Hottest Day ... and air con on the Blink

Cars out in the sun , cabin roasting
ignition ON , Dash clears to OK
engine starts all looks fine

Then, no cabin vent fans running , the RED-Led
temp and fan display is missing ...
then starts flickering , eventually fault
clears .. stable led light + fan speed bar
.. climate control , appears to run
normally

Standard fault ? corroded fuse ?
harness plug ? { fuse number ? }

Ideas ? Tnx

Have you scanned for faults by any chance?

was ok in the morning and ok once it stopped flashing
no warning lamps , only have torque app

im assuming its connection in the power side , must be fuse for it ?
number ?

Same happened to me lol working in the morning but not in the afternoon although think mine is a leak still have not got around to fixing it yet! you need vcds lite at a minimum for a decent diagnosis

has to be the supply , the whole thing was out , leds , and fans ... something did'ent like being baked
is there a list of fuses anywhere ???

Another hot day another set of faults ,

now the top pixels of the dash info display have dulled ...
and the driver door , closed indication , is stuck showing door open
electrics have heat stroke ..

But the air con is working fine and the engine's running really
well after ditching the shiny recirculate valve for a genuine Audi
plastic one

have a look at the large fuses in the engine bay mine had corroded badly cleaned them off my scratching them up to make a better contact and the a/c came back to life.

I have my S3 air con (or is it climate control!) on low/automatic for a really long time and just never gets that cold.
I once took it to quick fit to check it. He put his hand near the bellowing vents and said it seems ok to him, granted it was just slightly 'cooler" than normal at that time.
When you then compare it against the air condition in my wife's 20 year old Ford Fiesta 1.2 Zetec that is blooming freezing cold air coming out after a short while having it on in this heat. Even when i took it for an MOT last yer the mechanic mentioned blimey mate, you got a freezer there.

Someone once said to me you will never get it that cold in the S3 - its climate controlled ! simply cold would be a good start.

Are most of you happy with the temp in your car on a hot day?

When my was working it was freezing cold (A3 8l) when you turn it manually to low, I also have climate control by the way. Presumably all the gas levels are correct and your car is not throwing any fault codes.

Sure ... The s3 is cool car -) ,

The air con needs to be periodically re-gassed , if its empty or leaking, then, the system will not
achieve a low temperature , the small fan should run when is selected as well

Not all places 'do air con' I took mine to ATS last time, connected to the purge 'device' ran the auto leak test and
re gas , fixed £ charge, working fine

If its never been checked over the years , then , that's the first step

While the display flickered and flashed , the radio worked normally
from the fuse allocation - circuit list , the supply fuse is common

connector to air con control panel ..may be

fuse 5 but also lists fuse 15 , with same e87 [ e87 = circuit ref ?]

7.5

E87 - Operating and display unit for Climatronic air conditioning system

E45 - Cruise control system switch
E94 - Heated driver seat regulator
E95 - Heated front passenger seat regulator
E159 - Fresh air and air recirculation flap switch
E221 - Operating unit in steering wheel1)
F269 - Temperature flap position switch
G65 - High pressure sender
J293 - Radiator fan control unit
J401 - Navigation system with CD drive control unit
J402 - Navigation operating electronics control unit
J446 - Parking aid control unit
J453 - Multifunction steering wheel control unit
R - Radio
Y7 - Automatic anti-dazzle interior mirror

also fuse 15 [ my is manual - so may be fuse 5 is relevant ?]

5

E87 - Operating and display unit for Climatronic air conditioning system
G85 - Steering angle sender
J217 - Automatic gearbox control unit
J285 - Control unit in dash panel insert

yes , only down side , the radio worked normally during the event , which indicates , 5 was actually holding ...
so , as its close to the radio and fed from the same line ....

Q harness connector to the air con panel , is this a push on or has a retaining clip ?

..and how to get the panel out ?

The aircon in my s3 works perfectly its lovely and cold on these hot days

OK, so from everyone's comments there must be something wrong. I think the Kwik fit person was simply not bothered to do any work that day!

I will take it elsewhere and get it checked.

the fans are all working as i can hear them kicking in/working. if anything slightly on the noiser side, but then again not sure if that is just from a 18 year old !

From what I remember , its a 3 step process , de-gas - leak test - re-charge the system
had a automated test stand, just connect up two hoses to the access points
took about 30 mins may be longer

Is that what Halfords supposed to do?

I used ats euromaster close by , can just top the system up , but, the gas slowly escapes , leaves the oil behind, so, topping up ,is just quick fix , using the service 'stand' after extracting the old oil/gas, run a vac test , if its holding vac, then proceed to re-charge
if leaks , those need sorting first ,

luckily there are garden shed's full of bits of broken s3's so odd parts
and pipe's should be available ..must be a water trap in line as well ..
the new charge is by weight .I presume the extracted gas is recycled ,
2 years is the suggested service interval ..probably cheaper mid winter
the climate control , will attempt to profile the cabin temp changes
so it may not , simply 'chuck snow and ice out the vents , running it
at 'low was the final check ATS did ,

I would definitely go to ATS rather than kwik fit or halfrauds...
