Hi Everyone,

Just some time ago I tried starting our MY2005 2.0T (BWA) and two things happened:

1. The engine started as usual but immediately followed by a screeching, almost coughing noise

2. At the same time, the engine oil pressure light came on

This all happened within 10 seconds and I switched off the engine immediately.

Question is what can it be? I'm too terrified to start the engine again (should I even?).

We've got home start so should I just have the car towed to a garage first thing tomorrow? Anything else I can check in the meantime?

Many thanks.

Red oil light is oil pressure chances are it's the oil pick up in the sump blocked.
Yellow light is oil level

Thanks. So it's straight to the garage then without attempting another start?

Yes if it's red, ask them to check the oil pick up first

Sounds more like the cam belt has snapped to me,.
Or the BWA engine was prone to cam follower failure, due to a doggy cam shaft that was revised and cars were then recalled and the swap done.
Check your your cam follower first, ifs its got a big hole in it? then is going to be a refurbished engine I`m afraid.

I'm rather illiterate on engine matters. How do I check the cam follower? Is it visible if I pop the bonnet?

Also, the car has full Audi history and paperwork for work done. Can't see any recall related doc. Maybe it was never recorded .

Thanks.

Click the red writing in the post i sent, its a video of how to check it, basically you have to remove engine cover, depressurize the fuel system and pull out the high pressure fuel pump where you will find a thimble where the fuel pump is controlled from the cam shaft for fueling the car.

Erm... a bit out of my league I'm afraid. Will hit the local Audi specialist tomorrow hopefully. For me it's Russell Automotive in north west London.

Update. Spoke to a few garages to see which one can have a look earliest. All advised to give it a start first. I did and NO warning! Engine started as usual and no funny noise. Phew!
Still plan a garage visit since it feels I might be on borrowed time.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Might have been the oil pick up pipe after all.
But if it has blocked then you will be starving the bottom end of the engine of oil so dont drive until you get it done.
Your a lucky lucky chap.
But you need to find out if the engine has had the update cam shaft and check that cam follower asap.
