Engine temperature and warm up time

If it is the EGR thermostat, it's the same issue that BMW have. Weird.

I have this episode on my SEAT EXEO ST 2.0 TDI CAGA engine its been mentioned on the seat cupra forum... it seems to be the norm? my engine takes a while to warm up once warm it doesnt move from 90 when I put the heaters on max it does drop to say 70/75 drop the heaters to say 16.5 it stays at 90. strange but im on the understanding that its normal for these engines.

Hello, I have the same problem on my Audi A4 2010 2.0 TDI, started when it was getting colder outside. Did you find out what the problem was?

I have gone back to blanking off about 60% of the radiator. Works well.

Has this been resolved to your satisfaction? I have had numerous stock and tuned cars from many different manufacturers. I have NEVER seen this issue other than in an old mk2 RS2000 but that was done to me being a complete prat!!!!! IN any modern car that has no problem the engine temp should site almost bang on a steady 90 deg C once warm regardless of outside temp or whether driving up or down hill, heaters on or off etc. etc.

Modern cooling systems are extremely efficient and can hold a steady temp regardless of conditions.

Bloomin ridiculous state of affairs!

It will be the modern Derv engine effect, they are now so thermally efficient that you can steal the heat out of them in winter, not correct, I'm sure in time it will get designed out, but right now it seems that is the way of things, also, in colder climates Derv engine cars come with supplementary heaters.
Modern petrol engines are also being designed to speed up heating with separate cooling circuits for head, block, intercooler etc.

Edit:- I think that in both cases, it is due to progress - another word for change!

Hi everyone!
Had the same problem with Audi A6 2010 2.0 TDI CAHA.. Both thermostats replaced, water pump replaced during timing belt replacement and still the same problem...
And it it's the same now with A4 2010 2.0 TDI CAGC... Local Audi dealer explained the same story that it is "normal", and said, that there is electric or diesel supplementary heater for that...

Both thermostats were made by MAHLE for A6.. Just wondering, may be they were defective? Should I try original Audi stats?

Best regards!

I agree, even in very cold or very hot weather all my cars have maintained 90 degrees on the guage.

Actually on my old car I have had it go down lower slightly in snow conditions, when the car has been sitting in traffic for a long time (before it reached 90). So it is definitely possible, however given the current weather in the UK it should not be happening.

I have the same problem on my Audi A4 2.0 TDi CAGA.... I definitely don't think the fluctuations are normal. The temp should sit at 90 and stay there.
Motorway driving it drops to 60-70 degrees... in traffic it sits at the standard 90 degrees... it never overheats.. just a bit on the cold side usually.

Has anyone found a solution to this issue? It doesn't seem to be the simple stat dchange, as a lot of people have changed this and the problem still re-occurs. I have found another stat, the Verner stat.. picture below....

any ideas from anyone? Below the image of the verner stat... apparantely the A4 has several stats as part of the ysstem...

If audi diesel engines are anything like my old Mondeo st tdci engine they are very efficient, during winter months or cold weather my mondeo struggled to get up to 90° and hold it, nothing wrong with it, I would always get warm air into the cabin when required, then in summer months when weather warmer the car would easily hit temperature. If car runs ok I wouldn't worry.

I would agree with you, but some people after tinkering with their cooling systems (be it via replaced stat, or pipeworks) have managed to get it to sit at the 90 degrees. - this to me indicates an issue somewhere.

I'm not going to worry about it for now, as you say, but with the outside air getting cooler now, I wonder if I will be able to heat the interior cabin when needed? thanks for your reply

If its any help mine sits at 90c at all times once warmed up.

I changed two stats on the mondeo to repair this so called issue, engine oil coolant stat and the main water stat because the forums said these items would be causing the temperature problem......guess what.....made no difference at all. I kept the car for five years, the car ran perfectly with those so called issues !

If it's of any help, mine takes about 15 minutes to get to 90 degrees (September/October). Always have good heat through the inside heaters.
Once at 90 it may fall ever so slightly (as the thermostat opens) and then goes back to 90 again fairly quickly.

Any deviation from this scenario indicates a problem in one or more of the system(s), and it's not good for the engine either running below temperature.
Try replacing the radiator cap as that maybe reducing the pressure in the system.

Have to love the main stealers for the BSh+t they come out with just so that they don't have to pay up.
Small claims court is your friend.

Hello from another victim of car not steady at 90c,

(A4 2.0 TDI SE TECHNIK 2013 CVT TRANSMISSION) , only had the car four weeks full audi service history car did first 350 miles in full tank, second tank 400 miles quick google searched read one of the thread may be because of bad thermostat tried keeping an eye on gauge it would sit at 90c on motorway............... soon you get of motorway after doing 15 miles at least straight on 70-80MPH temperature gauge drops to just over 50 ........took it to local audi specialists got the water pump, cambelt replaced as it was due with full service took it for a run still the same steady on 90c on motorway most of the time get off the motorway do another mile on local road it will drop between 50-90.

Booked it again he SAID he thought below could be issue replaced all with no difference :

Main thermostat replaced
secondary inline thermostat replaced
electric regulator valve replaced

I will be taking it back in for him to look at it. could you please shed a light on what else to look into it, I have zero knowledge about cars and i just can not afford it anymore already spent £850 in total.

I will be very grateful.

TIA

At the moment my TDI sits around 70°c most of the time. Climate control works absolutely fine. As the ambient temperature is in single figures, I'm not going to worry that much about it.

i will hold on to it or i will just put a sticker on it with steady at 90c , any suggestions for poor fuel economy my 3 series always did 45mpg but a4 seems to stick around 35 or if i drive like grandad 40mpg, everything is full serviced on time baffles me new cars. thank a lot
