EML on

Hi everyone.
I’ve got a 2002 S3 (8L)
I’ve got EML on. The code is 16396. Bank 1 (intake) Advance set point not reached. Over retarded.
am I right in saying it’s usually the cam timing being out or a possible blockage on the oil strainer I’m the sump?
Any advice is much appreciated.

Over retarded code normally means the VVT has not reached its advance point quickly enough... could be the sign of low oil pressure and/or worn VVT tensioner

It did just have the timing chain done, the timing belt was done a couple of years ago.

Hmmm yeah not that recent, if you’d said a couple days ago then that could have suggested that it’s been put on incorrectly skipping a tooth out, however…. It’s more like something that Tuffty has suggested above.

I’ll do an oil change and pop the sump off and see what the strainer is like, refill and post back. I’ll also double check the timing just to be in the safe side. Thanks guys. I’ll report back soon.
