Ghost immobiliser

PM'd with instructions - although from the response Sean got it sounds like an install issue on the car I saw.

Quite possible that they picked the power source up from the wrong location hence cause of the bypass.

I believe Autowatch give instructions though on exactly where to tap into.

I would like to try on mine please...

I still think it is a sales tactic, or lack of understanding though, as I said, some systems are set up to let the car start, but you could not put it in gear or drive without the engine dying.
Mine is like this, starts with no button press just won't engage a gear so can't be driven away.

Did they start the car and engage a gear though with no button press?

Can’t you set it up in valet mode, then as soon as the car gets up to 30mph it activates the disable feature and stops the car from restarting with alarms going off and lights flashing etc.

I personally prefer the clifford! Proxy sensors glass break tilt and motion and anti hijack

Hi mate, your right but on the next start up the car needs the code.
Plus you would need to know the valet code first.

True they could have done that too which would look like it started with no key press.

Quite like the mobile app feature with this too. Anyone on here use that feature?

I've email SAS for more info.

Not for me as someone only needs to nick the phone and they can take the car? Pressing some buttons becomes part of the start up procedure after a while anyway imho eg ignition on, press buttons, stop / start off, ESC off, scroll modes to dynamic :screamcat:

That's only if the app is running though, once the car has started or you've finished your journey you close the app down?

That's my understanding of how it worked but I could be wrong.

Someone could intercept the signal very easily with the app open and just relay it, similar to how they can with standard car keys. Or piggyback your home wifi to open the app themselves. I would steer clear of the app. As TX said, it all becomes so natural just keying in a code each time it doesn't seem like any further effort than pressing start :)

Very true. Think I'll avoid the app

You should. The whole idea of the ghost is a manual security solution, by creating a bypass with a wireless connection you’re going back to risks of advanced key, interception.

The code becomes very automatic as has been said before, it’s there to do a job.

I would.

It’s very easy to enter the 20 button sequence.

Lol, I’d never get anywhere if it was 20. Keep the mileage down I suppose

I was looking to get Ghost installed recently and called in at a local vehicle alarm and auto elec specialist - they showed me that Ghost is really easy to bypass - I won't post how on here, but it took about 10 seconds for them to demo to me. Needless to say I'm not getting it installed - I'm going for Clifford Blackjax instead - similar immobiliser/anti hijack device, but seems like much harder to get around.
bulls..t

I use 20 then if threatened for them say I can’t quite remember them all.

After 10 goes they’ll soon get fed up.

Was on Facebook a while back and every auto electrician are fitting the ghost, but when u checked with autowatch for an installer In my area only one was recommended and not the few other unregulated ones. From past experience with Clifford and toad alarms, the person installing it is quite crucial. I remember back in the day, had an internal Clifford motorbike siren in the interior of the car making it an unbearable place to be if it went off.

Do these devices affect / reduce insurance premiums ?

On the SAS website it’s listed in the Thatcham approved category but read elsewhere that it wasn’t.

Do they hell, my insurance doesn’t recognise it but they see the extended leather pack as being an interior modification.

Some of you may know me and some may not but I’m owner of Safe & Sound Vehicle Systems Ltd in Leeds or sasmobile, as some know it. I’m the biggest dealer of the Autowatch Ghost in the North of England and as such I’ve done many installations for members of various forums including this one and I’m also the guy who ran the group buy on VWROC last year.

I was made aware of this thread by a couple of different customers who I have installed ghost for and thought I would come here to try put a few rumours to bed and set the record straight about the ghost and hopefully help people get a better understanding of the product.

I’ve worked with the Ghost since it’s launch back in January 2016 and as such I now have well over 500 installations under my belt with many attempted thefts prevented. The Ghost is a very clever bit of kit but it does work different on various vehicles. The two ways it Immobilises is either what we call Engine Lock, which prevents the engine from starting and running altogether or, Gearbox lock where it will allow the starting of the engine but any attempt to engage gear will be prevented and/or stall the engine.
Most VAG cars other than the late 2017 onwards automatics with the electronic gear selector will all be installed utilising the Engine Lock option.
BMW can be installed with either option, as can Mercedes, Mitsubishi and others.

The video or the RS/S5 where the vehicle starts after a few attempts simply comes down to incorrect installation. To be clear this will happen if the device is not installed to the correct CAN network.
I do not have any conclusive evidence but it is believed that the video is the workings of a disgruntled ex Ghost dealer who was struck off by Autowatch due to poor fitment of the device. The comments on the video were turned off shortly after I tried to contact him volunteering to rectify the fault. He also became abusive to Autowatch staff when they contacted him. Now I’m no rocket scientist but had I spent £399.00 on a device to protect my £50,000 car then I’d be going straight back, accepting all the help I could get and have it rectified.

In relation to the bypass on the BMW there are a couple of things. Firstly it could be incorrect fitment of which the installer needs to rectify.
Secondly (which is what I believe it is) it could well be staged and or not have been fully tested in the “bypass” for immobilisation. The Ghost arms the moment it is connected to power and will not disarm until the PIN is entered. Let’s say at the very worst that the ghost allows the BMW in question to start, that’s cool. But as soon as drive gear is selected the engine would cut out. Once the ghost is tripped on BMW engine lock activates primarily as oppose to gearbox lock. This can be seen in the BMW M3 demonstration on my YouTube channel.

Basically these so called bypasses are not true, nor have I found any evidence from those who have said and say otherwise. If there was conclusive evidence of work a round on the Ghost then both Autowatch and myself would be aware of it and I would be very busy rectifying the issues for customers.

I’m perplexed as to why a lot of these negative comments about the ghost always appear to be circulating. I can’t help but feel many of them come from dealers who prefer to push other products such as the Clifford Black Jax as that seems to be the nearest rival of the Ghost. I won’t comment on the Clifford system but what I will say is no two customers are the same.
Everyone’s thoughts about, and approaches to vehicle security are different so you have to do what you feel is right to protect your vehicle. I always advise customers to go with whatever system helps them sleep at night, there’s no right or wrong product.

There’s a lot of internet hysteria, fabricated stories, tales of “on my mates car” and Chinese whisper type scenarios out there but if you really want to know how a Ghost would work on your car and what the quirks might be then please feel free to call me and I’ll explain what’s what. I’d much prefer to spend 5 minutes on the phone giving you an understanding of the ghost as oppose to letting you base your conclusion on sceptical comments off the internet. I won’t try and push the product on you, as that’s not how I work, if it’s the right product for you then the product will sell its self.

One last thing. The retail price of the Ghost is £399.00 and all dealers are under contract with Autowatch to sell at £399.00 and no less. This is the reason the Group buy I was running on VWROC was closed. Please be sceptical of companies selling it for less. It seems to be a good indication of little experience with the product and attempt to secure the work in order for training.

Installation generally takes between 1 to 2 hours so if a company tells you they need your car for the day or half a day this could well be because they’re using your vehicle to train on. They’ll be trained by Autowatch on it so don’t panic too much but it could also be that that’s just how they run their diary and prefer to not have customers hanging around. Before choosing your installer please look for genuine reviews and speak to people who have used the same company.

The device is only as good as the installer.

Welcome along Mark

As you have said it’s whatever suits the individual.....

I think the biggest issue is, people see the cut out option after a B/J equipped car has been driven away as some sort of ‘safety’ from the wake up with 2/3 thugs demanding the start up combo from them, however for me personally the reason I like the ghost is the fact that even with the keys it can’t be taken, yes they could come back to try for the code and I accept that risk because it’s like all these things, you just gotta make it as hard as possible for them.

Morning,

Average cost is about £180.00 to £210 but check with your nearest installer as prices will obviously vary.

Thank you.

Apologies, It has been a manic one and I thought I had!

I did not try the work around, but my car had the system installed under the supervision of Autowatch, and this was one of the things they tried to demonstrate correct installation, I am confident this work around will NOT work on my car.

Hi Guys, I just thought I'd post a reply after having spoken again the the alarm place where I saw this 'workaround' on a BMW... they confirmed the problem shown to me was because of incorrect fitting/installation on further investigation, and that they have seen this a few times with different systems, not just ghost.

This just confirms that if you're getting any security device fitted it is important to find a good / reputable / experienced installer.
