Golf computer not working

The DIS on my sisters golf gti is not functioning and there is a beep every 30 seconds. All fuses in place - any ideas?

she hasn't turned it off by accident has she?

there's a button under the stalk that turns the display off, press it once quickly to turn it back on, failing that i've not heard of the display dying in such terminal fashion
