HPI Clear cars which were written off

C'mon Mike a Cat D car is at least 33% less than a not Cat D otherwise why are people putting them back on the road and keeping that hidden.

TX.

There cheap to buy (damaged that is) relatively easy to fix (ebay flooded with parts, probably mostly stolen.lol) and sell for good money once repaired.

Do i agree with it ethically... no. Is it a good business model, of course. (Except the potentially not telling the customer its been in a shunt bit)

Personally i think its more down to how insurance companies "report/record" a vehicle thats been damaged....

You crash, they pay out, cars is now theres to do as they please as theyve technically brought it off you...

Who do they report the "claim/purchase" too?
Are they even legally bound to report it?

The car is now legally theres to do as they please....

So if neither of the above (what i suspect is the issue!) then surely they just truck the remains to the nearest CoPart yard and sell it for as much as they can to recuperate what they paid out to the now former owner of it.

Good work OP

typed in my reg as you do, nearly shat a brick when i saw the salvage alert. paid the £4 to get the report and luckily the car was auctioned by a finance company as 'used'.
looking at the previous owner list, the owner before it was auctioned only had the car 8 months, and the additional info section says the car had finance on it at auction time that was going to be paid off in 48 hours of the sale, so im guessing it was a repossesion?

either way, great site, and definitely gonna be using it next time i buy a car.

I suspect (I know it has just not how bad) my r32 Had been in a bang hpi checked as on finance but after having it the drivers seatbelt would beep like it’s not on until you tapped the buckle was driving me mad so connected to vcds to disable seat belt alarm and noticed the airbag deployed in red, now this cannot be cleared ( I’ve tried) once the airbag is deployed apparently, it’s staying up/ ever time I scan the car and I think it said crash sensor activated aswell to get the code to go I think you have to change the ecu

I remember from previous comments here that many members here did not care if car was damaged before, but as long as it was HPI Clear it was all fine... For those who actually care few examples from our FB (https://www.facebook.com/vcheck.uk/) page, everything "HPI Clear":

I know that this thread is most likely dead, but I would like to share a story on this topic. My friend from Liverpool bought himself a Renault Megan off a marketplace, I forgot the name, never mind, on the photos it looked amazing and the price was very good, much cheaper than he thought it would cost. So he paid for it and signed the contract, and when the car arrived, it looked awful, the bumper was obliterated, the side mirror was broken too, and the left passenger door had a lot of bumps. In the end he wanted his money back, but because of some lines in the contract he couldn't do anything about it, so his one thousand pounds went down the drain. He decided to give it to a scrap car collection company called scrapi.com, at least they did their job for free and quickly.
Not a good car buying story, but this is completely different to what this thread is about, what happened to your friend was he bought a car without viewing it and was sold a badly looked after car - as the saying goes "there are no free lunches". I remember many years ago when I went looking for a first car for my wife, a reasonably priced Ford Fiesta 1.1 Ghia, only problem with the listed description was that it was yellow. Anyway while viewing many other similar aged Fiestas, we had a look at that one, every square inch of the bonnet and roof was peppered with stone chips that had by now started to rust "quite well", the tyres had all been done up with tyre paint so looked good apart from there being much in the way of tread on any of them, just a visible pattern, no gear stick knob or gaiter and the interior was being "re-conditioned" by a cleaner while we viewed it, ie glossing up all interior plastic parts - we walked but not before being laughed at by the sales guy who reckoned it was in good condition and could easily be tidied up! The next garage was similar, but this time great condition of car but no legal tyres, okay that could be sorted out but not without me having a trailer. So ended our search for used Fiestas at used car dealers, buying private was a lot easier and cheaper.
