Well Gents it looks like my car has had the dreaded oil pump failure :crying: I was driving home last night when the oil pressure light came on, followed very quickly by the engine now sounding like a tractor. My car has only done 54,000 miles and has a full main dealer service history last one being carried out at 45,000. Spoke to Stirling Audi today and they say they have no information regarding this being a problem on the 1.8T engine (funnily enough they said not on the 1.8T, implying it was happening on another engine!) Having found a few posts regarding this happening to other people I phoned my local VW dealer, they said quote "Its not an issue, but it is known, but were not changing them every day" the guy was very helpful tho. Engine still runs so he thinks I might need a new oil pump and cam followers IIRC.

I am going to try and take this through Audi and see if I get anywhere, not holding out too much hope tho. If this has happened to anyone on here any advice would be much appreciated. I will keep you all informed of how I get on.

Sorry to hear that mate. The same thing happened to a friend of mine, except his engine went all the way and spat it's insides out. He ended up forking out for a recon engine and a new turbo. I wouldn't drive it until you have the problem sorted otherwise you could end up in the same position.

Sorry dude.
Just out of curiosity is this a problem with S3's too?

Ouch, as Duane says, I completly ****** my Engine and turbo!
Lets hope you havnt the luck like mine!!!:crying:

Thanks guys,

Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Audi customer service are saying that they can only make a decision of "goodwill payment" based on the error codes the engine management will throw up when plugged in by the main dealer. After speaking to the main dealer they have said it will be £80 to plug it in, then £80/hour thereafter if any further investigation is required. To me im looking at £400 before I have even kicked a ball, even after this Audi will probably not be too keen to stump up any cash. Now Im thinking I will be better taking a car to an independant and using the £400 toward the cost of repairs. I would appreciate if anyone has got any info on these failures on all VW/Audi 1.8T's, as Im thinking of trying to build up a case against VW/Audi on this as it seems VW/Audi USA have given an unlimited mileage engine warranty on all 1.8Ts built between 1997-2004. Surely this is acknowledging there is a problem with this engine?

James- I have come across some cases of this on S3s while searching tinternet

J7USS, what was the mileage, service history etc on yours when it happened?

Dougie

Dougie, Mine was on 96'000 with Full Audi Service history (longlife) when it went snap, crackle and pop!!!

I ended getting a 2nd hand engine and turbo with 72,000 on the clock (reconditioned).

It took me 3weeks to find an Engine as mine is the AVJ and rare as ****. Ended getting it from Allaudi in Bristol.

Cost me over 3k with fitting etc but it had to be done. It was coming up to Xmas and I needed a car that moved assisted by an Engine and not by 4blokes pushin it around.

I read up all sorts of bit n bobs on the net about how this Oil Sludge is a common thing especially with the 1.8t engine, results in a Blocked Pick-up pipe and starves the engine of oil. I spoke to a few Americans who got lucky with Audi that stumped the Bill - Dont ask, Dont know how they managed that but over here you got Nooo chance with Audi.

I read allsorts of stuff on the net and spoke to Audi dealers and specialists and they were all mostly saying the same.

Audi Quoted me £4800 for a New Engine....Block:faint: ...by the time I worked it all out it came to nearly 9k and there was No way I was going with that option.

I found Stacks of engines at rel good prices with Lower miles than I bought but the fact that none of them were AVJ's, I stood no chance, I was told the engine had to be an AVJ else fitting another would have gave me no end of probs.

AllAudi Knew these engines were rare so they got away with charging that extra, Fcuka's. Engine was £1250 alone whereas all the other engines (AWD, AF Athis, Athat..etc) were £1000 with turbo included.

So Dougie, Hope you dont get the same Problem as me, Hopefully you got yours before its too late mate.

Anymore Questions/advice etc, just gis a shout because I feel sorry for you, I really do. Its not nice is it not knowing whether its going to be a bill for 100's or 1000's!!

:icon_thumright:

J7USS, appreciate that mate, thanks :icon_thumright:

Its pretty p1ss poor! Im trying to kick up **** as the car has only got 54,000 on the clock and it was serviced very recently. IMO 54,000 miles on a car that cost as much as these do when new is quite unnaceptable. I think I may post this on other VW sites as well just to try to get peoples details etc, you might see me on watchdog with Nicky Campbell and that fit bird!

Dougie

Yes Completely see your point there Doug,Good luck mate and Ill keep a look out for you on the ol'watchdog!!:)

Hi Mate,

Sorry to hear of your problems with this. I would agree, don't drive it until it's sorted.

I worried about this some time ago, and posted here before deciding to get it changed.

ETA it seems that the second PH link is piston rings, but nevertheless another 1.8T engine dropping a *******. :(

Been following thread carefully - some scary stuff there mate and I feel for you - your definately are stuck between a rock and a hard place - good luck

Thanks again lads, update so far, i finally got someone to phone me back from Audi customer services, it turns out the previous two girls I spoke to on the phone did not take a note of my mobile number to pass on so I could be phoned back! Anyway bloke that I spoke to was very helpful, he reitterated that they cannot do anything until the car has been to the main dealer, it will be trailered up there on friday and I will be putting them under strict instructions to do no more than plug the car into diagnostics and send their findings to Audi Uk, dont mind shelling out the 80 quid but I am not giving them an open cheque book to start looking inside the engine, I am only interested in the cause of the damage, not what damage has been caused. Made a point of telling them that I know Audi in the US have offered this unlimited mileage warranty and decreased the oil service interval to 5000 miles.

Will keep you all informed

Dougie

Ok guys I finally have an update for you all, (if your bothered!!). It looks like I have been lucky with regards to the damage caused by my mishap, the car has been diagnosed and Stirling Audi have "condemned" the oil pump and all asssociated breather hoses, no further damage to cams/crankshafts etc, so after much to-ing and fro-ing between Audi Uk CS and Stirling Audi the long and short of it is they have agreed to meet 40% of the cost of the repair so I will have to pay 470 pounds to get it fixed. Not a particularly great outcome as it is only around 200 pounds of parts, the original 859 pound bill was almost 500 pounds labour! :faint:

Out of the whole experience as usual its the dealers that dont come out of it smelling of roses, failure to phone back when they said they would, wrong information passed to myself, and from what I can gather failure to inform me after agreeing to do so with Audi customer services. There seems o have been a lack of dialogue between themselves and Audi CS and that failure being on their part.

Should have the car back on either monday or tuesday, but for me this is not the end of the situation, I have acrued a fair bit of info from the web and I am aiming to gather this together and put a case forward to Audi themselves, whether I get anything else from it other than satisfaction remains to be seen, but i am certainly going to let them know that I feel there is a major flaw in both the service schedule on this engine and the procedures they use when carrying out oil changes.

Gentlemen,

Exact same thing thing happened to me oil pressure light came on followed by engine sounding very 'tappety', had the sump cleaned out and the oil pump exchanged at a local garage but the 'tappety' sound has remained. Garage wants to replace engine, there must be something else I can do before I resort to this.

Help!

01 A4 1.8T:sadlike:

This sounds quite worrying, i've just bought a 2001 1.8T (163) A4 with 90k. Is this a common problem, or have only a few people experienced it? Should i be doing something to prevent it from happening to me??

Yes mate, Might be worth thinking about getting it in for a New Pick-up pipe and OilPump.. just to be on the safe side as this topic is popping up quite frequent so there is more people out there that are suffering the same problem.

Its piece of mind at the end of the day aint it. alot of the topics ive read all over the net are from the people with similar mileage to us.

Few hundred quid should do it.

this happened to my mates gti, vag trained he dropped the sump to sort a gasket leak and the oil pickup strainer was almost completely blocked , tried to clean it but hard baked on oil wouldn't shift got a new pick up and alls good now , car showed no problems before he dropped the sump , only 50-60 k on the clock as well , he said seen a few like this normally caused by people skipping oil changes he reckons

hi mate, i have read this thread with dread hoping that it doesn't happen to mine. i have a 2002 1.8t with 89k miles and it is going into Stirling Audi on friday to get a diagnostic check as well as a run by the technician due to loss in power - see previuos thread http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=49036 .

i am now considering getting them to replace the oil as well as the pipe, as the car was aledgedly serviced just before i got the car. with the luck i am having since i bought my machine, i'm expecting a big bill on friday night :sadlike:

if the worst happens, i'm going to look into trading the car in for another A4 - i have my eye on a 3.0 quattro - hopefully they are better?

Keep us posted mate

Hi lads,

Been a while since I have been on, guess I got a bit ****** off about the whoe Audi thing!
Im afraid my woes did not stop until I finally came out of Stirling Audi with my car. After they had told me the car would be ready for collection on the monday night I waited until 4pm to phone them as I have approx an hours drive to get there and had not heard from them, the receptionist told me that the car would not be ready today as they had made a mistake in pricing the time the job would take and that they had been "wheeling my car in and out of the workshop all day trying to get it done"! and that there was no guarantee that the car would be ready on the tuesday. I went ballistic and told her that the car WOULD be ready and that I was coming up at 3pm to pick it up. 12noon the next day I get a phone call telling me that the car is currently on a test drive and is ready for me to pick up, she then informs me that they have noticed my temp guage is working sporadically and that they could have that fixed for me for.....122 quid!! I said that seeing as it was a 17 pound part and not a big job I would leave it just now thanks.

Went up, in showroom for about half-three quarters of an hour as they did "paperwork" when I finally went out to my car there was 10 miles of petrol left in the tank, turned on the ignition let it idle for a second then noticed the engine management light was on! Go back in the showroom have a "discussion" with sales manager and mechanic who tell me it is my temp sensor thats causing it, I informed them that the car has been like this since I bought it and that I had a 2.0Se A4 that had exactly the same fault and neither car threw up a engine management light. After a bit of arguing I ended up just buying a sensor. Went back out to my car started it up and got about 10 feet before it conked out! Straight back in, got the mechanic who took it back to the workshop ,they hadnt plugged in the MAF sensor correctly! Guess what? No engine management light! To top it all off I have an almighty great oily hand print on the drivers side A pillar trim where the nuggets have been pushing the car in and out the workshop!

I captured all this in a letter to Audi CS, but to be honest I have just been brushed off, very poor show from them I think.

Dougie

shame on them.... you have been unlucky....

shouldnt audi just change oil pumps at service intervals????

does it happen to tdis???

Typical,You think you are leaving your car with the pro's but most of these tech's are cowboys. I think its really hard now to find trust in these people that talk a good job but putting it into motion is a different thing!!!!

It happened to me with my Climate control, They were telling me Im looking at a new Pump.... no mr "specialist", Maybe if you connected the wires the right way round you would have found it to be in working order fcuking muppet.

In regards to the Stain on your interior, Id demand them to pay for a full valet from a seperate company of your choice. Not the Chav that floats around the dealership splashing water on dirty cars then leathering it off. Thats why these cars are coming back with swirly paintwork aswell..:motz:

Keep us posted mate on your complaint,You never know!:icon_thumright:

I had this with my previous A4. Dreaded oil sludge etc. I had a long email and phone conversation with Audi UK. Their line was and remained
"There are no common issues with oil in Audi A4s in the United Kingdom that we are aware of."
The contact I had was James O'Flynn at Audi UK Customer support.
A total brush off exactly as you got. I ended up trading it in, because I knew I couldn't afford to replace an engine.
I got the 3.0V6, and dispite some misfire problems, I love it!
Good luck

Andrew

Hi Guys,
I've just been reading this thread and I'm horrified. As I drive a 1.9 TDI I hope this doesn't apply to me ..BUT I really think a list of owners with this problem should be started and sent to the BBC Watchdog programme as suggested earlier.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/consumer/tv_and_radio/watchdog/contact_index.shtml

If there is a common fault we owe it to audi to make them sort it out, for the good of the marque, and their reputation...even if they don't realise it...
