EPC Light

Has anyone had this on at any point ?

Not sure if this is trying to protect my clutch.

The flashing orange car symbol ? I get this a lot pulling away in first three gears. No DTC fault code I check quite regularly in VCDS especially after any mods/installs.

No no it's on the dash.

EPC comes on the dash in yellow and cuts the power.

Once I pull over turn the car off and back on its disappeared.

Found this so need someone to check it out ha.

Well my map is the lower torque map recommended for manuals so could we be that but I had the same thing with a DTUK so makes me think it's a sensor or coil pack. I'm going to someone tomorrow who will plug it in and see if there are any faults etc. If not I'm going to try getting the light on then try again. Yeah I will get in touch with Revo but I really need to dyno the car but again the clutch will slip so it's going to be difficult to resolve until I get a clutch @RedS3Reilly

Hi I have apr stage 2 downpipe with decat for about a month now on my s3 and my epc light came on yesterday for the first time noticed loss of power pulled over stopped and restarted it went away and the car seems fine since do you think it could be something to worry about

Well I've had it with a DTUK fitted so I'm not sure if it's software related or part related.

I would certainly have it looked at one way or another @dennie

Are you manual or DSG ?

Wonder what the fault code will show ? A long shot but could this be spark plug related - are you on original plugs Mike ?

Yeah normal plugs @Rob2k68 but I've looked around on the net and there's various issues with the EPC coming on so could be something big or small.

I'm only on 6500 miles but I suppose it means nothing, if something goes it goes ha.

I initially thought it was clutch related but now that @dennie is having similar issues makes think it's something else.

It's when I'm around 4500rpm + but really giving it some that it comes on.

Yours is barely run in ;o)

Hope it's something straight forward and easily sorted - strande that it happened with the tuning box as well. Any upgraded coil packs available yet for the 8V ?

Do you have any other modifications @mike?

Plenty mate ha, I'm stage 2 with a few extra bit but I have not uprated my clutch yet.

I do as well @Rob2k68, that's why I'm thinking it may be a sensor or coil pack. Not sure if there's any upgraded coil packs but everyone else seem ok with standard ones.

If you need to replace the spark plugs for whatever reason I hear that the RS7 plugs are a decent upgrade and they run one step cooler too which is recommended when running a tune.

Nice one @Rob2k68 ive also seen that the R8 coils are an upgrade as well.

Hopefully I'll be able to shed some light on the issue tomorrow when I go to a friend for him to check it with his computer.

If it had not happened with the DTUK on then I'd of thought it was the Revo map as it's low torque and maybe not used as much.

16618/P0234/000564 - Boost Pressure Regulation: Limit Exceeded (Overboost Condition)
Possible Symptoms
  • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
  • Boost Pressure too high
  • Reduced Power Output
Possible Causes
  • Hoses incorrectly connected, disconnected, blocked or leaking
  • Boost Pressure Control Valve (N75) faulty
  • Boost Pressure Sensor (G31) faulty
  • Turbo Charger stuck/faulty
Possible Solutions
  • Check Charge Pressure Control System
    • Perform Output Test (to check the Turbo Charger)
    • Perform Basic Setting (to check the Charge Pressure Control)
    • Perform Pressure Test to locate Leaks
  • Check/Replace Boost Pressure Control Valve (N75)
  • Check/Replace Boost Pressure Sensor (G31)
  • Check/Replace Turbo Charger

The ECU is seeing an overboost condition and cutting power to protect the turbo. This may be due to some kind of hardware issue, you really need to take it back to the people who mapped it and get them to investigate. Could be the map needs a tweak to reduce boost a small amount at high RPM.

Sounds like some detective work Mike from that list above. Mine had a boost leak after having the IC fitted and the garage done a smoke test - never heard of it before but that may be the easiest route to track any leaks.

Possibly worth tracing back to all the joints to the CTS pipes too and where any sensor was removed and refitted to them check that they are fully home.

Your cars pretty new so should heave the H suffix turbo.

As suggested above maybe the map has got a bit confused with the different settings at various stages of install - maybe they can reinstall it and reset the logs ?

@Revo Steve-W any thoughts mate ?

Yeah @Rob2k68 im going to have a look around tomorrow as I'm on night shift so I'll have a bit of time.

Well I may be taking the Revo software off as there's a 30 day money back guarantee.

I'm may contact Revo tomorrow and see what there thoughts are. With a bit of luck @Revo Steve-W may be able to help.

Some dealers have seen issues with actuators causing this issue (they're known to be weak), other dealers have also seen an issue with the Quattro system not working correctly, making the cars only FWD sporadically and replicating the fault code you mention. Another thought, what DV and hardware have you got, if not standard DV or not recommended Revo HW then this again can cause problems too.

Revo software is tried, tested and proven, therefore once set up to suit will be perfect and not cause any issues on a healthy car. If it were to, then the fault would be on all S3's with the same ECU I.D and that is not the case.

I can be pretty confident there is a hardware/underlying issue somewhere causing the problem, however the performance software can sometimes emphasis an issue and the car will require diagnostic and data logging to find the issue.

You're welcome to send logs over to the technical department - eurosupport@revotechnik.com, however ultimately you need to be working with a VAG specialist/Revo dealer to locate the issue, as we cannot diagnose faults remotely.

Like you say above Mike, you had same fault with a Tuning box fitted too, so defiantly sounds like an underlying issue with hardware somewhere which is exaggerated once asking more of the component.
There's no point going back to stock, get a VAG specialist to sort the underlying issue, then I'd recommend an uprated clutch and the full torque file to make the most of the S3 or even going to Revo Stage 2, which will transform it even further.

Hope you get to the bottom of the issue soon and can start enjoying the car for how it should be.

Yes, hence I say that it would be good to get the clutch upgraded too once you've fixed the underlying issue, so you can run the higher torque file or even go to Stage 2 to make the most of your S3. Such a shame VAG fit the newer TSi cars with such weak clutches.

Ok so just got car back from tuner and I have the same fault code as Mike" turbo overboost " am going to leave it with them to investigate how's things going with you Mike any updates since you found the fault code

Scorpion cat less down pipe
Vwr 600 intake
Turbo technics inlet pipe u?

Funny enough I just got it dynoed last Friday and the epc light came on Sunday do you think that could have influenced it?

All three of us how very similar mods - only connection I can make and a complete stab in the dark on my part is that you both have cat less downpipes - both Scorpion ? - shouldn't make an ounce of difference I know. Worth checking the O2 sensor ?

Well I've got,
Forge carbon intake,
Forge induction pipe,
CTS inlet pipe,
CTS outlet,
CTS throttle pipe,
Wagner intercooler,
Scorpion decat.

If it was the O2 it wouldn't read overboost would it? @Rob2k68

I've had my Diverter valve apart today after cleaning my sensors and checking all the pipe work yesterday.

It seems that if I go through the gears from a low speed, say 20mph give or take a few mph when I'm hitting say 5000rpm in 5th it then flashes the EPC light and that's it. I have had it in 3rd once and 4th once but most is 5th. But when I'm on this private road doing motorway speeds and keeping it in a gear to red line I don't get it! to be honest I'm quite fed up of trying haha but its to much fun.

Would I create more boost when I'm flooring it and going through the gears from a low speed ?

Hmmm very puzzling mate - I'm just looking at what hardware differences there are and probably putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5 ! It's difficult to know what the 'black box' would do if a sensor was giving a false reading.

I don't have a DV, does @dennie ? Is it easy to remove just purely to eliminate it ?

LoL keep having fun trying to sort it -! I'm sure you will.
