    Hi Guys,

I read not so long ago about and S4 B9 owner who has his gear in S mode & Dynamic ride constantly as he felt that this was the way that an S4 should be driven.

I can't seem to think that this could potentially damage the engine in the long run, i maybe wrong?

Even though it is tempting to drive in these modes as you would have a lot more fun and the car becomes something completely different, i was wondering what were your thoughts on this?

    Cheers

the only part of stress I can see would be when stationary and holding the brakes it would wear more because it brings up the revs as though you are riding the clutch almost.

I always take it out of gear no matter what mode i drive it in A12, especially if i know i will be stationary for a while but the Auto/Start Stop kicks in. Do you not think it would cause more damage driving in this mode when the engine is cold??

I would think the Auto stop/start is likely to do more long term damage.

You're not using it outside the parameters audi set so it will be fine, as for different driving modes you get no more or less power in any mode its just throttle response that is changed, obviously having the gearbox is S makes a difference but its still doing what audi designed it too

Now you have opened up a new can of worms Flowrider!! LOL I do agree with you 100% maybe we are wrong but stop/starting surely cannot be good for an engine!

Do you normally drive in S mode & Dynamic?

Thanks motty for the reply, tbh, the S4 is so much more fun is S mode, but what about using it from cold start (obviously not being heavy on the pedal)?

It's load that damages cold engines not so much the rpm, although I wouldn't take it high into the rev range until the oil gets some heat in it, even in S if you're light on the throttle it will upshift early, but seeming as you're not going to load the engine until its warm you may aswell just use D

Sorry but start stop does not damage engines, a debate of many forums and in here. Basically everything is designed not to cause any issues, from the battery, starter, alternator, oil, cooling systems, engine design to the turbo the risks are no more than an engine without the system.

As for driving in sport mode, what makes anyone think that altering the power, throttle and gear modes so they are still within the limits the engine and power train is designed to handle will cause problems? After all many owners increase the power and torque by ECU updates or tuning boxes without any issues.

Anyone who feels their S4 is being damaged by driving in this manner should put their car in a box and send it to me please ;-)

My thoughts on this is that it’s utter nonsense.

No, I normally drive in auto and change to dynamic when I want to make more rapid progress. I manually switch off the auto stop/start, in fact it's never turned on as I have it setup to remember the last setting it was in.

I usually drive it in Efficiency. The Dynamic mode is great fun, but when you just want to chill, there is no need to be in it.

Is there a list on default settings within each setting?

Chill in an S4? Nah, i don't want to do that S3! LOL Never drove it in efficiency to be honest, i normally drive in Individual mode with my own settings. I am not a high mileage person so when i do jump in the car, i want a bit of fun and, my view, the S mode and Dynamic, puts a smile on my face.

I wouldn’t even like to drive in that mode all the time in my 190ps oil burner never mind the S4. Seems silly if you ask me. Each to their own, their money
