I've an oil leak on the passenger side rear driveshaft where it connects to the rear Diff. Anway I've removed the six allen key bolts and now stuck - can't prise driveshaft of to get to oil seal.... do I really need to remove exhaust, driveshaft etc ? I was hoping to prise it sideways to get to the oil seal. Any thoughts much appreciated Roger

To be honest its probably not leaking that bad and if it is an real pain to disassemble i might just reconnect the driveshaft and just top it up now and then ??? seems a shame now i have a new oil seal in my hand.

Apparently a tiny leak is quite normal for the rear diff, or so I have read. Nothing to worry about unless it starts pi**ing out. Can anyone confirm this?

I can't comment as to the technical side of it, however, when i was told that mine was leaking and needed to be changed by Audi, i questioned it as there were know signs in my garage that it was leaking. I seeked independant advice by ringing a friend who's an Audi specialist and he said as there is know signs of leaking on the garage floor then it is probably sweating. This was back in March and i've had no problems with it. Hope that gives a bit of help... just probably sweating, maybe?!

soupie did his and posted it on here a while back

Craigs S4 was leaking and the MOT tester pointed it out, we had the diff fill plug out and it took about half a litre of oil to get it back up to the full point!

mine leaks too,was like that 10k ago when i bought it. i probably should top it up.

So the general thought is "don't fix what isn't faulty" looks like i'll reconnect the driveshaft get a refund on the oil seal and pump in some fully synthetic 75W90... think thats the same as the audi gear oil (quattro diff ??).... maybe attack again when something really serious happend in the back diff area. cheers Rog

depends how much your losing and how quickly.

Fill it up, run it for a few weeks and recheck.

and ye i used 75w90 stuff in Craigs.
