I haven't got all of the info through. It was built in house by Storm for one of the owners at the time. I managed to get a few more details but they will email me the full spec on letterheaded pages for proof soon....

The engine is fully forged with wossner pistons, IE Rods, 83mm over bore, fluid damper, balance shift delete/oil pump mod. Balanced crank Gtx30 ext wastegated. SMFW and paddle clutch.

It has secondary injectors because they were going to put a syvecs ECU on it, but never got to that. So it needs a few grand on one of those and mapping. Or just bigger main injectors and map the factory ECU again.

I'm keen, got my insurance quoted . Going to send him a dipper tonight and then go pick it up on the 27th.

Will likely enjoy it over the winter as it is, and then get the remaining power out of it come summer.

Well it was a long trip. And the drivers window regulator gave up on me so had to have the heaters blasting all the way back (and heated seat). The weather couldn't have been much worse .
It needs a battery too soon. Found out the hard way messing trying to get the window up with the engine off, had to get a jump.
Still enjoyed the drive back. Will get it sorted tomorrow (hope this storm passes soon)

Overall very happy with the purchase.

Its first night on the drive was a bit undignified .

Bin bags and a bit of tape to keep the storm out.

Blocked in by the Mrs fiesta, and the doorbell was set to notify me loudly if anyone came near it.

Managed to get it into a local place this morning, new window reg fitted, new battery fitted. All resolved now.

It needs a good clean and polish next. It was clean when I got it but not now. Let's hope the storm gives us a break soon.
As far as further modifications and more parts. I will just be enjoying it for now. But it's getting syvecs S6 standalone engine management in Summer, switchable maps, low boost, high boost with or without asbo noises.

If a powervalve exhaust comes up at the right price I will get it. This one is a bit noisey and droney at times, you can learn how to manage it by how you drive though. Cruise Control helps.

Bluetooth calls from my Galaxy X Fold 3 were a bit choppy, I might need a newer Bluetooth module, or it mightve been weak battery. Or I may be able to change the phone setup to make it compatible... so that's something to work on.

My mate came round for a nosey in his B5 this afternoon.

Mods - Any chance I can change this thread title to InertiaUK's DTM or something like that rather than start a new one ?

/edit, looks like the trim from around my projector has rattled off.

Not to worry I want to Joey Mod them anyway will get it sorted.

What are your initial thoughts on it?

Does it feel that much faster etc and has it had some decent suspension uprating over OE fitment.

All very positive Rob...

I've had a few B6 A4s (and an S4) in the past. They have a smell don't they, its like a new car smell that never goes away.
My very first feeling when I opened the door and that smell hit me, it just took me back and reminded me of all the good times in those cars. The condition is immaculate, it felt like sitting in a new car along with the smell.

The 2 fastest cars I've had would be my 2+ S3 at 380bhp and my B6 S4 which had headers and a few mods at simar power, maybe a bit less.

This thing at 440 feels leagues above those.
I should imagine vs the S3 0-60 would be similar as the s3 has less weight, and less drivetrain power loss, it does feel kind of similarish in time, but this feels like it pulls harder, hard to explain.
However 60+ (I wont say any more) is biblical. It just pulls harder and harder. Much faster than the s3 was.
Thanks to its various mods Inc the lightweight pullies and lightweight aluminium SMFW it revs a lot more freely. I also struggle to explain this, but even before boost it builds the revs easier than other engines.

I can't wait to get a syvecs on it! ~650 is going to be immense. (42% increase over what it is now)

The brakes are immense. I had b7 RS4 brakes on my S4, these are much better. I can drive it hard with confidence I can easily and quickly stop.

The AP coils are wound down low right now, speed humps are a very slow crawl, curbs are a hazard with such lows and such low profile tyres.
My mother in law with her bad knee wouldn't be able to get in it.... some people would say that's a negative......
However the ride is perfect, stiff with no roll, but not bone shaking, its really nice, even over a rough road covered in shallow pot holes it's smooth.

Everything about the car feels tight and precise. Like a new car but performance oriented.

I didn't pay 10k. It was a long trip for me and I did my negotiating before I set off.

If it was more local and I turned up to see it and negotiate i think I would've just handed over 10k. So I got lucky there.

So yeh... pretty happy over all.

Ok, so a bit of an update on this one is that it does not have a GTX35 on it after all.
@Sandip found an old (ish) advert on here by a bloke called John, I don't know how I missed that! https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/a4-dtm-edition.415791/

I think he had Storm Developments build the engine to his spec, and he didn't like how laggy the turbo was, and being on just the 4 S3 injectors still and the OEM ECU, the trade off for it was lots of lag and only ~450bhp on a short power band so you had to really rev it for any kind of boost (until eventual SYVECS, which never happened).
They decided they should remove the GTX35 and install an 'Owen developments GTX2860r' which produces close to the power figures, but boosts from low down the rev range. and map that in on the stock ECU So that's what happened making the car much more drivable.

Apparently (wating for John to confirm) the GTX2860r put in it has a special (Brass I think?) stronger core, which means it can handle being spanked a bit. So based on that, storm can still do SYVECS on it, and get some more decent power out of it, although I'm yet to learn what that might be. I guess we find out on the day if I do it :superman:.

They have kindly sent me the lightly used GTX35 which I have now (arrived just now) if I did want to use it, but from what I've heard/read I'm better off just getting what I can out of the 28.

Nobody is really at fault here btw, its one of those things, the car was built as it was advertised, then it just got lost along the way that the turbo had been changed. And they sent me the one advertised, so no problems at all.

Its not changed my opinion about the car, and if I sell that GT35 turbo (which are £1700 new) that's around a grand less its cost me, taking it very close to the price of a standard clean one! When I look at the big picture, its a good thing it all went down like this. I wouldn't want a laggy car, and its further cost savings, so meh.

I was supplied some pictures of the engine build itself, just to give me confidence that its all nice and strong...

I spent Friday afternoon and night playing with my new toy... after 1 week.of ownership and no time to play...

I started getting ( ! ) brake warnings intermittently, only on the odd occasion and it did that horrible high pitched 'somethings broken or you need fuel' beep. Flashed up on DIS the went away in a few seconds.

Did some electrical investigating and found it had 2 fuse spurs.
1 to make the fuel pump always run full rather than on demand from the ECU, and the other one was in the 'towing connection' fuse to some yellow wires going into the dash.

A quick WhatsApp to @j4jon and it turns out it had column mounted guages at some point. the yellow one was to power them and the wires are tucked away now.

I wiggled the wires and the DIS gave that warning, they were earthing I think where they had been tucked away so I unplugged the spur and replace the fuse, that fixed that little gremlin.

I got VCDS on it last night too

Cleard all the faults mostly caused by the battery issues I had on the night of purchase.

None came back except for the RNSE complaining it can't find a TV tuner which isn't in the car so re coded that. Clears it and have 0 faults across the car

Did a few tweaks, alarm beep, unlock all doors instead of pressing twice. Seatbelt warning off (I wear it but the warning is a pita if you have an empty child's seat on passenger seat).

I wanted to do needle sweep but whilst it will talk to the clocks the adaptation button is disabled. Not sure if this is possible.

Did some logging. On a private road of course

The end if third gear is blowing late 330's to early 340's G/s of intake airflow fairly consistently. Which calculates to ~430bhp.

If there was enough room for a 4th gear pull with a bit more load I reckon a peak of 440 isn't impossible.

It's booked on the rolling Road on the 11th, I will post results.

Uh-oh!!!! Today was a bad day!

So it smelled a bit fuely in the cabin this morning driving to work. I thought it was just the car warming up tbh and not much to worry about, I noticed it more idling than driving. I checked under the bonnet and car and couldn't see any evidence of a problem. Forgot about it and got on with my busy day.

On the way back it got really strong the smell. A friend lives half way home, so I called at his worried I had a fireball brewing. And I was right.

The fuel rail from the HPFP (a part as old as the car) has a hairline crack in it. Fuel is misting into the air as a fine vapour!! Scary.

I left her at his and got a lift home. I've arrange recovery to a specialist in Liverpool tomorrow, not sure on their workload though and how quick they can get the pipe replaced.

I had an issue similar to this with my S3, but at least once it was fixed it never happened again, so I'm not too worried long term, just short term I will be without a car for a bit. (should've kept my old one a bit longer)

A work friend will recover it on his truck. He assures me he can use chocks and get it on and off no issues, he's seen how low it is. Said its fine and he's saving me a fortune. I will put diesel in his truck and buy him some beers.

That is not ideal chap, but not the end of the world.
Maybe it's a stress fracture from previous engine work that has now just let go.
Still good job you spotted it when you did , close call indeed, had it been the exh/turbo side then i hate to think.

best of luck with it.

Sorry to hear you’ve had some issues, I guess that’s the territory to be expected when the mods are pretty extreme!

Hopefully you can get it back and sorted soon fella, it looks magnificent! I can only imagine what another 200bhp feels like in the B7… mighty indeed.

Riverside put a new fuel rail on for me, wasn't even that expensive really. all sorted now, its even more enjoyable without the odd whiff of unburnt fuel.

Dyno run is still booked for Saturday.
