Facelift DTUK Pedalbox+ review

I fitted the DTUK Pedalbox+ on Friday and wanted to share my opinion of the device.

I found that with the stock car that there was lag when pulling away and believe it or not found the car a bit gutless until 2k revs then it’s quick (dynamic is fine as it’s at 2k revs minimum at higher gears). It caught me out a few times when I was pulling out of junctions and I wanted a quicker response. I thought it might be due to turbo lag or tuning for emissions low down the rev range. Infernox mentioned the pedalbox to me on this forum and that it resolved the lag issue as it’s the way the accelerator pedal is setup on a lot of VAG cars. Reading various reviews for S3s confirmed this so I thought I bite the bullit and give it a shot on the RS3.

It’s now much more responsive and you can choose how much sensitivity you would like to match your driving style on the fly. It’s changed the car for me as I found the lag really annoying. I am also into motorbikes and having a laggy throttle can ruin a great bike as it’s your connection with it and I found the car a bit like that to some degree.

Im really impressed with this products build quality, ease of install (takes 10 minutes max) and simplicity of operation. It’s really changed the throttle response which is exactly what I wanted - highly recommended!

I find this very strange. No lag at all in dynamic so just drive around in dynamic if lag is a problem? The car is for mooching around in anything other than dynamic imho although how any one can suggest it slow in any gear astounds me!

Lol don’t get upset - I said lag not slow....

Even in dynamic it’s there just not as prominent as the car is higher in the rev range. Also I don’t want to always be hooning about in dynamic. The pedalbox gives a better response in all modes, more options and in MY opinion that’s a good thing but if it’s not for you then that’s fine.

I agree @SteviegRS pedal box+ plus is a noticeable improvement, even in Dynamic.
Always had them on vag cars.

The wife’s GTD was transformed by one.

I’ve bought a pedal box for the exact reason as stated by the OP.

The cars pedal is set up so that there is what feels like lag. The responsiveness is poor. I hope to fit it in the next few days.

Sad thing is that most tuners won’t adjust this pedal setting for some reason. Tried both APR and MRC and out of the two MRC was better in pedal feel.

Thanks for the review. Made me pull my finger out to fit mine ASAP.

Glad I could help. I've never used it myself personally but heard about it a lot when I was looking at what car to get. You get used to it after a while and if you keep it in S mode on the gearbox, you'll never feel it. Coming from only manual cars previously, I just switch between D and S mode depending on the traffic and speed limit, gives me something to do.

The issue isn’t lag as such. When we say lag we think turbo lag. But what we mean is responsiveness/pedal reaction. My old 3.2 R32 would wipe the floor with the RS3 in that regard.

The RS3 and my previous S3 has been tuned that way. 2.5l and 5 cylinders should be way better than it is but for some reason they tune the pedal action to require greater pedal angle before it goes.

Dynamic setting isn’t sufficient. Dynamic in Sport mode is getting closer to it, but the revs are kept too high for general driving.

I had MRC custom map the DSG. They adjusted my Sport setting so it didn’t hold the revs so high and for so long before changing up. Now I have a nice responsive D+ mode which I can even use on motorways on cruise.

My old Golf R was horrific with a laggy/unresponsive accelerator pedal. I remember getting into the RS3 and thinking it was positively hyperactive. However, I agree, it could still be better.

Well I finally got round to installing the pedal box. It is fantastic and exactly what I wanted to improve. The low down torque urgency and pedal response is perfect. The car responds to the pedal without any form of jerkyness, it simply complies with what you are trying to do. Once installed you don't notice it's there.

I set mine to City setting, and then adjusted it to maximum of the 3 bars adjustment. The Sport and Sport + settings were not good. They were not smooth and the influx of torque caused the gears to change up and down too often. Perhaps useful for dragging, but City setting is great.

I agree with with your findings 100%
It really does transform the throttle response from lazy to anywhere from subtle to on/off!
I have mine in sport and knocked back down 1 as it was like you say, too eager to drop down a gear.
Definitely worth it if you don't like standard pedal

I also have mine in sport most of the time and quite like it that responsive (I don’t find it jerky) - but it depends on the driving I’m doing. I use city if cruising and that’s the beauty of the pedalbox is that you can choose based in your driving style and situation.

Just be careful if running one at max settings.

The pedalbox I had on the PFL made the car literally shut down in the middle of an overtake

Luckily I pulled back in and pulled over.
Switched off then back on and it was ok.
Scanning the car revealed a throttle position sensor error.

Oh I just realised what you meant. So I can have it in Sport but then adjust it not only +1,2,3 but also -1,2,3.

I’ll try -1 in Sport tomorrow as that would be lovely I bet.

Well I tried the Sport setting again, but this time setting it to -1. The initial response is very good and a step in the right direction but it still felt like it raced through the gears too much for me. So I tried -2 and then -3 and so far the -3 has been really good indeed.

With Sport -3 it has even more torque low down, like City +3 but just a lot more. With the City setting it was nice tootling round but once I was at cruise motorway speed it was hardly noticeable. However, now with Sport -3, it is great all round and responds really well. It'snice when tootling around in D mode, and on the motorway the car will pull forward much more effortlessly and will not drop down a gear unless you boot it.

Which is to be expected wth anything when it’s turned up to maximum

My advice is to try all of the standard settings, and the minus settings too.

This is info we send out with the boxes now as too many people simply whack them up to maximum and wonder why they’ve seen an engine light...

The Box had been tested on different settings and had been running for months with no issues.....

However one day for no reason it caused the car to shut down.

It’s not as if it was simply ‘whacked’ on the car with no thought.

Wow! I remember Gerald Ratner killing his business with one crass statement - you must be a relative of his!

I certainly would NOT expect the car to completely shut down on a max setting. If this were the case, the manufacturer should allow for this and hold back on the settings parameters.

I was going to try one with the recent hype given by many, but was waiting for a question to be answered as to whether I should buy ordinary or plus. But immaterial now! You just lost a sale!

I once had a car cut out on an overtake which frightened the life out of me - I certainly do not want it again, so thanks for the warning!

Hal. Get one. Just put it on sport -3, or city +3.
You are getting you car mapped and updated hardware so it’ll cope fine in my opinion. The cut out T800 mentioned is the only issue I’ve seen mentioned online so it could have been a number of factors causing it.

Ratner? Ha ha I know how old you are now

It happened and was down to the pedal box on a high setting and the RS not liking it.....

Good to have balance to these posts instead of hearing just the up side.

The pedal box + is also on my FL RS and yes at moderate settings results in a great pedal

Also had one on the Golf R and Golf GTD which makes the GTD great in my opinion.

If the system is set to max setting then there is more chance or you having an issue. I’m sure this is mentioned in the troubleshooting guide with the pedalbox. Expected was the right word, but it’s something that could happen..

Turn your toaster up to max and you burn your toast, the problem with any form of adjustable tuning is that people quite often simply start at the top and Work down, rather than starting at the bottom and working up.

Please the biggest misconception is the phrase or question, “which is the best setting??”

To which we reply.. (this relates to the tuning box but explains a lot)

The sticker is on the module as 99% of men don't read instructions and simply turn the box onto maximum and then wonder why they have seen an engine light. This usually results in us being slated on social media hence why we've added the stickers asking customers to contact us before making any adjustments to the system :)
I can sit here and explain the correct procedure and if you then decide to ignore my advice and subsequently see an engine light or experience issues, it's gives me/us a little recourse.
No disrespect to yourself but I'm a bloke and I never read anything but we’re/im hoping that customers will see the stickers and contact us, so thank you if you have taken the time to send an email as you’ve joined a very “special club” - The “Im a guy and I’ve read some instructions Club”
The module itself needs power, so adjustments must be made with the ignition in the first position or with the engine running.
The LED lights on the module will FLASH 99% of the time - this means the box is in lock down mode and can’t be adjusted but the flashing lights indicate the Program and fine adjustment that has been selected. Once the box is unlocked by holding the plus and minus buttons down the LED lights will then go solid, this means you can adjust the system.
After several seconds of inactivity on the keypad the system will lock automatically. If in doubt at any time please read the instructions provided with the kit or get in touch.
Cant feel a difference with the box fitted?? - Then please check and make sure you’ve not switched the module to “off” If you have 3 LEDs “RED” “YELLOW and “GREEN” flashing under the P button, then the module is switched off.. Yes i know it sounds crazy, but this is known to of happened so please make sure you only have 1 LED light flashing under the P, either RED, YELLOW or GREEN on their own and this means that one of the 3 programmes has been selected :)
There are 3 files on the box and 99% of the time the end result is the same overall power, the difference is how the power is delivered. Our advice is to try all 3 programmes/files/maps on zero first and you should then feel subtle differences between the 3 files.
Using the + button adds a touch more power, so from zero we would then suggest moving to +1 and then again comparing the differences.
I haven't mentioned +2 and +3 as most files are optimised on the zero setting but due to the differences found in sensor tolerances some cars respond better on +1. Anything higher may result in an engine management light, but there again may not. It is purely down to sensor tolerances, and in some cases fuel quality and ambient air temps can effect things.
The minus settings - Well what can we say, for the the last 12 years ive/weve never used them but recently weve had a couple of customers who have contacted us and have found that -1 or even -2 have given them even better results then 0 or +1. As I’ve said this isnt something weve ever promoted but were now advising customers to try the -1 and -2 settings as it maybe some bizarre anomaly that cant be explained as surely - should mean less rather than more?? On that subject even -3 should and will give you more power than stock. Think of it as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 rather than -3,-2,-1 zero +1, +2, +3.
Whatever you do please ignore anything you may of read online regarding the "best setting", intact even if you have 2 identical cars in the household please treat each vehicle as a unique item and don't simply assume that the setting you're using in one car, is the best for the other :)
All we want is for customers to be able to enjoy our product, but to also realise that their car is as unique as them, and in essence some trial and error is required to set up the system to best suit your car, and more importantly your driving style.
If you do see an engine light, don't worry this is your engine that you're being "greedy" and if the system is turned down the light will either go out straight away, or after a certain number of full ecu power downs. (A “full ECU power down" means starting your vehicle, switching it off, locking it, walking away for around 20-30 minutes).
We're here to help virtually 24/7 so if you have any problems or further questions please don't hesitate to contact us, thats what we’re here for :) If you'd prefer to have a chat, then simply reply to this email and include your phone number and we’ll try and give you a call.
Thanks for emailing and hope you understand why it's a small yet important part of getting the best from your purchase
    Many thank for reading this

Thanks to a great review from SteviegRS and input from James Baby and T-800 I just bought a PedalBox+, as I too was not happy with the laggy pedal.
Also, thanks Andrew at DTUK for your assistance with the after-hours purchase and your informative post. FedEx delivery is Jan 10th.

    Glad to be of service........

I was merely pointing out that on a high setting (one I'd played around with over a couple of days and was happy with, that I did have an issue)
I'd say it's a fair point that anything past sport mode is too much for the pedal sensor / ECU.

I'd understand then rant above 'if' I'd just got one and 'whacked' it on with no understanding of setting it up etc.....

However I'd already ran one on a 8P RS3 happily for 18months previous plus running one on the GTD too with no issues.

Well, I confess, against all my cynicism, I bought a Pedalbox. Ordered from DTE and here in a couple of days. Quickly installed it this afternoon and went out for a run. And I now have to admit, I go along with the hype! Completely! I can only describe it as going back in time driving a finely tuned Cosworth with a bank of Weber 45s controlled by a cable - instant response!
Frightingly, I just calculated this evening I have been driving fly by wire since 1995 - just shows how quickly one becomes complacant with what is put before you!

I did buy it that afternoon.
Not had a chance to fit it yet.
Missus asked what it was - told her it was something for one of my sons :)

    Which leads me to asking....

Has anybody managed to 'hide' it from sight but still be useable?

In the sales pics it is stuck to the centre console.
I am figuring I will keep it in the one setting that I like but turn it off each time I get out so the missus is not affected.

Hide it yes, but usuable no! I carefully coiled the cable and sat it behind the front of the plastic console near the accelerator pedal.

This is no good though if you want to turn it off. However, just tell her that the pedal is a lot more sensitive now and do not be too heavy on the accelerator. Give her an open area and she will soon pick up the feel. I drive in D a lot and I quickly got used to the fact you hardly need push on the pedal.

If you have to turn it off, the no option but stick it somewhere visible - maybe on the side of the console at your knee. But imo, ugly.

    I've got the solution..

I'll tell her that I got it from Audi and it is a Rev Limiter, which can be turned on and off, to stop me speeding in normal driving.

I reckon she will fall for that.

Installed it, it is just left looks in the cup-holder - fine for me.

Techically, it was super easy to install... undo a plastic plug adapter. Put one end of the PedalBox lead on one end and the other on the, er, other.

Physically, it was a bit of a bitch and I almost cricked my neck :)
Put the seat fully back, sit with you back on the door sill and gracefully fall backwards into the footwell so you are looking up inside the footwell towards the top of the accelerator. At this point, it helps if you have midget arms. Careful getting out... that is where you will most likely get the injury.

Now, I have seen YouTube videos where one geezer said it made no difference.
Well, I put it in Sport +1 and the difference if MASSIVE. The car feels a LOT faster. It is as if you've move up to at least Stage 1 on an remap.
It accelerates much better of the line, through the gears and makes a real difference out of slower bends.

Love it!! Great spend of £200 .

Missus did spot it , of course. Was not happy. I told her it was only £100 quid too :)
She cited about not being covered by insurance so I will have to call them up and declare it. ********.

I tucked mine up out of the way near the headlight switch, if i need to adjust it i just pop the side panel off to the right of the switch (the one that faces the door panel when it's shut)

The Golf R is was easier as it had a little drawer on that side that you could pop the controller into.

I must try one. I just can't quite understand how it makes the car feel so much faster...sure, a more responsive throttle. But surely 100% throttle is 100% throttle if you foot is planted to the floor?!
