Audi free dealer MOT noted a broken rear spring.... I laughed at the price... I'll do it myself... however after removing the bottom 19mm nut on the shock absorber I'm stuck, even with my coil compressors on I can't see a way of slippping broken spring of shock, is it normal to remove the shock absorber from the chassis, also any idea of the colours of the springs for a 2000 2.5 TDI V6 I see 'white pink pink' but the replacement spring I have is "white white pink pink" and may have an extr turn in it !

you have to take the bolt out at the top of the hub and the 3 bolts that hold the shock hsg etc to the car. it all comes out then you can remove the strut from the hsg.

HSG?

There are 4 bolts holding the upper shock mounting onto the car, you need to remove these and remove the shock assembly as a complete unit.

The spring comes off the top of the damper iirc.

Exactly the same happend to me, :( I think there are a few other people with broken springs as well!
I Did the rear springs/shox on mine last weekend, sheesh nice job....
If yours is an avant then there are 4 bolts holding the metal shoch stay to the body, you will need to get this off to remove the spring. See if you can get elsawin (audi repair manual) to help you out.. on (dis)assemby stuff. The Haynes manual only does 2wd and no quats :(
Some points, the job is easy enuf, all bolts were ok to undo though you may want to replace the bolts & nuts. The shock tower back may be rusty, The Pink/white markings are what you need to give audi - if you want the std springs, Euro car parts helped me no end as there are lots of types of shocks / springs.
If you need any info pm me I should be around this weekend, go some work to do on my web site so do not have time to sort a "how to" at the moment! :(
if its any consaltion, I had been running around with 2 broken springs! the back it a bit higher now. I put billies on mine as Audi said they were on back order on the OE's
Cheers
Michael

is the free mot still going? mines due soon, is a retest free on minor items

Thanks for all the tips - got the spring of in the end, my new Ebay spring has white white pink pink markings, its a high strength, as its got a towbar makes sense, I'm having troubles compressing it with just two coil compressors - any other tricks out there like using the weight of the car to compress ?

I had a broken spring on mine a while back, had it done at specialist, £175 seemed fair!
