Hi guys every now and again I get a warning light coming up for the gearbox saying limited function. It’s maybe happened 3/4 times since I’ve had it, always goes off and stays off next time I turn it off etc, but this morning it did it and wouldn’t change out of 2nd gear??

Am I just doing something wrong (this is my first auto)

This morning I pulled up at the mother In laws back road and it’s up hill and you can’t turn round at the top when cars are there so I reveresed up hill did that trip any safety feature? Come to think if it I think it’s always reverse related do you have to be fully stopped maybe I’m being too keen changing to reverse when it’s slightly rolling?

Any ideas people?

I'd just try it again on the same road, but making sure to stop fully while changing gears and see what happens.
Cheers,
Dave

I would take it straight to a gearbox specialist if I was you.

Did you get any warranty from where you bought it???

Has it been 30 days yet???

If it was me, I’d email the dealer today to put this in writing within the 30 day period mentioned above. If it’s reported within a certain time of buying the car, any issues will be deemed as pre-existing under the Sales Of Goods Act and the dealer would have to fix the issue. However the quicker you report the issue, the more likely it is that they’ll take responsibility for fixing it.

You can still try the test that Dave mentioned above, but at least get the email in to register it first, in case you need evidence that the issues occurred within the first month.

If you got the car from a dealer, then you would be mad to take it to some and pay the money yourself. Repairs to automatic gearboxes will be a minimum of 4 figures, and the selling dealer could blame your mate for damaging the box and refuse to pay out. Inform the garage and let them pay the bill.

Oh God, yeah. I was going to say about covering the VIN, but I never spotted that the name & address was on there. Good spot, Dave.

What a noob how do I even edit a post

If the pics have served their purpose, you could just delete them. There should be an edit button underneath your post.

I tried engaging reverse before fully coming to a stop today. No problems or messages at all, so yours could be an underlying issue. Mine’s the tiptronic gearbox though, not sure what yours is & whether they could be different.

I went on the web version and reported them think they have been deleted? I don’t have any edit buttons on my posts,

Mines s tronic mate, il see what my obd tells me and give my mate a ring

No leave them so the garage has somewhere to start with diagnostics

Sorry if I missed which year your car is, but there is a problem on the earlier (pre 2014-ish) DSG gearboxes, where the mechatronic unit that switches between the two halves of the gearbox... the error on the dash is the "limited functionality" one that you describe and the symptoms are that when switching from one side to the other, the gearbox will click/clunk and then only let you use one side.

Most common version of this fault is that you are stuck with 1,3,5,7 and have to switch the car off and restart to access to 2,4,6,R... the slightly less common version is the reverse of this after it tries to switch to 3rd, it fails and is then stuck in 2,4,6 and R is still available, but 1,3,5,7 aren't. In rare circumstances no gears are selectable or in extreme cases, the whole drivetrain locks up - I know a few people who've had the more common versions of this issue and the only evidence I have on the latter is the recall of S4's and S5's in the US due to cars locking up on freeways and Audi being threatened with lawsuits.

If it is going to happen, apparently this normally happens ~5yrs / 60k miles, but mine was on <8000 miles, 3 days past the 3yr warranty when it went. Full Audi service history, fully up to date, etc.

Apparently the re-designed mechatronic part is ~£100, but it was a £1500+ gearbox rebuild to fit it. I didn't see that side of the bill though - my local dealership didn't even make me go to the shake-down desks where they usually make you buy your car back from them in instalments of £1.50 per 100ml of screenwash, etc... but they just came out to meet me, handed me all the paperwork and receipts with "£0 outstanding" at the bottom, apologised for the inconvenience and refunded me the insurance fee on the courtesy car.

Best of luck!

Mine was constant once it started - it just clunked every time it tried 2nd gear... so was pretty undriveable as I have to reverse into my drive (so had to switch the car off in the middle of a busy road, sometimes multiple times!).

One thing that did help: keeping it in sport mode allowed it to rev out each gear, so I was already at an acceptable level of torque when it went from 1 to 3 and 3 to 5.... but only in the sense that the car was driveable... not a long term solution at all!
