holes in bottom of door

Hi,I have a b6 cabrio and while cleaning the inner bottom of the doors noticed two penny piece size holes one each end of the door,they look like access holes for bottom of window mechanism,should these have some kind of grommet to seal them or are they left open for a reason.? Both doors are the same. Thanks in advance

I have an avant and have holes too. They are drains so when water passes the window seal it escapes the door and runs off the sills
