I've recently been having intermittent headlight issues where the car flags up a fault with the left headlight every time the car is started and it fails to light up until the lights are turned off and on again, and then it works and stays on.
I decided to run a fault scan to see if there was any pointers and got the following:

There are a few faults in there relating to a ground/earth issue so I'm hoping these are all related and can be resolved if I find the source of the issue, so any pointers would be appreciated.

Also, whilst sat in the car with the engine running after a 2 hour drive (engine very hot) I noticed smoke from the exhaust in my mirror. The smoke smelled like burning oil, so I stopped the engine and checked the dipstick, and whilst the oil was at the halfway mark (not a significant drop since the last check) I topped it up and started the engine again, this time no smoke!
I did notice the fault code relating to low fuel pressure and think it's been about 30k since the Cam follower was changed, so I've ordered a new one and will swap them over tomorrow (Amazon Prime is a god send!) but I wondered if this could be related to the oily smell in the smoke, or do I need to look for something else?

I know this is a long post, so thank you if you read it all and any replies are appreciated.

Swap bulbs, test, if stays that side then swap ballasts, if moves to other side with bulb swap them it's a bulb, if fault still there after bulb & ballast swap them try swapping headlights, if stays then it's wiring or module.

Could do headlight swap 1st I guess, maybe quicker to get more data.

That's great advice, i'll give that a go.
Is there an easy way to remove the lights, or does the bumper have to come off?

@Daveyonthemove , if you have to remove your lights could you do a step by step if you dont mind and have the time after bumper removal as i will need to do this come time so i can send mine on too Trups so he can upgrade them for me cheers

Unfortunately I didn't get your message until after I had put the bumper back on, and we had heavy rain as we were doing the job so we didn't really have the time to stop for photos etc.

If you can get the bumper off, then lights will be easy. There is a T25 on the top of the headlight which will be obvious, and two other T25 which are less obvious, but in holes at each end of the headlight. Have a torch handy to shine down into the hole and you should find the screws. The headlight will then slide out towards you and give you room to disconnect the wiring loom.

As for the issues above, We did remove the bumper today and fitted new headlight bulbs which I had planned for March/April with better weather but obviously these needed doing sooner. I also replaced a fog light surround that suffered a bit of damage at Christmas time when a pheasant diced himself by flying at it. The new bulbs fixed the intermittent light problem, so thankfully it wasn't a ballast or electrical fault.

We also checked all the earthing points and found one of them slight corroded, so we cleaned that up and applied copper grease to protect it.

Sadly the Cam Follower didn't arrive in time so that will have to be done in a day or two, but I will check the DV valve at the same time and change the air filter as the engine cover is off for the other jobs and it wasn't needed at the last service so it's a good time to do it.

Good to hear that you got the lights sorted.
I think I remember you are on stage 1, so thinking of the oil, are you using Millers Nanodrive 5w 40 or the recommended 5w 30?
At your mileage, the Millers would be a good option.
I run it in all 3 of our cars and on my wife’s TT it cleared up an oil consumption issue. On my Mk 4 GTi 1.8T, I might add a top up maybe once a year.
When you engine is super hot, the engine oil will be thin and so will find it easier to get past the piston rings and so you will smell it in the exhaust. The Millers is ideal to reduce this.
Regarding the fueling, have you changed the fuel filter as that can cause a restriction if it is really blocked? Get the latest with the 6.6 bar pressure capability.

Yes, you remember correctly, the car is Stage 1.
I do use Millers, I have used both that you mention and neither are any better or worse in terms of oil consumption, I tend to top up a litre or less between 10k service intervals. Not a consumption issue that i'm concerned about.
The fuel filter was changed when I collected the car 30k miles ago, so I do plan to change it again at the next service. Do you know the part number for the filter you suggested, I'll order one in advance.

After looking on AKS, here is the part number:

The fault that I assumed could be Cam follower related did clear after the earthing strap was cleaned up and greased, but I decided to check it anyway as I couldn't remember doing it in around 25-30k miles, although it has been checked at least twice in that time.
It was replaced last night and looked like this:
Rsz img 20200129 202442 01
Rsz img 20200129 202348

It had some mileage left in it, but the black coating is pretty much worn through.
Not bad for a stage 1 car on Millers oil, put's my mind at rest that they should be good for 20k miles safely.
