Folding mirrors retrofit

Hello
Just to make it clear what I am asking, has anyone tried this type of switch in an 8V?
Folding mirror ebay 8p switch
To my mind the only thing that's missing is the position for 'off' and I don't think you need that anyway, unless I am missing something??
IS the O position 'auto'
If this works there will be no need to change the armrest along with all the disturbance that will cause.

That won’t work as on the 8v the symbols are on the armrest trim not the switch and there’s no holes for those symbols to poke through.
Don’t think that switch is the same shape either. Will confirm later with the bits I have in my garage.

Hi thanks for the input - on my car a 2017 8V S3 saloon the holes are definitely in the armrest and there is a 'mask' which goes in-between the switch and the arm rest with the symbols on them, there are different masks, I have even considered adding the extra holes which also would save swapping out the armrest, (but leave an extra 'blank' hole)
This raises another question - The backlighting for the symbols is inside the switch, does anyone know what the difference in part code is between a switch with red led backlighting for the symbols is and a switch with white backlighting behind the symbols is? or is the backlighting all white and it's the mask colour which changes?

These are the part numbers for my 18 s3 sport back, not sure if they are the same as saloon.
8v0959565n switch with white backlighting
8v4959522b armrest trim with holes for the lighting from the switch.
If I remember right it was about £50-60 for the 2 delivered from Crewe Audi on here.

Great @AlS3BE thanks for looking, glad to see we are now singing off the same sheet.
There seem to be so many part N°'s for the same switch, weird
I have asked Tom at Crewe Audi for a price today but didn't have the N°'s, for that price it's not worth messing about with, in fact I think they want more second hand!!!

Yes I thought they were, this one says it is red:-

£58 for a used one !!
Definitely didn’t pay that much, remember switch and trim was pretty cheap, trim might have been something like £15-20 so the new switch is like £25-30. total was around £400 for 2 mirrors without caps, switch and trim. All brand new. Luckily didn’t need mirror modules as some have as thats another couple of hundred quid.
Maybe exchange rates have changed since brexit and everything is more expensive.

When you say "switch and trim" do you mean the mask which fits around the switch or the complete arm rest? and did you have much fun changing the armrest

Armrest trim on the door card. I’ve not fitted the trim yet, didn’t have the right tools at the time so just put the switch in. The symbols are wrong but the switch fits in place. Will get round to it hopefully next week now the kids are back at school.

Right, so the armrest is called the trim? so you have the new switch under the existing armrest like I was suggesting?

Think the armrest trim piece is officially called the bezel from Audi. Nothing like trying to confuse folk ordering parts.
Will have a look at the boxes in the garage next time I’m in there.

I have just placed my order with Crewe Audi for the following Items:-
8V0959565n switch with white backlighting £40.00
8V4959522b switch trim/grab handle £20.00
switch mask which I don't yet have the part N° for £4.50
There are charlatans charging more than this on ebay for second hand rubbish which they have mauled off a scrap/stolen car and they don't understand what they are selling, lesson learned here .................... I can do without the hassle

Did this swap today. Took like 2 hours to do the drivers side and about 20 minutes to do the other lol. Took me a minute to notice the cable wrapped behind the channel for the window (DUH)
To anyone asking about the armrest trim removal : you need to remove the t15 torx screws. There are also a few spots that are melted plastic that are holding it together. If you pull hard enough they will snap off. Or you could be smart and heat them up. Either way it doesnt affect how secure the arm is.

I did my folding mirrors last week, couple of things I found out which may help others and add to the accumulated knowledge :-
Firstly I used a dent 'sucker' to remove the glass, cost £3.00 and removed the glass a treat, without risking breaking the £40.00 + glass.
Mirror sucker

Secondly, I used a piece of cable attached to the old mirror connector and 'pulled it in' to the inside of thedoor when removing the old mirror, I simply attached the new connector to this cable and pulled it round the window track when installing the new mirror the cable had to follow the correct route then, all that was left then was to replace the two 'fir trees' and job was a good un.
Old connector removal 2 Inside the door
orange cable attached to old connector inside the door, cable routing

I removed the round plastic welded fixings with an 8mm spot weld removal drill and then replaced each one with spare self tappers previously swapped from inside the arch liners by drilling a 3mm hole in the center of each 'post' and then screwing in the 'big head' screws, this made a good job of fixing the arm rest back in place. I cut the 'flap fixing off with a small disk in a Dremmel and rewelded it with a soldering iron,. You do wonder why Audi fixed it in place with mixed fixings and did not either use all plastic welds or all screws, weird! Perhaps made in one place (country) and assembled in another.

Only thing I haven’t gotten to work is the mmi menu. The mirrors fold in on lock and unfold when starting the car. The switch works as well.
perhaps something is done differently in VCDS in my 2017.
I feel like I scored on these used mirrors. Going from heated manual fold to heated land auto dimming power folding. The glass price for these is astronomical.

I guess I was just looking in the wrong spot. Hadn’t considered it would be under locking.

Ever wondered what was inside a door ECU??
Door ecu inside

lots going on in there, this was a standard ECU that was bundled with my power fold mirrors, fortunately my existing ones were fine as this one had been butchered out of the car!!!!!! there wern't enough pins for the N° of cables in the mirror plugs and I doubt that the right software (firmware) is loaded.
nice ornament though!!! I always think PCB's look like small cities.
I am still tidying up after a busy few weeks!!

Evening

So, with the help of forum members I retrofitted powers folding mirrors to my FL 2019 S3 Sportback. I would say it was successful, but while everything seems to be working OK, when I run a fault code scan with VCDS, I get the following errors (they will not clear). Is this normal after the retrofit? Also, when you unlock the car should the mirrors open, or only when the ignition is turned on? Re the errors, I'm not convinced everything is coded correctly, as on the facelift the selections seemed to differ! Is there any way of checking the coding? Thanks very much.

No faults on mine.
mine is set to fold on lock with setting in MMI.
unfold only happens when ignition is on.
will have a look at my coding on mine next time I have a chance

Thanks so much.

I do not recall having this option

42 and 52 > Check Byte 6 > Bit 0-3 should be variant 5.

Nothing said Variant 5

001C82205E01000000001002 your scan
005D8220DE01040000001002 mine
My 52 coding from an old scan. It’s slightly different to yours
Some would be stuff like door lights, b&o, puddle lights etc but there’s one that’s power folding mirror.

Great, thanks.

Any suggestions as to how to approach this?

It would be a huge help if you could check what you have selected in 52 - byte 6 please, as I think you have a facelift too?
Really appreciate the time you and Alex are spending trying to help.

Cheers

I might be barking up the wrong tree, but perhaps this is the issue? This is what I have - I’ve not changed it.

Thanks

My coding is above. Byte 6 is 04.
I think it’s your byte 04 bit 5 is wrong.

Would leave that alone just now. Your 42 is error free. It’s your 52 that’s got error

Had a quick google. Byte 04 has a bit called powered mirrors or something like that. So it’s just a case of using vcds and selecting the correct bit then pick from drop down boxes. Depending on what you pick the value will change.

Thanks.

So, 52, Long Coding, Byte 4, then what do I select? Sorry, for the silly question.

Exit then ‘do it’.
can’t really think what term they used. Auto pilot when I’m using vcds.

Thanks, sorry, I didn’t word it well! Once I’m in byte 4, what so I change? Cheers

You should have drop downs or tick boxes. Vcds should have labels on most of the bits so it’s a case of selecting the correct one. One of the selection is powered mirrors.
there’s a way to use long coding and just typing it in as well.
its been a while since I’ve had to used vcds cause I have the old hex can cable which doesn’t support the newer cars. Have to borrow my mates newer cable or use obd11 now and not really had to do anything for ages.

Thanks again. I’ll take a fresh look tomorrow and report back. Cheers

Right, still no clearer I'm afraid.

I have made some changes, as the long code is similar to yours, but still the same error!

What other things have you changed in vcds in other modules other than the door ones?

Right, first of all thanks for your assistance!

To update, I reached out to Alex at VAG Car Coding (member who supports these forums), who very kindly connected remotely, and methodically reviewed everything and essentially found a selection I had made that wasn't necessary - hence message error. Alex checked everything for me, and even addressed something else that was bugging me!

I cannot recommend Alex enough, so if you need anything looked at professionally, he is your man!

And to top it off, he would not accept payment. Only after twisting his arm would he agree to choose a charity for me to send a donation to.

So, thanks very much to both members.

Until next time!

Alex is great to deal with. Another recommendation from me. :icon thumright:
