Gearbox problems with my S3 can anyone help please

Driving home last night and had a couple of problems with my gearbox. Seems to be stuck in 3rd gear

had a look when I got it home, got the gear lever free and cables seem fine was changing through all gears,mechanism on top of box moves fine but internally seems to be in 3rd (hope this makes sense) will not go into neutral neither

Then it hit 5th and gear lever stuck again so after browsing through the posts last night it seems to point to the selector fork on the 3rd gear come off rivet or broken don't want to mess any more and guessing its gearbox off time. As it now seems to be stuck either in 5th or maybe still in 3rd and trying to select 5th as well


So if any one can shed some light on best way to remove gearbox and what is involved in fixing it I would be grateful and any advice most welcome

Will I be best getting a manual from eBay or is there one anyone could help me out by sending me the relevant bits gearbox removal/refit and strip down to fix offending part(s)

also if any of you guys have attempted this before and have any advice which could help I would appreciate it as I will be attempting this on the drive at home with basic tools jacks etc.

sorry for the long post but am hoping I can fix it as the labour alone from a garage would cripple me as clutch was changed only about 8000 miles ago and I realise a garage would want to change everything & the costs add up and if I do it myself will probably be a good time to change the top mounts and anti roll bar bushes

Selector fork has broken mate sorry to say... fairly common fault sadly...

Taking on a gear box strip is not for the feint hearted to be fair... specialist tools required for most of it but not had a chance to do one myself as yet... good luck... and I know where there is another box should you get to that point...

It sounds like fork selector, this went on mine. I'll be honest, having a Quattro is probably the hardest part of the job, it is so tight around the gearbox area. My selector went with no warning, got in my car to move it and I just could not get it in to gear, once I did it was horrible to drive. I popped it back on the drive and didn't move it until I had to strip the box. Agreed the job really is not for the feint hearted. I summed up the possibility of getting a second hand box but after I read a few posts on the internet I really couldn't be sure that the same problem wouldn't happen again so I decided my only option was to carry out the work myself and replace the fork. From memory the parts are about £60, I may be wrong but they're definitely no more. The only specialist tool you will definitely need is the gearbox drain tool. I did the job with all other tools I currently had.

i say basic tools but really mean no Audi Specific tooling I am happy to attempt it but after looking on the net it seems quite involved so am considering a used box and stripping mine at my leisure to keep as a spare drain plug keys etc are not a problem and I am sure I will be able to do it, I will order a manual of the bay so i know the torque settings etc and hope for a change in the weather as it will all be done outside and its a bit cold at the moment.
It certainly helps knowing someone has done his before, just did not want to start it and hen find out it needs lots of Audi specific tools etc
