fuel gauge not working properly

afternoon all
sorry if this has been posted before but my fuel gauge and mileage left readout is playing up.
it has been stuck on full even though ive used half a tank and now saying empty for awhile before shooting back up to full when the car is switched off/on.
everything else on the dash speedo etc is working.
doing my head in!
can anyone tell me what it is please, i need this sorting out
