Hello, I'm new to the VW family

Never thought about buying a VW Beetle until I test drove a 2001 1.8T.
After driving it I noticed that acceleraton was slightly surging but still had A SH*# load of POWER!!!!...Could this car have been "Re-curved" or "Chipped"?...How can I tell.

1.8t may not have the naturally aspirated power of a v6/v8 but they still have plenty of oomph
