Dynamic Front Indicators

Having specced Matrix Headlamps on my A4, I've been looking at YouTube clips of them.

Not sure if it's just me, but the "sweep speed" of the front indicators seems to be much faster than that of the rear ones. So much so, that they almost appear to be like the flashing effect of the "normal" LED front indicators.

Is this right, or are my eyes/brain/phone are playing up?

I have front and rear dynamics. I have no idea of the sweep speed as I’ve never timed them. I even fitted the third party wing mirror sweeping LEDs and they work in tandem with the fronts no problem.

If you watch these videos you can see that the front and rear indicators perform in a different manner:

Re the fronts... is this just coding or is a hardware change required?

I believe that it's a hardware change as only available with the Matrix LED headlights versus the normal LED headlights.

I think that is the case! I had Matrix lights on a 66B9 and was very disappointed. They certainly will not appear on my options list again. Love the rear dynamic indicators and extended interior lighting. Just went for the £100 interior lighting on the RS4.

The matrix headlamps on my car are a wonder, so bright, clear and to watch the individual lights dance around is amazing. I can't see why anyone would be disappointed with them unless they weren't being used with the auto beam..

True, to make the most of Matrix headlights you MUST use the auto main beam setting when totally dark. I've noticed that even in partially lit roads/streets the blue auto beam light comes on. Of course this doesn't that the headlights are on at 100% full/main beam, its just means that the car has determined that extra LEDS are req'd to sufficiently provide road illumination without blinding oncoming cars.

So it's sort if an enhanced high beam assist, bit the light is more focused?

No, it's much more clever than that - there are cameras in each head light that detect light sources ahead of the car - so could be the tail lights of a vehicle or the headlights of a vehicle coming towards you. Once it's detected the other light sources each headlight selectively dims/or turns off individual LEDs in each headlight so the other drivers are not blinded.

So last week I had the need to drive cross country on winding country roads - came up behind a slower moving vehicle. The Matrix headlights dimmed the LEDs that were illuminating the back of the car I was following and perhaps 300mm either side of it - so not blinding the other driver through their external mirrors. The headlights - lit the road up either side of the other car to maximum distance (as if I was driving on full-beam) and to the top of the trees either side of the road. For the other driver it must have been very weird.

The bit that's easy to miss with Matrix lights is that they are not on by default - you just have normal LED headlight lights with the light switch set to AUTO or on and have to remember to push the light stalk away from you each time you drive at night. At the very bottom of the dash there is a white headlamp icon with 'AUTO' below it to show they are 'activated'.

Like RGB' above when I first tried the headlamps at night I was a bit 'underwhemled' as they didn't appear to be appreciably better than the LED headlamps that the RSQ3 had (still very good) - then I discovered the AUTO bit.… The first time you head down the road with the lights in Auto mode you waiting for the irritated flashes of blinded drivers heading towards you and there's nothing - really quite an amazing capability and typically so Audi with another 'undersold' feature.

Something I really like is the almost theatrical way the matrix lights behave in 'auto' mode when one leaves an area with street lighting and head into the pitch dark. The lights appear to momentarily focus centrally together and then spread out left and right simultaneously as though curtains are being opened...really special (sucker for that kind of detail).

Third party wing mirror sweeping!? Hard to install? And where can I get it?

And @cosmicblue, couldn’t explain it better myself. Just love seeing it in action!

I did use the auto beam which I also use on current B9 RS4 and 8v S3. On the B9 with matrix the lights worked ‘ok’ on lighted main roads but on B roads and country lanes (most of my night driving) were completely ineffective hence my comments. The speed of adjustment was far too slow. Just my experiences in darkest South West .

Great reply Cosmic... but my views were made having used the AUTO. Great on wider roads I'm sure but most of my driving at night here in the west country is either on the M% or country lanes where they were pretty useless when oncoming vehicles were approaching. Sorry that was my experience.

The camera is in the windscreen module. Not the headlight.

Friend of mine fitted his Golf R with sweeping mirror indicators, bought from this selling.

    https://autoaux.aliexpress.com/stor...usgroup-N513569656.1.1e6169b1omdeUW&topMenu=y

Looked great, seemed good quality and was told it was quite simple to install.

Seller Kibowear has sweeping mirrors for all Audi's.

    May get some myself.

Perhaps the matrix auto settings have been ajusted by the front camera recall that was programmed into my car at the last service...

Just had a look at them and £50 isn't too bad.
Also found their video on it
@Evil Derboy did you say they work well with the front dynamic lights? All the videos I've seen are with standard indicators. Also are yours like individual LEDS or does it have like a frost front to spread the light kind of thing?

Apologies, you are absolutely correct - in the A4's case it is the camera in the interior mirror:

I’ve been checking the Auto dim on my RS4 with standard lights on the same bendy lanes where the matrix lights caused me much frustration and find that when oncoming traffic is seen they dim quite quickly. Matrix LED did not dim as quickly or maybe the sensor is different and did not detect oncoming vehicles quickly enough. ?? My opinion stands Matrix fine on bigger roads.
