Hi

My uncle's car is not running right. He has 1.8t 2003

I ran VAGCOM and it has the following faults -

Control Module Part Number: 8E0 909 518 N
Component and/or Version: 1.8L R4/5VT 0002
Software Coding: 0011581
Work Shop Code: WSC 63351
5 Faults Found:
17700 - Map Controlled Engine Cooling Thermostat (F265): Open Circuit
P1292 - 004 - No Signal/Communication
17704 - Error in Mapped Cooling System (usually temp Sensor or Thermostat)
P1296 - 008 - Implausible Signal
16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too Low
P0102 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded - Intermittent
17511 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heating: B1 S1: Performance too Low
P1103 - 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
16523 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S2: Response too Slow

17700 keeps on coming back after I clear the codes.
Idle is a bit rough as well - rev needle bounces abit.

Also having the car heaters on HI is not hot when compared to my 1.9tdi. I assume this is related to the above codes?

Is the sensors/codes easy to fit (diy)?

Please help.

Thanks

sounds like the thermostat is stuck open. does the heater get hot if you leave the car standing with the engine running ? what temp is the engine when the car is being driven

Heat from the heater is mild when the car is standing.

Not sure what the engine temp is when the car is driven. I will ask him today.

How do I replace the thermostat?

Cheers

couldnt tell you on these cars tbh youd be better of gettin it done at a garage or failing that you could always buy a haines manual and av a go yourself

Car is going in for a sevice soon. Will see what they say.

Many thanks

The thermostat ones are common enough & not a major drama, think there's 2 temp sensors on the 1.8T so one can go down & all will function prefectly still. What you are showing thought is the MAF playing up which helps control things on the intake side as well as the lambda sensor which helps control things on the exhaust side. These will be the key to the rough running, get them changed and you should be smooth running again.
