I have a 2004 a3 2.0 tdi auto with 160000 on the clock, just had both drive shafts replaced and now it's developed a rotating grinding noise from the front end.
I've taken it to the local garage he couldn't find what was causing it, but I've since noticed it seems worse at higher revs and if I drop it down a gear it get worse so don't think it could be anything with the recent work I've had done. Any idea what it could be?

The driveshaft are maybe the tripodic type, maybe the bearing cage had become dislodged to a degree when fitting, were they new shafts?

No its not a quarto and yes new drive shafts only started when I had the o/s drive shaft done

Tbh I would say it's possibly a fitment issue, bearing or bearing cage if it's the tripodic type.

I thought that until I dropped it from 4th to 3rd and the rotating rubbing sound got faster.
