Has Anybody Fitted the Wagner Evo 1 Intercooler?

Hey all,

Curious if anybody has fitted the Evo 1 yet?

http://www.wagner-tuning.com/produc...r-kit-evo1-audi-rs3-8v-ttrs-8s-200001107.html

Looks to be a nice sweet spot for those only seeking maybe 600 crank hp from these cars, and possibly not have to change crash bars etc, keeping the cars factory integrity there...

Also seems to be small enough with 57% volume increase that there will be zero mid range hit on power that some of the larger coolers experience and pressure drop is better than stock.

Stock Intercooler seems to be 8.3l volume. Wagner Evo 1 is 13.07l volume, and Evo 3 is 16.5l volume.

The APR Core is 14.7l it looks like which is about 77% more than stock. Cant find volume numbers on Iroz or STM.

I just wish they tested it in a reasonable ambient temp! 4C is useless information to me.

Would love to hear any real world feedback. Was the install painless, any crash bar mods needed? Even better some Dyno numbers of stock vs this one. A lot of other intercoolers are seeing up to 20-30hp increase.

More importantly in reasonable temps >20C are you seeing heatsoak with something like a stage 1 or Stage 2 car. I dont care about drag racing, I just want to absolutely avoid any heat soak on the streets and protect the engine when I eventually have a stage 2 500+ crank HP tune and mods.

i have the evo3....

Thanks :)

But I am really only interested in talking about the Evo1 here, the 3 is all I can find feedback on so far...

Installing that unit in my car in Australia will void any insurance in the case of an 'event' since there is no crash bar anymore.

Bump? Seriously not one person has gotten the Evo 1 on the facelift RS3?

I know the Evo 1 was meant to be absolute pants on the 8p RS3. But looking at specs that seems to be because last they only increased the volume by 10% or so.

This one is only 1lt away from the Apr cooler. But it does not have quite as much front facing surface area.

Get on to the TTRS & rs3 owners group Facebook page, I remember seeing owners selling Evo 1’s so I’d assume they’ve tried them

Just to clarify this particular Evo 1 is a newly released unit only a few months ago. The older Evo 1 is known to be rubbish.

I think ill go ahead and buy one and report back. I am fairly confident going from 8liter to 13liter is going to yield good results.

I'd be tempted to go the same route - even if you go stage 1 it'll definitely keep the power more consistent and should also give slightly more power at the same temperature levels compared to a stock intercooler.

It is of no help to you, but I have an Evo 1 waiting on the bench to be fitted - for no other reason that I have been a tad lazy of late!

Even when I do fit it, I am not sure I can feed much back regarding performance as I am currently mapped for E85 and might not notice it. But if comments coming out of Germany, where many owners are fitting the Evo1, are anything to go by it is all that is needed for anything up to 500bhp. So I do not think you are wasting your money if you go ahead.

Do you have obdeleven?

You know what would be HUGE help when you do fit it, if you did it on the same day for eg, pick a route near your home for a good 10 mins drive. Log the temps the car reaches with the IAT on that drive with the stock cooler, fit the new cooler, do the same drive and log again.

Hopefully the ambient will be only a few degrees different or the same a few hours later and you will get your answer there.

I am stage 1+ Unitronic.. I did a short general drive the other day on a 24C Day, and saw the temps going up to 50-56C on that drive. Interestingly when I got moving and got on the throttle (not to redline though) temps dropped to 46C.

Now, if I could get even 15C lower across the board than all of that with the EVO1 I would be pretty satisfied honestly.

Stage 2+ S3 8P now gone. Hello 2016 RS3 :)
How do you log temps on obd11. I have obd11 and clueless how to use it haha

Go into the engine module and hit live data, select Intake Air Temperature and you will see the temps there, there is also a log button top right when you are on that screen. But I just had a 2nd person in the car holding the phone looking at it and telling me how the temp was going as I drove... Was good enough for me.

If you believe Wagners own claims (and I doubt they would lie) then temps come down into the high 20's if I recall. It's very nearly as good. I would be keen to see some independent results, though.

Yeah the EVO1 looks to be about 4-5C difference from the Evo3 in cooling performance.

However, when Wagner tested both of them, ambient temps were 3-4C which is insanely cold for any useful data.

I would have liked to see 25C ambient when testing was done... But oh well.

I will definitely take the plunge on this cooler and report back, given I want to stay legal with regards to crash bar, its my only choice without needing to import a US crash bar, by the time I do that, I would be looking at a $2500 AUD FMIC vs this Evo1 which will only set me back $1300AUD landed. I think its worth the look. The difference in price savings there is pretty much almost a Downpipe...

Hi matey,

The EVO1 would be perfectly fine for a 500Hp setup.

The EVO3 could handle much more heat/HP, if you compare the measurements closely.
For example, looking at the data:
EVO1 --> Ambient 4,1°C --> Turbo Outlet --> 140°C --> AIT 27,7°C
EVO3 --> Ambient 4,6°C --> Turbo Outlet --> 150°C --> AIT 27,0°C

So the EVO3 had the same AIT by 10°C higher turbo outlet, with about 25g/s more airflow.

The surface area makes a big difference. If you are certain at stopping around the 500HP mark, then go for it. I know most people would start seeking more, hence the EVO3 is the popular choice.

The decision is will you be happy with 500Hp which is pretty easy to obtain on the FL .

Cheers.

Well I'm probably at ~500hp already with the uni tune.

I was aiming for 600 crank or thereabouts eventually. Still well below what a lot of these aftermarket units are supporting.

Simply put the Evo 3 is an illegal mod in Australia as you know...

I'll just buy one and test. For street driving even at 600 crank, I think it will be plenty to avoid heatsoak. The max I've seen right now this month with my RS3 in 25degree days while actually driving is 46C. Will see what happens on some hotter days.

Yeah I know what you mean. Staying legal Ur only options are - iroz, Apr, CTS with US crash bar.

600 crank will start to exceed the efficiency of the EVO1. Do it once do it right I say .

I think even Wagner won't recommend their EVO1 for your power output goals.

I reckon the Unitronic cooler which is in development will also need a US crash bar. That's the main target market, not us.. lol

I'm in the same boat as you mate. Staying legal and getting the optimum out of the bigger IC. Wagner is out of the question for me even the EVO1. Forge is the same which will be illegal for us.

Anyway, I'm sure you will sort it out.

I’m just ordering the bits to take my PFL to Revo Stage 2. I already have the intake, and have ordered the Milltek front pipe. I was ready to order the Forge cooler, but this has put a different slant on things. I wont be tuning any further than this, so the EVO1 could be perfect.

Awaiting feedback as well...

Don't get the evo1 for the PFL it's terrible. The evo1 for the PFL car is only an 8litre tank.

Yes. Is it good? Yes, it is designed and fits well. To the untrained eye, it looks little different to the stock ic. I bought it as I had a large credit with ebay that I had to spend quickly. In theory it should be adding something, but hard to say as I have other additions that would make it difficult to see the differences in bhp and/or torque.

That also looks good and presume bigger than the evo1. wonder if they do it in black? Any idea on costs and shipping to the uk?

When I checked I think it came in about £860 delivered.
I would need to spray it black though if I got one.
I liked the idea of how it fitted behind the crash bar and was quite a big cooler.

Well been looking at this again.
Just looking through ebay at Evo1 and airtec
The airtec comes with crash bar but says intercooler capacity is 7.97 litres!

The evo1 says stock intercooler is 8.3 litres and evo1 is 13.07 litres.
Anyone know anything about this?

Hi
I have the evo1 on my rs3.
Installation was straight forward and temp dropped some degree.
I was only able to compare at 14c ambient with unitronic stage 1+

Here is a 3rd gear pull over rpm

Here is a 4th gear pull over rpm

And here are both the 3rd and 4th gear pulls with some extra driving logged over time.

Cool - I think I might go for this intercooler whilst doing my stage 1 map. Really don't fancy an IC which requires a non-standard crash barrier.

I am going to buy the Wagner Evo 1 updated version as well. Looks like a good unit for what I need.

Just before I do, does anyone have one lying around that they don't want or need?

Slim chance I know.

Had mine on the car for just over a year now. Stage 1 FL running 505hp - perfect for the job and an easy install with no mods required.

Sorry for reviving this thread again but I’m looking to order this cooler for my pfl RS3 to go stage 2+. Well I’m buying the infinit performance one and I’ve been told that it is exactly the same design as the Evo1. Obviously I take it that it would more than suffice for my pfl when it’s sound on Fl at 500 and above.
