Hi all,

I recently bought my partner a 2.0tdi DSG A3, 2005 l, 130k miles

It has had an engine management light on since I got it, VCDS throws up a fault code of 28775 - No comms with gear selector unit.

A few days ago I replaced the whole gear selector unit in question (which wasn’t quite as difficult a job as I thought it might of been) the part was second hand from a breaker on ebay.

However, I STILL have exactly the same problem and code! Fuming

So I guess my question is, does the selector unit need any special coding on VCDS when being replaced?

Or may be the replacement unit I bought has exactly the same problem as the original one.

I really have no idea any more, I’ve spent hours trying to find a solution on the internet.

It doesn’t really bother me all that much, but the problem is it won’t pass an MOT with the engine management light on!

If any of you have any ideas or suggestions I’d much appreciate it

Thanks

you scanned with VCDS and got what codes? only 28775 or others
you may have done the right thing in the end BUT I would never purchase before investigating the fault code and making sure thats the only issue. You may have done this but money has been wasted on this forum changing stuff that is functioning perfectly well when its something else. In your case, I am wondering what other codes occurred as cangateway can aslo be a problem connecting to the TCU or the wiring to the unit itself

Thanks for the reply, the reason I went ahead and changed the whole selector unit is because to me it seemed the most likely culprit.. Plus I am fairly confident mechanically but not with checking/diagnosing electrical faults, I have VCDS which I only got very recently so very limit know how on how to use it etc.

Anyway, the car will (not very often) flash up the PRNDS on be cluster, it will allow the car to start, but the gears are locked and it doesn’t let you move the gear selector, but usually switching the car on and off again once or twice resolves it and works fine.

So the 28775 code is there permanently, but when the PRNDS flashes and locks out it also throws the codes

00511
00194
02413

Other issues I’m having with the car are (probably not related but to be thorough)

00888

Also an intermittent one for steering wheel airbag N95, something like upper limit exceeded but I can’t remember the code right now

I have found the microswitch previously, pressed it in and out about a hundred times, cleaned it up, and monitored on VCDS whilst moving into park and other positions and it was tallying up perfect.

Like I say, I’ve spent hours searching forums and google, I think I need more specifics now for example how do I check the cangateway operation or the TCU?

Thanks

Need to see diagnostics to see what's throwing the error.

Have you tried clearing the errors doing an ignition cycle rescanning?

What about the ignition switch on the end of the barrel?

I'm wondering if it's a wiring issue.

Yes tried that, they all clear the but the 28775 code always comes back after a short period of time, and then if the flashing PRNDS happens I also get the other codes with it (apart from the wiper switch one etc)

The ignition switch fault code is because it doesn’t let you release the key when the PRNDS flashes if that is what you mean?

I’m at a bit of a loss with it all, a few other situations I have read about usually get sorted by replacing the selector unit, but obviously I can’t rule out that my used one doesn’t have the same problem as my first one (if that’s even the issue)

I'd go with wiring & I'd consider swapping ignition switch out to be sure as these are known to have issues occasionally.

You could temporarily have some fun hot wiring the car and disconnecting the key barrel.

Just need 2 switches, and your key for the immobiliser.

just to verify it is the root cause

Excuse my ignorance, but can you explain the relevance of the ignition switch in relation to my issue? Thanks for the replies

You have VCDS ands you have Ross Tech fault codes and you have access to the ross tech fault codes on the interwebs. The fault codes reference control modules which are easy to find if you use the interwebs. You have a wiring issue as stated above. That wiring issue requires you investigate the referenced control modules to see if they are getting power and if so then they are likely not communicating and need to be replaced. The key barrel relies on a control module which is underneath the steering wheel hub. I have seen that control module lose its physical connection on a few cars which is why the above reference direction to check the ignition switch. I really don't think anyone here can fix it for you by typing in a response. Nigel is IMHO most trusted and competent and has given you excellent advice. I really think you need to either find the control modules and work through the issues stated on the ross tech site or just bring it to a local dealer and have it fixed

Please don’t be condescending, I am not asking any one to “fix it for me”. I am asking for advice from others who have more experience than I do on the electrical side.

I asked specifically what the relation was between the ignition switch and the issue I am having, which even though you made a very long reply you haven’t really explained either so can you explain to it me or do you not know either?

Not really sure what the point in your reply was other than to state the obvious as there was nothing useful or factual in there. I can only assume the ignition barrel shares the same control module as the gear selector or something along those lines?

Check out this PDF of the 02E DSG which explains a little on how the shiftier relates to the ignition lock.
http://www.evosoft.dk/diagrams/DSG_02E.pdf

Its from VW but that 02e DSG box is pretty much the same as in our Audis.
Pages 6-11 is what you probably want to read through.

I would check that control module under the steering column (J527) first and see if the harness is properly connected. Next would be to check for breaks in the wire runs from the harness on J527 to the selector. This is best done with a wiring diagram to identify which pins \ wire runs to focus on. Maybe someone that has access to ELSAWIN can help you out with the diagrams for your car.

I don't think he was meaning to be at all, so let's step out of any possible friction.

The ignition switch basically signals via key positions to the cars systems to turn on, it's a plastic mechanical switch with internal positions that have circuits integrated to signal via a wired connector to enable the car like the canbus, immo, gear unit, etc etc.

They are known to go faulty, given they're only about £40 I'd try one.

Hi, You managed to solve the problem with PRNDS Flashing, if so how did you manage, I have the same problem!

You need to check for the fault codes on the car. There are many faults that will cause the PRNDS to flash, Getting the car checked for fault codes will be a start. I suspect the OP had an issue with the wiring as he replaced the complete gearchange mechanism and it was still faulty.
