Hi all. I’ve got a 2.0tdi 170 engine code bmn

This morning the glow plug started flashing on my car, and it went into limp home mode

Then after half an hour the dpf light came on

When I got to work I did a quick scan and the following codes came up
P0299
P1116
P0130

Any clues on how to rectify would be gratefully appreciated

Thanks

sounds like the DPF could be blocking up causing the other codes to appear (o2 sensor codes etc...)

Could try getting it terra-cleaned?

well some people claim it's snake oil, but I have heard of it fixing similar issues of blocked DPF's

Your dash display lights suggest a DPF blockage issue. Those error codes are generic and possibly a bit ambiguous but as they relate to turbo boost and exhaust sensor issues, they may be relate to restricted exhaust flow because of the DPF problem. Ideally you need to get the car plugged into more specific VAG error checking software such as VCDS so that you can, for example, check how full your DPF actually is and whether there are other sensor issues.

I’ve had it plugged into vcds at a vag specialist and the mechanic there said that it needs a new lambda sensor, that’s why it’s not regenerating

I’ve got one today to fit to it, is there anything I need to reset after I have fit it?

The dpf light went out last night on my way home

ahh that's good if it was just that then

I would take it for a good long m'way run and I would drop down to like 5th gear for a bit to generate the extra heat required to do a dpf regen

Update, I have fit the lambda sensor today, and the car runs a lot better, much better on fuel, and no longer has the slight miss around 2200rpm that it had

Thanks for all the help

What sensor did you change pre or post cat? I’m wondering if my issues are caused by the same issue, also have a PD170

There’s only one lambda sensor on my 170pd

Easy to change,

Under the bonnet right at the back of the engine, on the top, towards the drivers side. There’s a couple of other sensors in there also which are temperature sensors, the lambda sensor sticks out a lot, the old one has a grey cable, but my new one had a black one, runs along the fire wall and into a plug on the n/s

When I removed my old one it was heavily carboned up, got a new one from tps for about £170 tho I did get quoted £60 from euro crap parts

Ok thanks very much fingers crossed mines is the same.

I have exactly the same issue, at least i think its the same, I have the 170 PD engine and also causes a slight miss at 2200 revs.

Been to audi and they were ****** useless. Ended having my manifold changed but still has the same problem. Perhaps I should consider changing the sensor.

I also got my glow plug flashing on my dash but its only intermittent. i got error code for inlet manifold control regulator.

Does this sound like I also need a new lamb sensor?

I had the limp mode on and the DPF light on with the flashing glow plug light flashing light the EML came on on the occasion with the lambda fault. Is ur car a bit smokey mine was terrible and smelled awful when I read the DPF to see how much carbon build up there was it read 3.96g which is quite bad. Changed the sensor and went for a drive and boom codes cleared and driving great. I think it could be well worth changing it’s only £55 from eurocar parts.

Thanks Ewan,

I have noticed a lot of very smelly fumes when standing stationary at traffic lights which actually make me feel sick! I have to use the air recirculation mode to avoid getting the fumes in the car! Could this be a sign of a full DPF?

I have VCDS cable, how do you read how full the DPF is? I haven't got any lights on dash regarding the DPF - does that mean my problem is related to something else?

Thanks for your help!

I am unsure my friend used a snap on code reader to tell me. I have never used the VCDS. Have u trued a passive regen by driving it at around 2k rpm for around 20-30 mins if tht won’t work it’s a good sign the lambda isn’t reading correctly and not allowing the DPF to regen. I also had issues with starting in the mornings now it’s all sorted. Hope this helps.

Yes I have been doing that like crazy for the last couple of weeks. driving on motorway in 3rd gear doing like 5000 revs. My missus did not like me for doing it but i told her i had too lol....didnt make any difference to the engine. I do also have problems with cold start! Sounds like I'm having identical problems to what you had! So might be worth changing out the lambda sensor. is it easy to do? what tools do you need?

Ul need a deep 22mm socket( if u do not have a lambda tool). I cut the cable off after ensuring the sensor I had was correct lol. It unscrewed pretty easily. Located at back of engine close to bulk head, find turbo and move to your left Ul see it sticking up the multi clip is over to the right behind the battery box. Just follow the cable. It took 20 mins if tht to fit. I used a 22mm spanner to tighten it up because of the cable on the new one wouldn’t allow the socket to fit. It doesn’t have to be massively tight just a good nip up. Hope this helps bud.

When it’s changed go for a drive leave mrs at home lol. Ul notice the lights will go out and floor it watch the cloud form in the mirror.

Hehe, i like the sound of that, the more I read into the more I can convince myself that this is the problem.

tbh I can't believe i haven't thought about this before. I have taken it to various garage and no mechanic has ever even thought about changing this. Not even the audi garage. Does the Lambda sensor control the fuel/air mixture also?

Does it have an error code if it is covered in soot or does it not always show this?

i.e. could it be misbehaving without an error code?

Iv had an error code a few times but it seems to fly under the radar when I took my lambda out it was covered in soot. It does help with the fuel mixture but I’m unsure if it’s solely responsible for the mix but my car smells so much better lol

is there a video/picture of where i can find this sensor. ( i have limited experience with these things)

Does the Lambda sensor control the fuel/air mixture also?

Yes, that's one of their main functions - check the exhaust gasses to make sure the fuel is being burnt efficiently and will add/reduce the air-fule ratio to run as optimal as possible

Ah cool, thats what I thought. How much would it cost to get this replaced in the garage? I would do it myself if I had a guide with pictures..

ermmm I wouldn't like to say - they would probs charge you an hours labor for a 10 mins job

I haven't done it myself to this car (did on my Golf) and you need a deep 22mm socket if memory serves? Believe the location for the sensor is roughly the top back of the engine bay

There you go, it’ll be easier to remove with a socket as they get corroded in due to the heat

U can get proper sockets to remove them

Easy job to do tho, literally 10-15mins

Thanks for the video upload!

Would the lambda sensor come up as a error code with VCDS if clogged with soot?

I got this error code over and over again. Had the Intake manifold replaced and still get it! anyone know what the cause if it could be...

The symptoms the car has is occasional rough running (any gear/time of day) and horrible disgusting fumes under the bonnet..
