Help with iPod setup

Just got myself a 2011 A3 Sportback and discovered it has an iPod connector in the glove box. This is great as I have an old iPod Classic that works with it. The setup is kinda stupid though. The interface with the standard radio sucks.

If I got an iPod cable extender (like this) that runs from the glove box connector, would I be able to control the playback using the iPod, or can you only control the music via the radio? Would be great to use the iPod and click through songs rather than rely on the radio.

What are my other options? I've seen cables on eBay/Amazon (like this) that seem to connect to the back of the radio and work. Anyone have any experience with these?

Want to avoid using the AUX and cigarette lighter/USB setup as the cable jumble annoys me.

mainly you can hook up the connects2 boxes witch emulate the cd changer and got aux usb sd card inputs, ipod should work in both ways if its original setup, otherwise can be just aux to ipod interface.
