How do you guys launch?

It just doesnt launch hard, standard clutch is useless, you can't turn the traction completely off and its too FWD biased. My old escort cossie would launch of the limiter albeit with a paddle clutch but would spin up a little bit then grip and go, change to 2nd gear was the worst ever but it got off the mark well. My skyline is in a different league, that laucnhes off the limiter with a bit of slip on the clutch (hks tripple plate) to bring the boost up and would be pretty much untouchable by anything else i've come up against (in the real world), gear changes are perfect and i must admit the S3 isn't bad on that front, but its more like a grippy FWD imo

I think its a liberty having a quattro badge in it though lol

I know. When I had a tyre puncture in one of my rear tyres I got 2 new ones from my local tyre garage. The guy in there was giving me all this spiel about needing to buy 4 new tyre because the car is 4 wheel drive.

I told him that it was a quattro and that it was prodominantly FWD and the rears took over when needed. He laughed at me and told me that they are 60% rear 40% front. I nearly swung for him! My guess is that he was thinking of the original quattro from the 80s.

I assume you're changing to a uprated clutch at the same time?

tufftybloke runs a standard clutch with his 380bhp beast

I don't want to remove the duel mass flywheel so if there is any other uprated clutch out there that i can use then please post a link

That's a pretty damn good description of it really. All the predictability of a FWD car but with the added grip from a 4X4 :racer:

The S3 is no where near as predictable as my old A3, if anything that's the only real thing I dislike about the car, sometimes I don't know where I am with the haldex, especially in the wet...

As for launching I to can't comment about other 4 wheel drive cars but I can't see what's difficult about launching an S3. I think its awesome how you can launch from standstill in the wet or the dry, if it's wet and you turn the esp off you can provoke a little 4 wheel spin in the wet before it grips and bolts you forwards...

in fairness to the maker the S3 was designed to be an all round package for the average person who could afford the new asking price.... we the enthusiasts are largely the minority for what Audi had in mind - hence why the haldex system will do for most road applications for the average person that is likely to afford this car.... i agree it isnt as predictable but it is far more useable in anything but perfect conditions.... thats why i cant see me changing for a long time yet unless its into an 8P model :)

Yup I agree, my S3 is going no where for quite a long time I reckon, even now I'll walk back to it and think... That is one damn sexy looking motor :)

Cheers for the couple of comments guys. Any more info about launching though and when to change gears?

Appreciated

Jay

yup in fairness you can talk all day long about when etc etc, when your lining up for the straight and launching from what ever RPM..... you'll not be looking at the counter ;) ...once you have the start right, the rest will slot in

I tell yer thats exactly what I went through tbh & if I'm honest I wish I'd kept the old girl, might even buy one again, lol.

So... is there planned to be a ring trip then??
As for launching my s3... Ive seen far too many hold their car at 5k+ on the line then dump the clutch just to hear lots os slipping and a terible smell woft up to the grandstand.
Ive fitted a sasch power clutch but still get the car rolling before giving it the full beans. Ive tried one almost sidestep on the clutch but the risk of damage played off against the "better launch "isnt worth it realy
