Hello,

Just wondering if anyone could advise on how often the engine should be carbon cleaned. I have spent a good amount of money buying the car and so I do not have much more for any modifications.

The car goes well and feels faster than my 280bhp 303Ibft 1380kg Mazda 3 MPS (This subjective comparison at the very least shows that it is making more than 350bhp plus whatever torque that equates to).

The car has 90000miles but was mostly motorway commute. Now however, it is used mostly for short journeys with engine almost always not up to temperature (Max 7000rpm), with occasional blast on A/B roads/motorway.

Lastly, where is the best place to get it carbon cleaned in central Scotland, or anywhere in Scotland for that matter.

Cheers

I was thinking this. MRC tuning seems to be the place everyone talks about. I don't know if it's a job that can be done by any garage or not? I had mine done at 78k in October 2014 and when spoke to MRC last week they said it will probably need doing again I was shocked it's done about 20k in around 18 months

I run a vw Audi specialist so I have all the instructions and all the tools. I'm not one of these let's give it a go even though I have no clue lol

I presume you are down south?. My car goes well but I really don't like it when people assume it isnt fast or a standard B8 S4 is quicker because of carbon build-up. I would rather spend my spare cash on getting this done than other mods. I get the kick at just over 5000rpm.

I'm in the midlands sadly. I've never done it and last time cost nearly 2k

right guys im new ish on the forum and havent posted until now because im a busy lad, ive read alot into the lump and after the carbon clean if you dont fancy wasting a load of money again fit a seperate oil catch system that doesnt let oil vapour back into the inlet this will stop carbon build up from then on. my guy that does all the head work for me has dont it on his after finding out his inlet were thick with carbon build up then he set out to stop the problem and thats what he has found.

hope this helps people il be doing mine soon so il post a how to

Sounds good keep us posted if it works

In July I'm hopefully gonna be getting mine carbon cleaned and a re-map at VES Sport in Braco, just outside Crieff, the guy (Grant) writes a lot of the software for some of the tuning companies down south plus he has his own 4WD dyno. Mine has 108000 on it, I got it 2 yrs ago from a specialist in York with 89600 with FSH and have no idea when or if its been done before, he said that it had been done but couldn't give a date or mileage so I figured it won't do it any harm to get it done.

When are you looking at doing this? I had mine dynoed a few days ago and as I predicted, it made just over 350bhp, 364bhp to be precise. It does need a major service done though and I think I might carbon clean it as well and then dyno it again.

July...am going on holiday for two weeks so that gives Grant plenty time to sort it out...

In a word "No" as the Terracleaning machine basically takes the place of the fuel system on your car,on the FSI engine the fuel is injected directly into the cylinders and not via the inlet manifold. The carbon builds up on the inlet tracts and the valves due to oil vapour from the crankcase being re-directed through the inlet manifold to be re-burnt, the oil vapour starts to carbonize on the hot valves hence "Carbon build up" and as the fuel being injected be it through a terraclean machine or not is no where near the inlet tracts.....you get absolutely ZERO cleaning effect on FSI engines. Other engines might get a small benefit but personally I wouldn't entertain terracleaning, Carbon is one hard element and the only effective way to remove it is "physically" whether that be with crushed walnut shell blasting or otherwise.

I'm sure when I spoke to the guy who terracleaning my old passage he mentioned that there are 3 types of terracleaning, one of the others is an intake clean, I have absolutely no idea how it works however I shall give him a ring tomorrow to find out in the interest of collecting information. I also see that on a local distributors website, a lot of local b7 RS4'S are having it done, whether they know something I don't or if they are just doing it for the sake of it

Be sure to let me know how you get on m8, if there is an effective method out there that works on these engines then its news to me??... 99% of mechanics out there will tell you there is no easy cure to effectively get rid of Carbon build up on these engines...other than physically. I can appreciate that paying £500 upwards for a "carbon clean" may not be to everybody's liking or budget and they feel they want to go down the cheaper alternative route.

After a quick chat to my local terraclean outfit i have decided to book my rs4 in and give it a go. Im only going for the induction clean which comprises of an "induction fluid" being forced into the intake post MAF sensor, via compressed air. I am confident that being it is injected in with the air stream that it will contact the areas that suffer with carbon build up. However whether it will have any effect on the build up i have some doubts. That is why i booked it in, its the best way to find out. Im not sure whether my vehicle will have suffered from heavy carbon build up as it had a new intake manifold approximately 4 years ago. I will post my results as soon as it is done

Cancel it and save your money. I've tried hydrogencarbonclean - with dyno testing, and it did nothing. See vid I made below:

The only way to get an effective clean is to take the intake manifold off and scrape out or walnut blast off the buildup. See my comments in the vid.

Oh am i glad iv seen your reply, the terraclean machine decided to break and its booked in for next week, i shall cancel that appointment in the morning
Thank you

On the subject of decoking after a lot of resear h the only way to seem to remove it is to remove the inlet and manually clean it. So i have decided to book the car in with my local german specialist. They have given me an estimate of £800 inc VAT which i think is reasonable. For that they will remove the inlet and manually clean the inlet, runners and heads. I was going to travel to MRC tuning but being based in south wales its a hell of a drive. Its booke in woth a company y called DASTEK based in barry in south wales. Iv had work done by them in the past and are incredibly competant and the owner is a very friendly chap and incredibly knowledgable on anything german. I would rexommend thwm to anyone not willing to travel up north

Are you getting it on the Dyno before and after???? £800 is reasonable in comparison to what MRC might take, but its a bit steep in comparison to what I'm going to pay. I was quoted £750 for the full carbon clean and a re-map, so i'll have 3 runs on a dyno on top of that.. One as the car stands, one after the carbon clean and one after the carbon clean and re-map. (Will post the figures when I get them) At the end of the day all that matters is that the car gets done properly and that your happy with it.. Let me know how you get on m8.

Anything to do with DASTEK rolling roads ?

Sorry the companies name is DASTC my auto correct decided it wanted dastek haha. But no nothing to do with the rollers

That price is without dyno runs its literally just a clean, where did you get your quote from? The only reason i am willing to pay their prices is because they are local to me and the work they have performed on my vehicles in the past was first class

I did mine myself. Terraclean does nothing but loosed up all the carbon and turn it into a sticky gloop.

Heres mine before and after. Walnut shell is the only way to do it properly. I can do it for £600 all in.

Before

After

Jhm spacers added

Its a no brainer, especially when in some cases your talking a 100bhp loss in power.

We restored a customers RS4 from a shocking 299bhp to 402bhp. Now its the weapon it should be

My quote is from VES Sport in Braco, just outside Crieff...Central Scotland. The tracts and valves look minted after the clean. Glad I'm getting it done...can only be better for it.

Sorry im located in south wales, it would cost me the extra £15₩ in fuel to get up to scotland haha

Did you see any benefit from the jhm spacers craig and also where are you located?
Yes mate, mid range torque had improved in a big way. But also it has another kick @6k after the first 5k kick. The more you pound it, the better it responds.
Way i see it, anything that cleans without you physically seeing the results isnt cleaning it. Ill happily put the camera down any terracleaned Rs4 inlet manifold and show you how much you dont get for the money.
And if im wrong ill write a public appology.
But yeah the spacers are defo worth it
