My car has started making a faint knocking. It sounds mettalic between 1k-3k revs but then goes. Doesn't do it on idle or in 5th or 6th strangely.

I've just had it checked out and they've said suspected layshaft and not dmf. Now, is this common? Its just turned 100k.

Also, how can I find my gearbox code? Its a 2006 car.

The synchros, selector forks and bearings are all wear items, especially on remapped cars, and the transfer case is also known to fail.

Mine whined like a dog in 2nd and 5th,prior to it's rebuild.

Yep taken mine to a specialist who has confirmed the worst. Get it back Friday hopefully. Mines mapped and has been for a few years

What did he say?

They suspect its the layshaft bearing and has the exact symptoms. They also said they've done a fair few of them and quite a common problem.

At least you have an answer.

The rebuild on mine(new selectors, synchros and bearings) was under £800 which I thought was reasonable, considering how it's behaved since.

Yeah it sounds like mine will be similar. I could get a second hand box but would rather do it once and right.

Well it was the layshaft and some gear damage. Complete rebuild was required and I am now a fair bit lighter in the wallet..lol

Luckily the clutch and DMF were both in good condition and looked to have been changed at some point.

Mine was rebuilt with uprated bearings and seems to have done the job as it's running a lot more torque over around 20000 miles and isn't whining.
