There i was driving normally the other day...when suddenly it was as if 1st and 2nd just dropped out of the gearbox.....strangest thing!!
thought it could be the linkages, but after taking it to an audi specialist, it looks like the internals of the gearbox..possible the linkage fork within! Happened to anyone before??
so after seeing a few people i know who are audi specialists, they've quoted as follows:

£300 Labour
£400 New gearbox internals
+
Clutch (not sure whether to go for uprated clutch) £150 - £200

Can anyone advise me any further?

possibly look on ebay or a salvage yard for a 2nd hand gearbox with low miles on it? might save you a bit of money and there must have been a reason for 1st and 2nd to get shunted, so perhaps a complete box change is a better idea?

go for an uprated clutch, for the sake of the extra £20-30 its gonna cost you for it, might aswell whilst ur having it done.

This sort of thing happended to me about 2 years ago.

Driving along and suddenly V. loud grinding noise, turned out ine of the diff gears had come loose and eaten through the gearbox casing.

2nd hand gearbox (58K on it) = £400.
Fitting = £400.
New clutch = £150.

Yup, I had the internal explode on me on the M42 about 2 months ago, I found a replacement gearbox on ebay and paid something like £300 for it, required a new clutch around £160 and new release bearing £40ish, labour was £225 after a bit of haggling, and all fixed in around 8 days. My car feels better than ever now, gearchange is excellent and clutch peddle is a lot lighter... so I think my old items were on the way out having covered a mere 52k miles.

I'm noticing quite a few of the gearbox woes and snapped cambelts(before they were due), is it an age thing?

My clutch is a bit heavy, does that mean it could be on its way out? or do S3's usually have quite a heavy clutch?

I think all S3s have heavy clutches. Both mine were / are.

I disagree, my S3 with a new clutch and release bearing is pretty light.

My clutch is nice and light...

To reply to the original post, I would say it depends how far you want to or can afford to take it. If you're looking for performance increases then HPA do a longer gear set for the O2M gearbox. Not sure on the price though.

Hi

The exact same thing happened to me in my S3 i lost 1st and 2nd gear just like that no noise, i had to have a new gearbox fitted costed me just under a grand for a new gearbox and labour, also the same thing happened to my mates S3 few months after! both S3s were 2001s with about 60k on the clock, must be a common fault?

Yep me to, 61k on the clock an 01 S3.
Just driving along and had no 3rd, changed down into 2nd and nothing. Gear stick just went round in circles. Ended up being the selecter drop fork thingy into the gearbox. Got another from a 18k gearbox and swapped it all over at a local specialist's garage.total cost 650.I'm still on the same clutch though.
