Gearbox Malfunction No Reverse

Looking for advice. I have a 2014 S5 which hasn’t yet done 36000 miles. I got an error Gearbox Malfunction No Reverse you can continue to drive. I called The AA and they ran diagnostics and got unknown error and advised to take straight to Audi. I did and they have had the car now since 31 December to advise on Monday that I needed a new Gearbox and that Audi would contribute 50% towards the cost even though the car is out of warranty and the cost of my contribution would be £5,456 inc VAT.

I asked for more information and they advise, “The car was presented to us with gearbox faults and driveability issues. The electronic diagnosis of the car showed fault codes P2841 ( Gear actuator 4 implausible) and P173D (Distance sensor 4 implausible), Audi technical suggest that as both fault codes are present, this is an internal failure of the gearbox and their recommendations is to replace the transmission.”

What’s the advice you are looking for Jennifer?

Sounds like your 5yo car has developed a terminal fault which is an extortionate £10k + to replace.
Only advice I can offer is to take it to or speak to an independent Audi Centre to see what they say.

I’m wondering what those codes mean in laymans terms. How have the faults developed? What is the cause of such a failure? Does age of car versus mileage have significance? Should a car with such low mileage be developing this issue? Has anyone else experienced this and if so how was it dealt with. Is Audi’s offer to pay 50% an admission that the car was manufactured with a faulty part? Has anyone had a better result from Audi and how did there scenario play out? Should I get legal advice? Should this issue be a recall by Audi?

Sorry to hear your troubles, can’t help with the codes I’m afraid. Search gearbox malfunction on the forum and you will find a lot of posts on this.

At least Audi are offering to pay half even though you are out of warranty I suppose. But £11k full cost seems very high given that mine was quoted at around £6k!

I fully understand where you are coming from and you'd expect it to last a lot longer both on miles and years, but with the car being 6 years old and basically 3 years out of warranty I think you have been lucky that they are offering to pay anything at all towards it! I assume it's got full history?

As suggested above talk to an Audi specialist, they may be able to help more. Aud main dealerships just have the attitude of "It's broke, replace everything". I had my last service done by a specialist, a guy in there was quoted over £1,000 by Audi for a new tubo, the specialist stripped it down and fixed it for about £170!

Main dealership aren't proper old fashioned mechanics that get their hands dirty and fix things, they just take parts off and put new ones on!

it’s so frustrating when cars fail but they do.
I had my steering rack fail on my previous Audi albeit 7 year old and 120,000 plus miles but the price difference between Audi and the specialist was significant.
I would suggest you’ll get no further with Audi so would get done pricing from independents to compare them make your decision.

Keep pushing with Audi uk or the dealer to raise their contribution that's my advice! As I have had the exact same experience on previous Audis in fact one of my Audis were out of warranty and I kept on rejecting their contribution offer. At that mileage if it's an stronic gearbox it should of reached or be near its first service.
