Drilling out your factory A4 1.8t quattro airbox?

I believe I saw a post here recently in which someone mentioned they had drilled out their factory airbox. I think the comment was that they gained the same affects as installing a K&N induction kit?
Has anyone here done this? Is it fairly simple? What advantages does it give? Better air flow? Better sound?
If anyone has done this and has pics or can give simple instructions, I'd be stoked.
