Golf Mk4 V6 4Motion power steering.

Quick answer/response needed if you can please guys.

Powersteering intermittent failure on Mk4 V6 4Motion Golf. Sudden loss of powersteering whilst on the move. The funny thing is, if you rev the car to highish revs, say 4.5k+, then the powersteering comes back!

Anyone experienced this problem or know what could be wrong? First instinct is the powersteering pump, or possible knackered steering rack, but I'd like some opinions before suggesting these parts to the owner.

my mum had an issue on her old golf - It'd sat idle for a while as she'd bought a new car, when we went to clean it up to sell it, the power steering was intermittent - A guy i know told me to spray WD40 on a belt in the right hand corner, that sorted it for a couple of days, but we had to have it replaced in the end - Though it was only £50ish.
