Golf R v RS3

I had a back to the past moment today...........

I used to own a Golf 7.5 R, my son has a Golf 7R, it was stolen last easter, he got it back within a week with 3 wheels swapped for repo ones and the remaining genuine wheel badly aerosol painted silver, all 4 wheels very badly bent/curbed etc, it's taken so long to sort out due to a 'cheap' insurance company ducking and diving (another story)

So it's sat for nearly a year, needs brakes, battery, keys recoding etc, I got it all finished today and took it out for a pre MOT test to bed the brakes in etc, what an outstanding engine that EA888 is, just toddling around (trying not to draw too much attention) the response from under 2000rpm and the way the turbo spools up instantly and thrusts the car forward is so enjoyable after the laggy RS3, (of course the RS3 when 'on the boil' at the higher rpm is different again)
The whole car also tends to encourage hooliganism compared to the RS3 that Audi have made ‘sensible’ with it’s whisper quiet exhaust and safety first ‘Lane assist’ etc.

I do wonder whether I could have got to love a Mk8R.......................................

I am a big fan of the EA888 gen 3, we did have 2 at one time. I was looking for a 7.5R but having driven one for a while it was a bit too go-cart for me. I did look at the S3 but the problem I had with both was finding a high spec car as most were poverty spec lease specials.

For me I missed getting them new as I was sleeping as to what was on the way. I wanted dual injection and no OPF, in the 7.5R that is a short window, to get one in the colour, spec and condition I wanted would have been a long hunt. I was looking at the RS4 also but similar problems.

When an Ideal-spec RS3 cropped up it was a no-brainer. Six months ago I did see an ideal 7.5R for sale and did a double take but the DAZA RS3 suits me in so many ways it will be difficult to change. I grew up on 80s turbo cars so I'm used to a bit of lag and not found it a problem having re-leared some old skills.

Come to the conclusion the new ones (8R 8Y) don't do it for me even if I could buy one! Not a fan of the looks, I have always preferred a sleeper. Not a fan of how they work, I like buttons. I have driven Haldex so long I am used to it and for the short time I have driven the new diffs it did not feel natural or that predictable, felt like the back end was on a rug that someone was pulling. I would probably get used to it but for now Haldex is fine for me as I have other cars for sliding about the place.

I have always done well buying the last of a long run in a model, they have lasted well for me. First of anything tends to be glitchy and I tend to avoid unless there is a good reason.

Sold our Mk7 G'R' in January ready for the RS3 incoming this month, been driving a 106bhp A3 Cab (Summer car normally garaged in winter) after the best part of 10 weeks in this, the RS3 will seem like a rocket..... However!!! I honestly believe I may end up regretting the decision and venture back towards a Mk7.5 Golf, more than likely the TCR though. We had a MK8 'R' on loan Fr-Mon, did 300 miles in it and honestly after 10 I knew it wasn't for me.... Ive had every iteration from 4 - 7.5 (misses had a GTi in 2019) and was massively diasappointed not to want the Mk8.

I was so annoyed at VW when I drove the 8R, similar to Audi in some ways, the 8R has very early nanny mode intervention and with the total lack of press buttons/switches it is a PITA to find the ESC options (select car/swipe car/select brakes/select ESC mode/ confirm) but there is a 'favourites screen' which you would add it to.
My RS3 has never filled me with condidence especially when you are asking the Magna diff to do its stuff, it's almost as if it's too edgy, in my 2 afternoons wth VW Golf 8R it just inspires confidence, VW (imho) have made a better job of programming the magna diff controller than Audi, exits of corners can be totally commited to with a neutral balance to the car, and sometimes the slightest hint of oversteer but more like a 4 wheel drift tbh, it just eggs you on. Maybe Audi have done it on purpose so you dont drive it like a Tw*t ?

My gripe with the 8R is the awful seat pattern, the everything touch screen and what looks like a base line Golf inside (I know the RS3 isnt much better but it does have switches for climate/seat heat/Stop start etc)

This was short lived but was a fantastic car nonetheless.

I think 2017/2018 will be a high point in many petrol cars for some time to come. Exception being Porsche as it is a shame they never got the 4.0 flat six into the Cayman pre-opf.

My TTS had the same variant of the EA888 engine as the MK8 R vag stated 320 bhp but it felt more 330 plus bhp also the The 5 cylinder engine note is pumped in same as in the 8Y RS3 .....RS3 8Y only faster after the legal limits that trick rear diff same as G8R but scratchy high gloss black plastic dashboard huge disappointment probably a facelift G8R for me if they improve that Dashboard

Pretty sure the 8y is faster than the 8r 0-60, not just after legal limits. I’ve had an 8r performance pack and now an 8y so can say from lots of fun drives the 8y is quicker in any situation.

So when Audi offered me a test drive of the 8Y I was blown away by the additional performance. I’m coming up to 2000 miles in my 8y and it’s getting better every week. Throttle response is better, engine feels more free’d up, exhaust louder, along with getting used to the car’s ways. You won’t regret it.

Thats exactly what I thought...............
I only said to the wife last week (she reminded me ) 'I really like this car now'
And then I completed the work on my lads Golf7R and took it out to bed brakes prior MOT and realised just how slow the RS3 is to spool up, I guess thats why it changes down gears so much compared to the Golf
The main plus point with RS3 is it's residul value.

Which mode are you driving with? Dynamic and ESP Off is probably the best thing to get some oversteer, I've experienced it quite a few times already and always brings a smile.

Probably mostly with ESP still on to be honest, I tend to use the Comfort or Auto setting and go straight to an RS mode (usually Individual) when the need arises, I'll check and see what I have set in Individual, It just feels 'fidgety' sometimes, if it was an old pre ESP car you would think something was worn out on the rear suspension

I used manual modes for both my golf r’s and now rs3. Simultaniously holding the shift down paddle and burying the pedal seems to negate any lag lol

Not tried 20s but after driving a TTRS on std 19s I run that size on the 8v, 245/35 all round but on square 8.5" rims. Surprising improvement over the 255/30 front especially for a daily driven car. IMHO helps with weight transfer which is important in any car with the engine hanging out over either axle and after 2 years still not convinced staggered tyres are necessary on an alloy engine unless it lives on a track.

Sick of dealerships advertising cars in stock and when l phone up enquiring all av gotten in reply is "yeah we've just sold that car" I've tried for a polo Gti 3 different dealerships 5 different Ford dealerships even considering a Mini Cooper S premium plus but the Mrs doesn't like them gonna leave it till May when the trade takes a dip am off to Turkey for most of April so no need for a car
Oh but you can get a Polo gti with 200 miles on the clock easily with a APR of 11% never will do that

I had a customer in last week with Turkey Teeth.

To be fair they looked a lot better than some I’ve seen he paid 3.5K and they are warrantied for 10 years.

He recently chipped a side tooth and enquired at a NHS dentist about a repair, they wanted 3k, so he emailed the place in turkey and they said to him, just come back over we will fix under warranty £600 for stay in a 5 star hotel is all it cost him.

Wish my teeth cost £3500 .....Avril's did mines are £10k no free accommodation with my treatment Antalya put you up l went to Fethiye but it was through necessity mate not vanity

I bought a brand new unregistered polo gti in Sept 2022. It was quite a good spec with pano roof, camera, upgraded factory alloys etc. I couldn't get comfortable in it. It felt like I was sitting on it rather than in it if that makes sense. Even with the seats on the lowest setting, it just didn't feel right. I only kept it for about 2 months. Bought it from Vertu and went through carwow. I had been talking to Vertu directly and they only gave me about a £500 off but I got a few thousand off going through carwow for the exact same car I'd spoken to them directly about before carwow. They had a few in stock at the time that weren't advertised anywhere. I'd just emailed vertu on the off chance and they had some.
