Halfords Mega-bright (+50%) headlight bulbs half price

Halfords are doing "2 for 1" on their mega-bright (+50% brighter) range of replacement headlight bulbs. Perfect for dark and rainy winter nights.

They got a rave review in a recent Auto Express comparison test and, at that price, they're as cheap if not cheaper than you can get any similar bulbs from anywhere else including eBay....

I've just fitted a pair of H4 bulbs (£14.99 for the two) to my wife's car and they're really good.

I'd already paid to swap my original bulbs for a pair of "Osram Silverstars" a couple of years ago and they're definately brighter than those (and they were meant to be +50% and got rave reviews then.....)

Headlight bulbs do get dimmer over time. If you're running ordinary Halogen headlights, do yourself a favour and grab a bargain!
 
I would also really recommend you upgrade the sidelights as this makes a big differance in turning the look of the lights into white, instead of white mains and yellow sides
 
Not sure how they compare to the Osrams Silverstars but I just fit some H1's in that I picked up off of Ebay for 12 squid and they are a huuuuuuuge improvement.

i was considering getting the HID kit but I dont think that will be necessary now!

I had Osram Silverstars in before.

There's probably not a lot of difference between the two when new, but the Osram's were about three years old and bulbs do dim slightly over time.

I did one bulb at a time and you could definately see a visible difference between the new "GE 60" Halfords bulb and the old Silverstar...
 
Well, within hours of reading this I blew a bulb, so thought I'd give them a try. Here's a pic of the new bulb fitted (on the left) and the old one, which was marked Osram (on the right).

I've no idea what the old bulbs were, but the Halford's one is a slight improvement.
 
Funnily enough,one of my headlight bulbs blew last night,so I went out and bought the BOGOF 50% brighter ones from Halfords too !

It was Osrams I had before.

I've just replaced both bulbs and will keep the good Osram as a spare.

I'll find out how the Halfords compare on my journey home.

As soon as I knew I'd popped a bulb,it was the first thing that popped into my head.
 
DO the sidelights really make a difference? What about fogs??? I am fed up with yellow looking lights.
 
The blue Philips sidelights I got free with the Osrams look smart,but it's a bit of a moot point as I never drive with sidelights only.
I only fitted them coz they were free.

Has anyone bothered fitting the Halfords bulbs to their main beam as well as dip ?

I haven't bothered yet,but I might at only £19.99 a pair.
 
Hi guys i was looking at these arlier in halfords as i'm fed up with the dull yellow lights on my A4. I have a question i'm hoping someone can answer. I have a 2004 A4 with projector style lights. It looks as though the main H4 bulbs are only used for full beam with dipped beam coming from the projectors. Is this right and if so can i upgrade the bulbs behind the projectors to something more powerful? How easy is it to get to the bulbs?

I have just looked at my ETKA parts catalogue and at all the different headlights fitted to a 2004 A4. It seems both the normal and the Xenon versions have an H7 bulb fitted rather than the H4 you mention. It would seem logical as the H4 is a twin filament bulb whereas the H7 is a single filament bulb. Seems little point in fitting a twin filament bulb and only using one filament. If you can get to see the back of bulb it's easy to check. The H4 bulb has 3 connector blades on the back of the bulb itself, whereas the H7 only has 2.
 
Could well well H7's rather than H4. I can't actually see the back of the bulbs as the unit is really crammed in. When i turn my dipped headlights on the only light is from the projector area rather than the 'main' bulb. The full beam performance isn't too bad it's the dipped beam that is awful and i'd like to improve.
 
Harking back to my 2003 A4,I'm pretty sure it's H7's all round,as with the A3.
So a single filament bulb per function ( 2 x dip / 2 x main )
So it would cost you £19.99 to change the dip bulbs.
Can't remember how easy or difficult a job it was to change them on the A4,sorry.
Only took a few minutes on my A3 this morning though.
Just as well,coz it's fecking baltic up here !
 
got 2 sets of ring artic white h7's in my headlights and there the best i've tried (and i've tried a lot as i work for motorworld :) ) not a bad price either
 
bowfer - I put my old Osram Silverstars out of my previous 156 into the H7 main beams on my A3 (cos with projector dipped beams, I didn't need them for the dip...). They certainly do the job, but I suspect there's not a lot in it and for the little time you actually use main beam, unless you end up with a spare pair from somewhere, its probably not worth buying them specially....
 
Last night was the first opportunity to try the Halfords' bulbs.
Definitely a whiter light than the Osrams,but they don't seem as bright.
I cleaned the headlights too,in case the three inches of winter muck was clouding the beam and my judgement !
They'll do fine though.
I note ebay has deals on bulbs that better the Halfords' BOGOF deal though,but I didn't have time to wait for postage.
The coppers look for an excuse to pull people at this time of year as it is,so I needed a high street replacement.

Out of curiosity,what would Audi have charged for an OE replacement bulb ?

Cool, I'll give them a shot, and I'll put the best ones in the dipped and worst in the fogs or main beam.

Bump...

ok after waxing lyrical about the PIAA bulbs one of them blew after just six months.
I went down to Halfords to pick up some of these 80% brighter bulbs only to be told that they werent that bright and I was better of getting the 30% brighter blueish ones anyway they are rubbish after the PIAAs and pretty yellow

Any "blue" bulbs have a coating on the bulb to produce the blue effect and that can only reduce the emitted light.
Looks like you got some duff advice at Halfords. If you want the brightest light output, never go for any colour-tinted bulbs....
 
The PIAA ones definitely have the edge. It'd be interesting to see a comparison of the Halfords 50% ones, Philips x-treme, and PIAA bulbs.

I ordered the x-treme 80% bulbs 4 weeks ago now and and am still waiting delivery...
 
You can get them for a bit under £50 a pair, so quite a lot more than the Halford's ones...

I've got the PIAA White Chrome and they are the dogs danglies! My gf bought them for me for my birthday present and they are quite expensive (about £75/pr) but they are definitely worth the money and (I think) the best bulbs you can get without going for the HID conversion!!

I don't rate the Philips Blue side bulbs as I've also got some of those and they are still yellow and don't look a crisp white colour.. Pants! Don't buy!

I was intersted in getting the LED sidelights, but I hear that they produce the bulb indicator to come up on the dash... Anyone done this???

PIAA bulbs are very bright but as I said mine blew after just six months :mad:
 
got the halfords in today....great improvement over standard...much whiter and brighter
 
I've just noticed an item in this weeks Auto Express that says the Japanese lighting specialist PIAA has just revamped its popular Xtreme White Plus range, making in tougher, while helping to reduce glare for other drivers. PIAA claims the bulbs, rated at 65/55 watts, deliver a light output equivalent to 110/100 watt lamps. Despite this increase in claimed performance, the bulbs are 'E' marked and are legal to use on UK roads. Prices start at around £45 for a pack of two and for further details see www.piaa.co.uk
 
cant believe how bright these halford bulbs are.....they light up all the road signs from miles away....either they're super bright or i've fitted them wrong
 
more headlight related bumpage...

thought I would try some of those "xenon gas" filled bulbs from Autobulbsdirect.... here they are although are whiter than the other bulbs I have tried, they hardly light up the road at all... the colour is very similar to the PIAA Xtreme whites, but the light output is no where near

BTW, I've just bought a set for the polo.... I had Bosch 80/100w efforts in it but one went pop so tried the halfrauds one in the other side, and I honextly couldnt tell the difference! So I'll fit the other hlfords one to the other sode so A: uses less power and B: it will actually be legal ;)
Gonna buy some for the A3 too me thinks....
 
Everywhere I've asked seems to be expecting new stocks in March. Though I'm half expecting them to be sold bfore they arrive. I bit the bullet and went to Halfrauds today for their +50% ones.
