Hi all, just bought an S4 and love it so far (2 days) but curious about the engine sound. Can I upload a video from my phone on here for people to see&hear? Thank you

If you are meaning the rough/harsh mechanical noises, it really depends on which engine type you had previously.

I used to own a VW Passat 2.8V6 30V 4Motion and that version of the Audi engine was extremely quiet and smooth at idle - maybe a bit noisy at initial cold start due to chain tensioners taking a bit of time to get sorted out - but only now and again. This 2011 S4 bought at 12.5K miles and now only at 25K miles has always sounded rougher than that older engine.

I started a thread on my engine sounding like there was something light weight and tinny making noises - but I only noticed that after completing an oil change, I never ever lift the bonnet just to check what noises the engine makes at idle when cold or hot - in future I'll do that now and again and definitely just before carrying out an oil change so that I can compare before/after noises. Obviously after an oil change you do look closely under the bonnet and underneath to check that there are no oil leaks.

I left that car unused until I bought another oil filter, just in case I had left something, ie a cloth, in the oil filter base to soak up oil - and had forgotten it, when I removed the just fitted filter I found nothing, so just cleaned up the oil filter case, replaced the O-rings again, and started the engine - no tinny noises! So either the previous filter was duff, which I have no reason to believe (Mann so exactly the same as an Audi sourced one), or I went looking for problems that did not exist after initial start up after changing the oil. I'll leave updating the thread I started until some time/miles have passed.

You'll need to stick it on YouTube and post the link here. Should be able to upload it as unlisted so it won't be found in searches.

Phew..! I didn’t know if it was meant to be super smooth, it just sounds a bit ‘tappy / clicky” and was worried. I appreciate your feedback

Yeah my one sounds exactly the same as that. A lot quieter when the bonnet is shut. Obviously just a noisy engine

    Exactly the same as mine!

Generally speaking, all newer VW Group engines sound louder/rougher than VW Group engines from the past, its called progress!(?)

Good good! Touch wood then, all ok..! I asked on another forum too and others have also confirmed what you guys have said - I was just so worried! Also, the idle vibration whilst stationary - apparently that’s normal too? Otherwise though, I’m SO please with the car!

It's a 90 degree V6 so that's just about the worst vibrating engine possible.

I agree on the video - sounds normal. Don't forget it has chain driven quad camshafts driving 24 valves, so that's a lot of metal on metal action which sounds worst at idle.

That’s a good point, yes when I think about it like that - it is a lot of metal on metal action! Hopefull I can relax and continue to enjoy the beast. I really appreciate everyone’s comments - it’s saved a lot of worry!

Well the old 2.8V6 was a 30V and again 90 degree V, and it was a lot quieter than this 3.0TSI 24V, as I said "progress", maybe "why fit good sound proofing if it is not necessary, sod it just don't bother to make these engines quiet".

I'm guessing you've never driven a Ford Capri or Corsair fitted with a 2-litre V4.

My B5 S4 had the 2.7 version of the 30V 90 degree V6 and I can't agree that it was quieter.

I didn't know that Ford made V4 engines - my Capris had either the 4 in-line or the V6. I'm not sure of the point of a V4 as those cars had plenty of space in the engine bay. I'd still suggest that a 90 degree V6 vibrates more than a 90 degree V4.

Nothing vibrates more than a V4. It is probably the roughest, and most inherently unbalanced of any engine configuration. There are sound technical reasons for this; I've no idea what they are because I didn't take even O-level Physics (that's GCSE for post baby boomers :) ).

Was wondering about my rs4 B8 being very noisy on cold start (rattles) for about 10 seconds then smooth as anything, is this normal for the v8 ?
