Hi there.

As above, how would you tell the difference between the two.

The car is an 2004 Audi A3 2.0 TDI S-Line DSG.

Cheers

Will be a 140 as the 170 only came out within the last 12months as far as I am aware.

The 170 was first available in the UK in October 2006.

The exhaust on the 170 also comes straight out rather than the tailpipes facing down... someone correct me if I'm wrong though...

as others have said, the 170 has only been out for 18 months or so, also the 140 doesnt have a DPF - the one you're looking at is a 140

plus oil cap is over to the left on 170 and in centre on 140

This is correct - straight out with stainless/chrome ends.

That should be a 140 if its not remapped

Do they have different coloured TDI lettering like the golfs? Is it a case that the more red letters in TDI the more power? Red I, Red DI, Red TDI?

What about the gearboxes? 5 speed, 6 speed?

Nad they don't have the red badges like the Golf, also all 140's came with 6 speeders, only the 1.9 came with the 5 speeder.

Did a lookup on one of those registration lookup sites:

Make: AUDI
Model: A3
Description: SPORT TDI AUTO
Engine Capacity(cc): 1968
Year Manufactured: 2004
CO2 Emissions (g/Km): 150

What extra information does that give us?

I've found a 140 on ebay with 150 carbons too. (http://cgi.ebay.nl/2004-AUDI-A3-DIE...52152538QQihZ004QQcategoryZ9835QQcmdZViewItem)

Looks like it is a 140 (unless it has been chipped) and he's trying to pass it off as higher.

If you can look at the service book or the sticker under the flooring in the luggage area it will show the output as the first item on the fourth line - 125KW it's a 170 and 103KW it's a 140. Also at the beginning of the next line down will be a three letter engine code. Tell us that code and we will be able to to tell for for certain which type of engine it is.
