DTM themed avant

Hi All,

This content is mainly copied across from my build thread on Edition 38.

I purchased the car back in 2013 to serve as my daily driver while I was building my 20V mk1 golf.

10136219973_96c61f3d94_z.jpg

This successfully remained unmodified for a whole year and a half while I was busy with the mk1. It was only when the EGR valve, cooler and exhaust pressure sensor failed that I was 'forced' to do some initial mods. I wasnt keen to pay Audi's quote of £1400 to replace the parts so I ordered an EGR delete and decat from Darkside development. This ruled out having to fix/ replace the cooler and the pressure sensor. After fitting the new parts with the help of Olly (Olethalb) I went round to see Bobby Singh for a map who worked his magic and took it up to around 220/225bhp.

23293861789_7c95b8b030_z.jpg

Another 6 months later and I decided to sell the mk1 to free up some money for a house. Not being able to find anywhere suitable meant that that money was sat in my account and temptation got the better of me.

New wheels - before, standard

after, Genuine 19" Rotor Arms
23293846709_9cc1e7f9a0_z.jpg

When buying the car the condition of the paintwork didn't bother me too much as it was 'only a daily' and still looked semi presentable. After a few washes it was obvious that the front end had been repainted and all the arches has been tidied up, sadly not very well. The front bumper looked especially bad and the paint was flaking in a few places.

Instead of just getting a few bits repainted I opted to have the whole thing done. I dropped the car off to Ross (RW Paint) who also painted the mk1. I stripped the bumpers, mirrors and lights out and noticed the drivers wing had split along the arch and was starting to rust to I ordered a replacement. Ross quickly got the car sanded back and straightened out.

I then picked up a set of 5x Rotiform INDs (8.5J all round) with tyres for a cheeky £450. I offered them up but the rears just didn't look wide enough, even after spacing them 20mm.

23058076545_bfb93d1be4_z.jpg

Annoyingly I couldn't find 2x 10J rears so I had to buy a set of 4. Much prefer the concave on the 10s

23058072835_6de89beb73_z.jpg

I picked out the 4 best and Ross painted them Mazda lightning silver

Then next up was this little delivery from Only Charged Dubs thanks to Hodge.

Baz kindly agreed to sell me his DTM bumper so I took a trip up to Leicester to swap bumpers.

23638818945_cc3531750d_z.jpg

It certainly helps to make it look a little more aggressive. I have ordered a RS4 style center grill to match the lower grills.
While I was up in Leicester I dropped in to see Luke at Plush and picked these little beauties up

Always wanted a set!!

23270808659_dbda898cba_z.jpg

They were originally destined for a Lotus so I had to make up some frames to get them to fit.

The seatbelts attached to the stock seats so I had to include a mounting point on the frames.

Seat buckles swapped over from the stock seats

And fitted. The colour of the alcantara isnt too far off the grey on the rears. Would be nice to get them matching though.

I took some photos of my old mk4 here so tried to recreate the same shots (how sad)

I then had the INDs refinished

24112306783_25c3e986f4_c.jpg

I also picked up a new grill. Since getting the DTM bumper I wanted to swap out the slatted centre grill for an RS4/6 one to match the lower grills. Annoyingly the DTM grill is the same as the SE grill in size, so the RS4/6 isnt a straight fit and would be a custom job. Being lazy I opted to just buy an RS4 style grill.

After:
24712984436_1022c534f5_c.jpg

In attempt to continue to make the car look a little meaner I opted to ditch the reflectors for projectors. Not wanting to splash out for OEM xenons i bought a retrofit kit from retrofitlab.

A note to all. If you put your headlight in the oven to soften up the adhesive, dont forget about it!! lol. I popped outside and got distracted only to come back in 15 minutes later to one very melted headlight. £60 later I managed to find a replacement but lesson learned. I used a hairdryer to separate the other two.

Anyway, a few pics:

Other changes include swapping out the aluminium trim for carbon.
25075261709_28cc27ccaa_c.jpg

The carbon trim was removed from a friends old DTM which was being broken for parts. While I was there I also picked up the next piece to the puzzle which will be fun to finish and fit.I just need to find a second avant bumper then i can chop the two to make one.

Another job ticked off the list (for now)

Iv always had my V2 controller just sitting loose by the front ash tray. With the introduction of the carbon trim, I was unable to fit the carbon ash tray as its designed for double din headunit setups where the climate control unit sits lower. The easiest option was to knock up a quick mount to fill the gap and display the controller in a more presentable manner.

Cardboard template

MDF cut
25344635500_45bd1cc8b0_c.jpg

Controller cutout cut, MDF trimmed in black, controller mounted and reinstalled. Nice and simple for now. Once I get some free time Im going to look at making a 1 piece section using my old ali gearstick surround that will flow up to the climate control unit. This will then we carbon skinned to match the rest of the interior.

25547608931_b890a37f1d_c.jpg

25009767334_f75e6f46ac_c.jpg

Not much to report bar a couple of new items. I few months ago I purchased some side skirt plinths. I was after a set made by Relak which are carbon skinned, but they had a crazy lead time as they need X amount of pre orders before they make a batch. I therefore got some from the UK with the aim to get them carbon skinned. I have a few other bits I want to get skinned in the near future, so opted to paint the plinths black for now just to get them fitted:

(Sorry about the crap photos. Will get some better ones soon)

25185382783_17d2d36b48_c.jpg

Im actually really happy with them and think they follow the DTM lip nicely. Talking of DTM, I managed to secure a second stock avant rear bumper so I can make a start on the custom DTM rear bumper.

Next was to drop the car back with Ross so he could start the rear bumper

disc comparison - 312 vs 345mm. The discs arent all that much bigger, the calipers however..........

And wheels back on. Thankfully the 20mm spacers I already had fitted allow sufficient clearance, just.
27260401872_9a99dd32d3_c.jpg

The wheel colour was making the car look a little dull so I had them redone in a tinted chrome
26938094854_6c8e80344e_c.jpg

27475351591_994495363c_c.jpg

And sealed using Carbon Collective Platinum Wheel. I havent used this before so looking forward to seeing how it holds up!

And before Players Classic I popped down to Fast Road in Ashford to have my tips changed to straight exit
27544181122_2d1cc6259e_c.jpg

27365993780_024179b932_c.jpg

looks excellent chap, I like it a lot, rear bumper is brill I'd love to go that route aswell , maybe in time.
there is only one thing I don't like, and its not just on your car , its on all the cars that do it, I just don't like that tyre stretching thing, wheel look great but I find the stretch tend to spoil what is a 200% brill car .
anyway strecting aside , top marks chap and lookforward to seeing more, but please no more stretching...

cheers

lol thanks Rob. I appreciate the stretched tyres arent to everyones liking but I needed some stretch on the back in order to get the 10s to fit and sit properly when aired out.

That is one mean looking Avant. Where do you get the time? Great write up and really enjoyed reading the progress made.

Thanks Scott. I should probably have noted that I have owned the car for 3 years now. It did successfully remain unmodified for 2 years, then I got a little carried away lol

Great read! Looks mean !!
Quick question tho.. how did the house hunting go ?

Thanks Jimbo. Well, Iv made progress but still haven't purchased a place yet. Iv moved to the area Iv been looking in to get a feel for the place. 6 months in and so far so good!

What an absolutely gorgeous Avant that is!

And are those the GL450 discs you're using on the BBK and do they sit centrally in the callipers?

:blackrs4::hubbahubba: that avant is so beauty ! Nice one mate Love the play with DTM bumper ;) did you chop your brackets or did you buy DTM bumper holders ?

Love it buddy welcome to the site.

Every time I read your thread on ED38 it makes me want to do more and more to my own. Where did you get the side plinths from? I seen some on eBay from Germany but they are quite expensive.

I'm taking your advise on the front headlights, want to de-tango and paint the lights black, what paint did you use and did you use clear corner lenses or just took the orange out?

Thanks buddy. Im not sure what discs they are actually. I got two pairs with the kit (1x drilled and grooved and 1x solid). Aparently one set are Merc and the other are Audi. The discs seem to sit pretty centrally.

Thanks mate. I had the DTM holders but the mounfing points differed to the avant ones so we had to chop the holders to work around the DTM side vents.

Love it buddy welcome to the site.

Thanks Sean. The side plinths are these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SIDE-SKIR...992781?hash=item5665603acd:g:B-IAAOSwnH1WabKn They are fiber glass but im going to get mine carbon skinned to match the DTM lip.

The headlights came without the orange lenses thankfully. I just used some good old halfords satin black for the front sections.

Yeah that is what i done - chop around the vents - Been in Audi dealer and gave them DTM Audi reg number to be able to order the OEM set - they gave me S-line one :D anyway mine were with a few brokent teeth so replace them !

Glad this is here now!

Saves me going to ED38 just for this car.

As I have said on there - Love this Avant and the DTM additions.

This and AJ's are possibly my favourite avant's about currently. Prefer these to the RS4 styling.

Thanks James. Really easy actually. The only slightly fiddly part was removing the pipework round the back of the block to the cooler. Darkside Development offer a pretty good install guide: https://www.darksidedevelopments.co...hLDQ3NTc4NjQ0Mzg1NzAwNjc3MDU5MDI2MDM0NzU0OTc2

Rotiform INDs.. spot on!
All the work done by yourself? Very impressive if so.

That is stunning, areal credit to you mate love those wheels and as you say these cars really suit the deep concave, why you you putting back to standard after all the hard work ??

I have owned the car for three years now, longer than I have owned any of my previous cars, and its just time for a change. I dont need a car for a daily commute as I live a 5 minute walk into work. Iv always wanted a Porsche so now seems like a suitable time to start looking at them.

The reason for taking parts off is because parts and the car as standard will be easier to sell than the car as it currently stands.

If anyone is interested, the car is now for sale in a standard form bar the engine modifications and DTM front bumper. The custom rear bumper is also up for sale in classifieds HERE

Shame to see it being split for sale, but will prob be easier to sell as such.

It is a shame but i have owned the car for 3 years now and fancy a change. I have managed to sell the brakes, skirts and air suspension already. I didnt think anyone would want to pay the best part of 10k for the car as it was, so putting it back to standard seemed sensible.

I totally understand why you're partially breaking it, the market for such modified car is a niche one.
The last thing you want is to have it sat around for ages whilst you're itching to start on something new!

Not too bad really. The main thing to consider is taking it easy when separating the lens from the body, making sure the projectors are lined up, and that its nicely sealed when you put it back together.
