Hi all,

Just after some advice, my ESP and ABS lights are on. To start with it was intermittent, it would come on when I started the engine and after a minute or so they would go out but now they are on permanently.

I've had it plugged into a diagnostics, 2 fault codes come up.

290 - Wheel speed sensor, rear left - G46. Mechanical fault. Sporadic.

493 - ESP sensor unit. Defective.

Had anyone had experiences of both these? I'm guessing new wheel sensor and either rebuild or new ESP unit? Sounds expensive lol.

Cheers
Marc

ABS/speed sensor would be first choice, looking at around £40/£50 for a genuine item, otherwise non OEM parts can be found for around £15/£20 online.

Sounds like it could be perished and be be splitting into two pieces, starting to throw up the fault.

Thanks for replying. Would that be an easy replacement? Would I need any specialist tools?

Sorry for the late response, only recently got round to sorting the issue as I replaced my brake discs and pads at the same time. Replaced the electrical sensor and the fault was still apparent, spoke to 2 independent VW/Audi garages and both immediately said the fault was the wheel bearing, as the sensors use these for a pick-off. Wheel bearing was replaced (old one looked knackered on inspection) on Friday and had no problems since. Nice cheap fix.
