    Hi Guys,

im new to the site have an audi s3 2002 51 plate with a bam engine and need some help.

    my issue:
cylinder 3 has no compression and i need to get it sorted..my current engine is a BAM engine, however i have a 210 AMK engine can i use parts of that engine to fix my problem?

are they similar? i have been told i just need the bottom end from the engine. is this correct and can i use the 1 from the AMK engine?

would really appreciate any information i can get.

Hi, You first need to work out why there is no compression on cylinder 3. This would then determine what the best course of action is. If a valve has dropped the head and block could both be scrap, in which case you will just put the AMK engine in.

Hi so I will find out tomorrow what the cause is.. But can I replace the complete 210 AMK block into my s3? Will it make any difference to whatever has been done to the engine as slot of work was done before I brought it.

From our very Knowledgeable expert @<tuffty/> there is little difference between the AMK and BAM that should concern you. So pretty much it appears that you could just swap the engines over.
When you say it's had a lot of work does that include rods and stuff. As if the engine is mapped with a bigger turbo etc just swapping the engines over and putting in a block with standard rods may not be a good idea.
How much power/ torque does the engine make.

So the car just had the following done to it..this was done at vag tech in milton keynes:
    Breather tube
    Round seal
    Breather pipe housing
    Breather valve
    Breather pipe
    Pressure relief valve
    Vacuum pipe
    Hard vacuum pipe
    Spark plugs
    And sump was changed.

It's been revo mapped so don't know what it's actually pushing.

The head has also been skimmed less than 40k miles,
    water pump
    Gasket set
    Head bolt set
    Exhaust valve
    Chain gasket.

The BAM engine is broken and had all that work done to it I have an AMK Engine sitting there that I could use instead of rebuilding the BAM

Might explain the issue with the BAM... depends if they used a genuine valve or not... I have seen motor factor valves fail...

Could also still be a rod but until you take it apart you are not really going to know

Tbh I don't really want to spend so much money opening it up and rebuilding it if I can just swap the block to the AMK ENGINE I have from my other s3 I broke. It'll save me alot of time and money.

But the issue might only be the head? Then you can swap the AMK head onto the BAM without removing the engine?
Why was so much work done to the BAM engine? Including 1 exhaust valve? There are 12 - why was 1 replaced?

My partners seat dropped a valve and the garage only replaced the 1 in it. I did question it and they said it was to save money as the others looked fine.
Also could have been that because the AA where paying for the work they will only fix what's broke which in this case was 1 valve. Just my opinion on a case i know could be a completely different story for audi_a3.

Exactly the point Tuffty made -something has been changed, so potentially has failed again for the same reason, or failed because it was not fitted correctly or is not a good part.

Choosing a "cheaper" option of replacing a whole engine may be more expensive than discovering the issue, and only fixing the broken bit. What's an engine change? 25 hours labour ~ £500? A head can be removed in what 3-4 hours. (Mine didn't but I'm rubbish 95% was in 3 hours - 1 manifold to Turbo bolt was 5 hours and 8 expensive drill bits )
